Two sources, both with basketball coaching connections, said Wednesday Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith is in the mix for the opening at USC. One of the sources said there has been contact between Smith’s agent, Ricky Lefft, and USC. Lefft is an assistant professor in USC’s Department of Sport and Entertainment Management.

Go Gophers!!

Of course he has, he hasn't signed his extension here yet. He's sending a message to the Athletic Department here. It is kind of odd/coincidental that his agent is a professor at the University of South Carolina though.

Go Gophers!!

If he wants to keep coaching, can you blame him? He's got no contract extension here and a lame duck boss. If nothing else, it's negotiation leverage.

An unbylined story on a blog probably isn't a source worth paying attention to.

I would imagine this isn't the first time his agent has has talks with South Carolina if he's a asst prof there.

Geez, when is the last time South Carolina had a good basketball team, around when Brian Winter played there? Circa 1971.

Very smart move by Tubby. With some fans and the usual suspects in the local media calling for his canning, the uncertain state of his contract, and the lack of a practice facility, he is exploring his options. As he should.

However, I think he realizes the future is bright with this group of kids and he must feel some responsibility and connection to them. I hope it all works out and think it will.

Can't see Tubby to South Carolina happening. For once, we actually have a very bright future. South Carolina was 10-21 overall and 2-14 in the SEC. Yikes.

@GophersNow

Tubby Smith said after the game that he expects to be the Gophers' coach next season. But he also added "if they want me" while chuckling.

He said the rumors don't help recruiting, and "it's good to be wanted but I know I'm wanted at Minnesota.

" When asked if he was a candidate for the Tulsa job, Smith said that he wasn't commenting on it, and that "I'm a candidate at Minnesota."

I'd be very, very surprised if Tubby isn't coaching at Minnesota next season. I'm not worried.

This is stupid and of course Tubby Haters are going to make a big deal about it.

Do you think if we publicly sacrificed several of the Tubby bashers on this board it would help our case? We can start with my ignore list.

agreed.

But then again Kentucky was surprised one day too. I hope we have a decent back-up plan. I'm not a big fan of Tubby by any means, but I still enjoy him as our coach and would like to see him finish his career here. Next year's team (assuming Rodney is here, of course) should be able to make the tourney and possibly win a game or more there. If Trevor is here too, look out.

I guess we have to accept this as an annual thing, like allergies.

Tubby could win at South Carolina if he wanted to jump. South Carolina has more talent than Minnesota right now, go look at the rosters. South Carolina doesn't produce elite talent consistently but there's a lot of good players in the state and the SEC sucks pretty bad right now so it wouldn't be hard for a good coach to go in there and win 21-22 games and make the NCAA tournament. Horn obviously wasn't cut out for it but Fogler and Odom both had pretty good success there. They should be winning more than 10 games a year that's for sure.

LOL - Seriously??

The more I look at their roster, the more ridiculous this statement seems. Really?

The actual state of South Carolina or the team itself? Because South Carolina is one of the most mediocre large conference programs in CBB history. Besides a four year run in the early 70s they've made the NCAA tournament only four times in the last 38 years.

Okay, do we want to replace Tubby with a spring signing or should we wait until next fall?

I think it makes sense for Tubby to look around a little bit. The guy doesn't have a contract extension, we've had back-to-back 6-12 seasons and a new AD is coming in. I wouldn't blame any coach in his situation to sniff around a little bit.

That said, Tubby will be here next season.

just another great piece of inside info one of these might even come true someday as even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while

Until Duke or even NC State come calling for Tubby and offer him $3 mil plus to move...there is no logical reason for Tubby to move on.

Until the U decides to build a practice facility...there is no reason to dump Tubby and search for a replacement since replacing Tubby without the necessary recruiting tools, especially after Mature et al lied to Tubby about getting him the practice facility 3 years ago...who worth while would really consider this job.

Hell, Ill just got denied...really, unless someone has a stroke, we are moving forward with this coach and this team...hopefully into a new practice facility in 2 years!

Pure speculation on my part but I'm thinking Kaler is not pleased what he has seen from Tubby since he got here which is one reason why he announced that no decision on an extension would be made until the new AD was hired. Think about it, Kaler increased the number of years to Kill (no BCS track record) before he even began but we are to believe Smith (National Champion) hasn't gotten the extension because a new AD isn't in place? Could it be possible that Kaler has sat and talked with Tubby and determined that his will to elevate the program just isn't there? If I had to guess this morning I'd say Kaler wants Tubby to walk to another program which prevents the U from paying another buyout and the publicity that comes with it.

He didn't announce no extensions until the AD is hired. He said no extensions for any coaches until their seasons are over.

Kill was extended before the decision was made that Maturi would step down. At that time Maturi was the AD with no plans to hire a new one. It was also not during the season, which Kaler has also said, that he won't negotiate/do extensions during a season.
