Lol - this is shocking, you're spouting off about more things you don't know about. You do realize the Strib isn't my employer, right? I own my own company and am in social media.
Facts make it so.
The value of "dirty" stories? I'm guessing you mean more women coming out...
1. To make sure Teague isn't able to do this to another woman, ever. Or he won't be able to get away with it. Before Amelia's story, most thought it was just a drunken night, not a man that had a pattern of sexually harassing women.
2. So the victims can have their peace. If there are others, they have been holding this in...they probably feel shameful, like they did something wrong, and have this secret. This is a way of moving forward.
3. Because it's the right thing to do.
Hi Nadine.
I do realize you own your own business. I recall reading something when I first joined this site that indicated you were affiliated with the Star Tribune in some capacity, as an intern, stringer, or contributor. If I misunderstood or remember incorrectly, or if that affiliation has changed, I apologize for that mistake.
But, your reaction seems typical of a mindset that defends the institution because you belong, and our definition of “facts” seems to differ.
The perceived moral and civic responsibility of the media has changed in my lifetime. No longer are they champions of our cause, and watch-dogs for our best interests. It has become a scummy, for-profit-first industry. You and others have attacked me for asking questions. And I remain firm in my right to ask them.
What purpose is being served by “more women coming out”? According to you, that will ensure Teague “isn't able to do this to another woman, ever.” While it may be your opinion, it cannot be stated as fact. As far as preventing him from “getting away with it,” he already didn’t. And, your statement that “most” subscribed to some belief is also unsubstantiated.
It sounds like your belief is if it helps them heal, or move on, gain peace, or any number of positive things you or they or anyone can list, there is potential value in “coming out.” In today’s world there are plenty of avenues for that, as well as a whole industry of professionals to assist that process.
I also believe you’re saying the more stories like this we publish, read and hear about, the less likely he will ever do something like this again, so there’s value in us reading about and hearing as many dirty stories as possible. I disagree that permeating our society with filth improves our environment. I have to admit to being enticed into reading or viewing the crap. It didn’t make my life better. It didn’t do anything to prevent it from happening again.
Whomever appointed you as the decision-maker for “the right thing to do” was misguided.
Our lives are not made better by hearing as many awful things as we can. They are most definitely made worse. Should we all bury our heads? No. But, we ALL shouldn’t watch and listen to the filth. It doesn’t make things better for a victim. They’ve had their misfortune and there are plenty of things in place to help. I don’t subscribe to the supposed benefit of children hearing all the evil things so they won’t be victims. Amelia wasn’t a child. She almost certainly could have read plenty of stories from persons in similar predicaments. She apparently went to her employer’s HR dept. and it seems like the Star Tribune dropped the ball until an opportunity arose to capitalize.
Did she get paid for her story? If so, then my issue is with the system that profits from sharing her misfortune with the public. It’s not that she got paid, since in some way that could be viewed as some justice. But, it seems to me that it doesn’t accomplish all the things you claim.
While I can sympathize with her, it also appears Teague has admitted his mistake and has been punished with a major career impact. Many posters here got a taste of blood and want more. I just don’t subscribe to that mindset. Teague said he is seeking help. Perhaps forgiveness. As a Christian, I’m asked to forgive. Piling on with lots more “coming out” stories just feeds this country’s desire for filth.
I understand that these views aren’t popular on this site, where mostly anonymous posters spew daily garbage. I’m here to read about Gopher football, and there are plenty of regular posters here I appreciate greatly for their knowledge, insight and information.
