Wisconsin D-Coordinator Dave Aranda leaving for LSU

Next year we are winning the axe. Mark it down.

Weren't we suppose to mark it down this season? And last season and the season before that and.....

Hasn't the Walker budget cuts hit the Badgers football team yet? Maybe that is why they cannot afford to pay Aranda to stay.

He already abolished tenure according to my nephew who is a professor in Wisconsin.

Illinois (State of) is on the same pace as well.

Aranda is supposed to be making something like $1.5M at LSU. There were no Big Ten assistants making more than $891k in 2015. And that was Mike Locksley, interim HC at Maryland.

Until the Big Ten gets serious about paying their assistants this type of money they will continue to lose them to the SEC schools.

It's not like this will happen a lot.

LSU didn't so much steal him away from Wisconsin as they they took him off the HC market. So this is more of a problem for bottom-half FBS programs (in terms of resources) than it is a B1G problem.

Aranda was apparently leaving all along. A HC job appeared to be the likeliest destination. But there are a handful of programs willing to pay coordinators HC-type money.

Battle of the haves and have nots. Pretty soon, they'll be wondering why fan attendances drop even lower.

They'll keep raising ticket prices in spite of fat TV contracts.

Wow!

I may get ripped for this, but I wouldn't want to be a fan of a program that is willing to spend that much money on its assistant coaches & football program in general. Commitment to the program is one thing, but it's starting to get out of hand. I suppose that ship has probably sailed a long time ago already though & I either need to accept that it's a part of college football, or find something else to follow...

He will have better athletes. And he will have a home boy coaching the defensive line and one of the best recruiters in Coach O.

LSU can afford to pay so much to football coaches because they have fewer non-revenue sports. This is true of much of the SEC.

I am convinced they were also willing to pay a 300k premium to have an inside-man for their 2016 season-opener.

Seriously?? LSU doesn't need inside help to beat Wisconsin.

Just curious about this statement. I'm not saying u r wrong, I'd just like to know if u can point to some article that proves this because I would like to see how big the disparity is if what u r saying is true. It isn't important enough for me to do the leg work myself so I didn't look at all schools. I did however compare the athletic websites of Minnesota and Georgia. Obviously SEC schools are not gonna have hockey so toss that sport out the window. I see the same sports on both websites except Minnesota has rowing and wrestling which Georgia doesn't have, but Georgia has equestrian which Minnesota doesn't list. At least between these two schools there doesn't seem to be much difference overall.

LSU needed a miracle 4th quarter comeback in the first game of this series. At home. Wisconsin later beat Auburn, who crushed LSU.

That was the same UW team that eventually lost to OSU 59-0.

Yes, LSU will benefit immensely from having the DC that held LSU to 7 pts in the first half in "Death Valley".

Fournette is awesome. But this could easily be one one of LSUs more challenging games. Not sure what would cause anyone to think differently, besides emotion.

No Stave, no Clement, an o-line still developing, and major upheaval on the defensive side of the ball which may or may not be calmed down by game 1. I think they will miss Aranda a ton and they are unlikely to be better on offense.

They played in Houston, not at LSU.

It wasn't in Baton Rouge it was in Houston. It was in the South, so I get your point but it wasn't a 'home' game for LSU. Plus, it will be two completely different teams so there's zero reason to the 2014 matchup to make your point.

What are the college rules (if there indeed are any) about contacting coaches (assistant or otherwise) for job openings at other schools during the season? Given the relatively unexpected (and rapid) departure of Andersen from Wisconsin last year, the assistants were kind of left holding the bag. I don't know Aranda's personal situation as to whether or not he has kids in school, but I wonder if he just stayed put in Wisconsin for a year (no way Chryst was letting him go) for a year to let the dust settle before putting out feelers to see what else might be out there. Just spitballin' here.

Actually tumors were that LSU was interested in Aranda last year but he wanted a 3 year guarantee then

Thanks for the insight. I don't follow college football news outside the lines (except for the Gophers), so that does shed some light on the situation.

LSU was down 11 going into the 4th and took the lead with over 9 1/2 minutes left, not exactly a miracle.
Count me as one that's happy the Big Ten doesn't pay these kind of crazy salaries for assistants. I love beating the SEC as much as anyone, but I think they cross into insanity. If they want to let em, I think Barry will probably keep it rolling at Wisconsin like he always has.

I believe they get Clement back. I'm glad Aranda is gone but they should have a pretty good defense.

Yes, you're right. Changed his mind last month. Smart kid.

Lose Stave. Clement returns. The entire troubled offensive line returns -- so they have to get better. Looked solid v. USC. 6 of 7 starters return upfront on the D with good depth. Loaded at linebacker. Young undersized defensive line gets older and a bit stouter. May have some real problems with a power running game like LSU. Lose 3 starting defensive backs...but returning 3 or 4 who played a good amount in the past 2 years. Can't say they could be better till the new QB gets in real games.

The USC defense has been terrible all season. The coordinator was canned (and rumor is Clancy Pendergast will make his return).

I wouldn't get too cocky based on that sample. USC is a classic example that coaching matters. It matters a great deal. Unfocused and unorganized elite athletes have been a USC specialty for the last 6'or 7 years.

You might want to go back and look at the salaries of assistants in the Big Ten and where they rank in comparison to the SEC. Then take a look at the number of assistants that have left Big Ten schools for SEC schools in the last 5 years or so. It is a problem. I would like to know where you got the idea that Aranda was leaving for a HC job. He was rumored for multiple DC jobs.

Bigger picture: Why are coaches fleeing Madison like rats on a sinking ship? Does something stink, like a fish rots from the head?

Because they pay under market value for them

Their troubled line killed us. Aranda is a big loss, but PC is a really good offensive coach.
