2015 Gophers at NFL Combine Update Thread (Williams, Cobb, Wilson)

Most of these other runningbacks look pretty good in the drills. Have to imagine that because Cobb isn't out there keeping pace, he's falling behind. Sad that a pulled quad may cost him millions of dollars.

He was a 4th rounder with a great day and a 5th - 6th rounder othewise. As long as his injury is just a tweaked quad, his draft slot will be based on his production for the last two years.

I don't know where your getting that from. He was a projected third rounder by most scouts and a 4th by some before the combine. An great combine could have put him in the second in fact John Norris and Russ Lande have him as a top 50 prospect even without the combine. I don't think it will hurt him not participating though. He will have the pro day anyways.

I'd have to disagree with you there. He was looking at probably the end of the 3rd. A good day could have moved him up near TJ Yeldon in the mid to early 3rd. But if you watched the combine, a lot of the RBs showed surprising pass catching ability, something Cobb has never established. So no, this very much effected his stock. Now he's probably getting passed by backs like Cameron Artis-Payne and Karlos Williams who looked good today.

Cobb was already established himself as a decent pass catcher. I did watch it and I doubt those guys pass him. Like I said before he will still have his pro day anyways but they would not pass him even without him.

Also plenty scouts and NFL teams saw him up close in practices at the senior bowl anyways.

Your assumption is a year old.

Yes that is what I meant. A 4.8 is worse than many offensive linemen. Clearly a result of the injury.

No it's not. 4.85 was the OL record set in 2007. It was broke last year. There were healthy FB's running high 4.7-4.8 today.

He was running good and hopefully he can run at pro day.

His stock will drop based on injuries no doubt. Hamstring and now looks like a quad.

Thats hardly a "history" of injuries. He has missed zero games due to injuries unlike a lot of other RBs. A tweaked quad or hammy is not too much to be worried about.

Recent history.

You're right. I was wrong about the linemen. I thought I remembered the fastest linemen being in the 4.7 range, but I was way off base. A 4.8 is like defensive end.

The fastest OL this year was 4.98. I think there has only been a few OL who have ever been at 4.8 or better.

That is okay but you may have to change your moniker as a result:rolleyes:.

@DCobb27: I love running the 40 so much I decided to tweak my quad just so I could run it again!! Haha thanks for the support im FINE.

RBs aren't valued like they were in the past. Cobb is in the 10-15 range for running backs this years draft on ESPN's board. Based on last years draft 10-15 were all 4th rounders. This year is deeper at running backs than last year, so maybe more go in the early rounds. Regardless, if Cobb is the 10th back taken, he is in the fourth round, if he is 15th, probably 5th round, hence my opinion that a great combine gets him into the 4th, otherwise 5th or 6th if some backs pass him.

He is 8th for Mike Mayock of NFL network, 5th for Rotoworld's John Norris, 9th and a projected third rounder on CBS and also a top 5 RB for Russ Lande.

4.8 on Wilson's first run. Not terrible given his weight.

Yes and he is much lower an many other boards. We will know who is right in a few weeks...so I'll stick with my assessment and say Cobb is a late fifth rounder or worse unless he runs a sub 4.6 at his pro day. If he does, then he may very well be a third rounder and top 7 back...otherwise...10-15th back taken depending on what a team is looking for in the later rounds.

For reference, there were 14 RB's taken in the first 4 rounds last year.

I think Wilson helped himself the most with his arm length measurements which placed him 4th out of 34 LBs at the combine. He has very favorable measurements compared to guys like TCU's Paul Dawson who is Mayock's #1 LB and the Big 12 DPOY and Miami's Denzel Perryman who is a projected late first rounder.

Wilson: 6-0, 245, 33.75 inch arms, 22 reps, 4.77 forty, 37 inch vertical, 119 inch broad jump
Perryman: 5-11, 236, 31, 7/8 inch arms, 27 reps, 4.78 forty, 32 inch vertical, 113 inch broad jump
Dawson: 6-0, 235, 31.5 inch arms, 21 reps, 4.93 forty, 28 inch vertical, 109 inch broad jump

I don't feel like posting these again but I just noticed that he has significantly better measurables than Chris Borland or Max Bullough from last year. Better 40, vertical, broad jump and longer arms with only being 3 and 4 pounds lighter than either of them.

He shrunk! I thought he was taller.

I don't think height matters as much as people think it does. Scouts and coaches like long arms for LBs to take on O-lineman and taller players usually have longer arms so people naturally associate height as an important trait. It can actually be a detriment as taller players have a higher center of gravity and thus poorer balance and leverage so ideally you have a short LB with long arms which is exactly what Wilson is. Same can be said about DE and OT. CB, WR and QB are the positions where height actually matters IMO.
