Your favorite (lesser known) Gopher moments

It's not a Gopher moment per se, but I was at the game in '94 where Ricky Byrdsong get the technical, and started walking around the crowd, sitting in a seat for a few minutes at a time, giving high fives to the fans, holding up signs, conducting the U pep band, etc.

It was literally the most bizarre thing I think I've ever seen at a basketball game.

I concur. The Ricky Byrdsong Meltdown was the oddest thing I have ever seen at a sporting event. It went on for a long time.

From Wall Street Journal Dec 15, 2010

As with any lengthy drought, this one has seen all kinds of collapses, catastrophes and absurdities along the way.

In 1993, Northwestern started 9-0. In the next game, the Wildcats had a one-point lead on Purdue with eight seconds left. But then future first-overall NBA pick Glenn Robinson hit a shot from slightly behind the backboard to win it. Thus began a nine-game losing streak for the Wildcats.

In the eighth game of the skid, coach Ricky Byrdsong appeared to lose it. During the Wildcats' game at Minnesota, he left the bench and walked up and down the Williams Arena stands. "They called it, 'The Walk on the Wild Side,' " said Dave Eanet, Northwestern's longtime radio announcer.

I thought it was the corner

I know, right? I was at the game in the band - maybe my view was obstructed by the hoop right in front of me. I tried to find it on youtube or some article but to no avail...

I also swear the Levitt play was reviewed and I also swear Evan Turner was still injured and didn't even play in the game.

In terms of "unbelievable" moments involving the Gophers/Barn, one of the first things I think of is the (lack of) conscience of Iowa's Chris Kingsbury. He did not hesitate to fire from anywhere inside the half-court line. I don't think Kingsbury ever differentiated between what was a good shot and what was a bad shot, time & score, etc. Have to give Kingsbury some credit, though, the dude had some serious range, and I'm talking Trent Tucker-type range.

That reminds me of one of my favorite Gophers. Ollie Shannon also had no conscience. Time does make things hazy but I swear at times he would bring the ball over the 10 second line, take maybe two dribbles, and let it fly. Bill Fitch I know was one of his coaches and Ollie would often find himself headed for the bench if he really displayed no conscience. He always seemed so carefree even with Fitch turning red bitching him out.

Also, from back then. Clyde Turner's shot from the corner. The ball would be way back; Clyde looked about 40; but, damn, he was accurate with that weird looking shot. He looked so casual shooting it too.

The Byrdsong game and wondering what in the hell he was doing when he first started and then feeling sorry for the guy.

My favorite coaches to watch against each other? Clem and Jud Heathcote. It almost was a contest as to who could look the most anguished.

Watching Jim Brewer and Richard Coffey rebound. I think I might have to add Trevor to those two after this year.

The "Play Hosea" chant.

Watching Dusty Rychart hustle.

Three of the most memorable games. The blow out of Indiana and watching Knight's reaction. A game against UCLA when they were a power and damn near beating them at The Barn. Sidney Wickes and Curtis Rowe were their stars. Larry Mikan was unbelievable that night. The first game after things went to hell after the Madison incident. Nobody gave them a chance but what was left of the team beat Ohio State in front of what I think might have been the loudest crowd ever.

Regarding the review: what happened was that Sanden's shot was signaled to be a three-pointer but the scorer only put 2 points on the board, so when Levett made his shot Cinci thought they had won by 1 until they added the extra point to the gophs sending it to OT. I also remember Sanden making it from the left wing, but that part is a bit more hazy.

Knowing the girl that back wacked by Courtney James with a phone book.

Having a class with Courtney James, although he never attended class and somehow managed to pass. He showed up the first and last day. Wasn't even there for the final.

Being a student-athlete at the U during the academic scandal. I had Jan Ganglehoff as one of my academic advisors. R.I.P. Poor woman went through hell.

Playing a pick game against Bobby Jackson, Eric Harris, Miles Tarver and Hosea in the Super Block. Bobby dunked over my buddy with his nuts on his head.

The welcome home celebration after we beat UCLA. The crowd was insane. The helicopters following the team from the airport to the Barn. The team thought that the 3,000 fans outside the Barn was the welcome home celebration but little did they know that was the crowd that couldn't get inside. The "BEAT KENTUCKY" chant was so loud and went on for so long, it was incredible.

Go Gophers!!

1.) The crowd completely intimidating Penn State's Crispin brothers, and forcing them into 3 turnovers in the last minute, assure a Gopher victory

2.) The "You need Okey" chant in the home game vs. Wisconsin over X-mas break in the '96-97 season.

3.) Clem getting tossed in the first half of a game at Bloomington, I think the fouls were 12-3 in IUs favor at the time.

Watching Mike Davis sit like this on his stool for the entire 2nd half

+1

I also remember a few years ago against SDSU when we (the students then) were chanting Air Ball at one of their guards. He finally hit a 3 late in the 2nd half and proceeded to face us and give us the "shush" finger to his mouth.

The year after the Vince Grier tournament team, we got into Izzo's head a little bit. He turned around and winked at us. It helped that we beat MSU that day.

Thanks - I knew there was a review after the Levitt shot. Since I was actually at the game I never knew what the explanation or the review was about, so I assumed it was about the Levitt shot since the review happened after he made it.

*It was in the 97-98 season Sam Jacobson threw up a three at the end of the shot clock against Michigan it was from the line where the coaches can't pass. I think he may have been fouled on the play as well, but missed the free throw. At the time it was the greatest shot I had ever seen.
*Going to the send-off before the team left for the final four. I was 8 and my mom brought me before school. I got to see Bobby Jackson it was sweet.
*The Trevor Winter dunk against SW Texas State in the first round of the tournament where he stole the ball and went the length of the court to dunk it. That might be my favorite play ever!!

Great thread to start - so many of these bring back amazing memories!

How could anyone forget Justin Lorang's claim to fame - remember when he spotted a contact on the court? I want to say it was against the Illini and it was Frank Williams' contact. I remember being amazes by his vision, to see it all the way from the bench.

I still say the entire student section having a picture of Brian Butch in the bra vs. WI was awesome - and the fact that his Dad asked for a copy was even better.

Oh, everyone dressed up in hunting gear for Bobby Knight was classic too.

Loved all the texting/cellphone signs for Kelvin Sampson...I need to stop, I could be at this all night. I have laughed and had way too many good times in The Barn!

pre-game

George Schauer leading the pre-game for Musselman is mine. I was in grade school and although in retrospect I'm not so sure about the whole thing at the time it was as big as the game, something I looked forward to--and I wasted a lot of time rooting for George to score more than 2 points too....

THIS is what happened. Caravan's post jogged my memory. I still don't think there was a video review, just a discussion at the scorer's table. The ref signaled a three, and OUR scoreboard operator put up 2. There was a lot of yelling from section 105. Thanks for the recall.

I know it was from the left wing, the corner in front of the bench would have been right in front of me.

Any Townsend Orr moment are some of my favorite "lesser known" Gopher moments.

Kevin Lynch behind the back to Willie Burton for a monster one-handed dunk.

Randy Breuer vs. Uwe Blab and Granville Waiters during the BT championship season in '82.
Roland Brooks jump shot.
Guarding Ray Gaffney at the Superblock courts.
Seeing Lewis Lloyd and Drake vs. Gophers in NIT in the early 80's.

First off: I agree with nooram with his opinion on Roland Brook's jump shot...

My favorite moment was seeing Mussleman's team do the "Sweet Georgia Brown" pre-game routine for the first time as a youngster.

2nd favorite: The fight with the Philippine National Team. Weird game for sure.

Sam was the player. If Neil Reed could have picked between another choke hold by Knight or being checked baseline to baseline by Bobby Jackson, choke hold would win in a landslide. Jackson was great that game.

1992 vs. Michigan at the Barn.

I think Michigan was ranked or considered a good team. We had lost a few games in a row.

The crowd was not much into it. On a little Gophers run a time out was called and the barn was rocking a bit. During the time out a tall terribly young Michigan player put his fingers in his ears. After that, the student section went wild and was loud till the end. We won.

Nobody else I was with noticed the kid, but this incident, for me, made me scream louder at all other games I attended.

An MSU student running onto the court during a timeout waving an MSU flag. Security guard grabs him around the arms and abdomen. The student keeps waving the flag with his fingers.

That, and NASTY CYMBAL MAN wearing a Santa hat.

1. Student section cheering "spin your hair" to Gene Keady.

2. Sam Jacobson driving up the middle for a monster slam against Iowa during a nationally televised game (If I recall correctly)

3. Anything having to do with Miles Tarver

Uwe Blab! Nice memory. I think I vaguely remember the students shouting eins, zwei, drei to him when he dribbled on the FT line.....

Upsetting Purdue in the barn back in 91 or 92(cant remember for sure)

Watching a gopher practice and being able to shoot some hoops in the barn in 1993

Life long gopherfan since(actually before that but that cemented it)

That'a a difficult but fun Q .... here goes:
Seeing Lou Hudson and Archie Clark on B&W TV back in the 60's when I was a kid ....
Listening to the Gopher game against Ohio State when the fight broke out .... It wasn't on TV, or was it?
Seeing Double T hit shots against Ohio State to take the BT title at the Barn ....
Watching Willie Burton fill it up ....
Bobby Jackson making a killer shot from the sideline to beat Mich at Mich ....
Watching on TV Sam and Bobby Jackson make shot after shot after shot against Clemson in the tourney ....
Getting a W at Wisc a couple years ago when Lawrence Westbrook went off ....

Hopefully after this year, there will be more to add to that list....

The Illinois game at the Barn in about 2001, when they were so highly ranked... that was a game I will never forget. We lost, somehow.

Terrance Simmons had a couple of dunks that were unbelievable. Actually, his senior year was memorable... we lost so many players to injury, but we kept fighting and scrapping. That was at the start of Monson's tenure, and I thought it spoke highly of his ability to motivate.

And Sam J's dunk at Iowa, which someone just mentioned... that was incredible.

Also regarding Sam, didn't he sustain a minor injury while playing video games?

I didn't read the whole thread yet, but a warm favorite memory was when we just crushed Bobby Knight and Indiana at the barn, something like 101-53. I can't seem to find it because of the scrubbing of all our records, but that definately was Bobby Knight's worst loss ever. It was about the best game I recall ever watching outside of the NCAA runs we made under Clem.

Happened to be at that game, if one could call it a game. It was over in the first 5 minutes as I recall. Crazy crowd. Bobby never got up on the floor after the 1st half..

In 1982 we had a game vs. Iowa that had to go three overtimes. It was great and we pulled it out with some clutch free throws.

Kevin McHale's last home game and when he was taken out, the entire crowd cheered "we want McHale" and Dutcher put him back in and the place went nuts.

Also I agree with some earlier posters that Mussleman's teams pre-game warm ups to Sweet Georgia Brown were something awesom.
