Wow, Tubby's agent has been in touch with South Carolina

Other schools (reportedly) are interested in Tubby. Tubby says he will listen. Has a familiar ring to it. The difference now is the U has a new president and (eventually) AD on board. This could be an interesting game of chicken.

Eric Kaler, the new University of Minnesota president, stopped the ongoing negotiations on a two-year extension for Gophers basketball coach Tubby Smith because he wants Joel Maturi's successor as athletic director to be involved in working on Smith's contract.
From a Sid column, is it incorrect (not saying it's not)? I'm of the opinion that Kaler knew Maturi would be out and personally decided to add Kill's contract after meeting and observing him on his own. Also, I think Tubby would have been offered an extension pre new AD if the team made the Tourny.

what's so funny? They have more talent on paper than Minnesota go look at the recruiting. I'm not saying they could make the ncaa tournament every year but every 3 years.. yeah.

I decided just to do a little research to compare the two schools, per rivals, just to see how they matched up. I did not include any seniors as they wouldn't be on the team next year and I did include the incoming recruiting class. Also, Shaq Rowland, Chip Armelin, Maverick Ahanmisi, Oto Osenieks and Andre Ingram were all not rated so I counted them as 0 stars. Also, South Carolina appears to only currently have 12 scholarship players for next year. Not sure if they plan to sign one more for 2012 or what! This is also assuming Trevor Mbakwe does not return next year. My highly accurate research shows the following results:

Tubby could win at South Carolina if he wanted to jump. South Carolina has more talent than Minnesota right now, go look at the rosters. South Carolina doesn't produce elite talent consistently but there's a lot of good players in the state and the SEC sucks pretty bad right now so it wouldn't be hard for a good coach to go in there and win 21-22 games and make the NCAA tournament. Horn obviously wasn't cut out for it but Fogler and Odom both had pretty good success there. They should be winning more than 10 games a year that's for sure.
Even if the SEC sucks pretty bad right now, which it isn't that bad, South Carolina will still be at best a middle of the pack to lower type team. They finished last in the conference this year and next year will be behind Kentucky, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, probably Missouri and Texas A&M, and maybe LSU, Ole Miss, and Mississippi St.

“@DarrenWolfson: Lots going on. @sportstalksc emailed to say they're reporting Tubby has called HS coaches in So. Car. to get a feel for the state's talent.”

Hmmmmm

Doogie tweets:

"Reminder: while it'd cost the "U" $2M to terminate Tubby before May 1 (that came up a lot during 6-12), he has no buyout. #Gophers"

Go Gophers!!

Tubby is a bit shady on this part. Not so much this year given the uncertainty. but he has made a point during his tenure to ensure that his people have been reaching out on the prominent openings. Make no bones about it: if he said, over the years, "Not interested", then we wouldn't have heard the stories that we did. Perhaps my biggest issue with Tubby; at times seems to be more interested in improving his coaching standing than focusing on the U.

Why would we sign a contract where there is no buy-out for another team to lure Tubby, but there is a buy-out if we want to get rid of him:

Go Gophers!!

That's why we kept LIL Joel on as a consultant for a pretty penny!!!. In my line of work, MIACturi would be fired on the spot, no questions asked. That explains a lot about Tubby's annual flirtations with various programs.

Well his new job isn't consulting the athletic department....

Bleed: Ricky Lefft vs. Mark Rotenberg is a blowout. I actually forgot there was no buyout until I looked through the contract again tonight. We talked so much when they struggling in Feb. what it would cost to let him go. Sort of forgot the other side -- that he could leave.

Interesting stuff, thanks. I imagine we were so giddy a few years back to get Tubby that we allowed ourselves to get into this one-sided contract.

Go Gophers!!

Well if he leaves - it looks like it could be an appealing job to come into.

Doogie, wasn't there a buyout on Tubby's end initially? I believe so. Still it would have made since that either both sides have one or neither for the duration.

Either way, they've been working on this extension since April 2010. If we had a competent AD and staff, it would be done and we wouldn't be talking about this. I wouldn't blame Tubby for leaving, but hopefully rational heads will prevail. Leaving a potential B1G contender for one of the worst jobs in the SEC isn't a great move. And neither are Tulsa or SMU.

Correct.

Here is the language straight from his contract:

a. If Coach leaves the University on or before April 30, 2008, Coach will pay the
University Three Million and No/00 Dollars ($3,000,000).

b. If Coach leaves the University on or between May 1,2008, and April 30, 2009,
Coach will pay the University Two Million and No/00 Dollars ($2,000,000).

C. If Coach leaves the University on or between May l, 2009 and either March 21, 2010, or the final game played by the Team that season, whichever occurs later, Coach will pay the University One Million and No/00 Dollars ($1,000,000).

d. If Coach leaves the University on or after May 1, 2010, Coach owes the University no termination fee.

So on paper, more talent in SC...Personally I dont think the MN job is that great but I do think it is probably better than SC, but could be a flip of the coin, who knows...

Nevermind. Frank has not officially taken the job.
