Will Coyle do anything to help enhance home crowd advantage?

I think yesterday would be a hard sell attendance wise… no matter what they did.

First cold snap of the year and … that breeze was brutal.

Crowd was energetic!

A 9-1 Gophers would have no problem selling out early.
Iowa is easily the biggest home game of the year, and we're still in the West race.

Would like to think it should still be the same, but I suppose you're correct.

Some cold days in past, I think they have had some indoor pregame options at Mariucci or Pav.

At WI, IA, I have pregamed in their fieldhouses on cold days. Maryland we did something inside at their equivalent to McNamara.
You mean the every game indoor tailgate they offer adjacent to the stadium? Or are you just going to ignore that the stuff you want may already exist?

I had a blast. Group of 8 in front of us had 5 kids. Ages 8-13. Kids wouldn’t leave. Said leaving early means “you’re not a true fan” so we stuck it out with them. Didn’t want an 11 year old trash talking us.

Good you realize they do, have done, or tried those things you listed. Plenty to do before the game to be entertained, people just have to decide to take part. Did you sty to the end of the game?
Left after the Evans touchdown. Kid has a burst!

Should have stayed. Incompetence in moving traffic meant a 15 minute sit in traffic getting out of SkiUMah...University alienated, broke ties with MPLS cops that used to know how to move traffic better. Hire security guards now and they have overcomplicated the traffic flow by limiting lanes, turns.

Honestly it felt like the hard core fans of old at that you would find at games vs Northwestern 10 years ago.

But much more of them.

I think that’s a good thing.

But isn't the point that it shouldn't take a 9-1 Gopher team to have a better crowd? It isn't like we are 1-9. This team could still end up with 9 wins which is hardly a mediocre season or anything.

Our fans are what they are...there is about 30k people who care enough to go on a regular basis. Hopefully the cultivating a solid student section every year will add to that but I highly doubt it. Hockey has the same problem. (and it was a problem prior to the Big Ten no matter what people say...I was at the U when we won 2 National Titles and Mariucci was never full except against NoDak and maybe WI or a Minnesota school if they were good. When I had SRO season tickets one year we could pick any section that wasn't the students and find the needed 4-5 seats together anywhere in the arena)

The difference between now and say 20 years ago when I was at the U is that now it seems any school that isn't in the elite tier of schools is experiencing the same thing we do. The college game is just different now. And I will offer that adding a "Tournament" has done more to hurt attendance than it will ever do to help attendance. Add in that people can watch on great tvs at home because every game in every market can be found saving you a lot of cash on tickets and time dealing with the logistics of going to the stadium and yeah people are going to stay home.

There was a recent push by the U to hire off-duty Mpls cops to have extra patrols in Dinkytown, so maybe they are there?

Right.

Problem is that (too many) of those rabid students move away and/or don't settle (back) here and then become season ticket holders.

Our hardcore base (tailgating and all) is probably, at best, just replenishing those who are hanging it up with the new ones. I hope that is at least true

Below zero windchills next Saturday. But Iowa. What do you think it will look like?

Good post. A fan message board can’t always accept reality so I doubt many on this board will acknowledge you are right. I know we have some loyal fans and we have some great tailgaters and other schools have similar problems, etc., etc., but a relatively poor fan base has been a constant here since I attended the U in the mid 90s. We had more students in football uniforms than in the stands after halftime yesterday. It simply is what it is.
I agree with this but... the student section has been really, really good this year. Yesterday's game attendance was not good at all, and the students really didn't come out this time. But this was a 1-8 opponent (or something like that). A non-rival. In pretty cold weather. Students decided they had better things to do than freeze their cans off watching a game that we clearly had under control. Iowa crowd will be better for sure. The game means a bit more, it's a rival, and even in the cold weather, the place will be pretty full.

Fair point on the Students. They have been good this year and I would have picked a kegger over yesterday’s game when I was in college too. I stand by my post, but that wasn’t a great example.

No food inside the alumni center this year.

You think this game will be a sellout?
That was before I knew the cheapest tickets left were $75. I don't think any casual person is paying that to freeze to watch two unranked teams.

As the other poster said, they'll need to slash prices if they want it to be a sellout.

"Fans" are not all in the same category. There are the long-time, hard core fans. There are the more casual fans. And then there are the bandwagon jumpers, who show up if the team is winning or getting some "buzz" in the media.

When all of them show up for the same game you can get a sellout. If one or two of those groups don't show up, you get crowds like Saturday.

Yeah, I don't think there's any chance it sells out.

The '19 Penn State was a struggle to sellout. It finally sold out a couple days before the game.

They were playing a one-win team on an eight game losing streak. Again, it comes back to success. The football team has not shown to be able to get over the hump to win the division and go to the title game, a few times per decade. If NW can, Gophs certainly can. Say all you want about the "logistics", if you want to show up a little before gametime and then expect to park and get to the stadium, that's on you. Same for leaving. I met up with my bro at Malcohm Yards around 12:30, had a few beverages, walked the six/eight minutes to the stadium to tailgate around 1:15. Tailgated for about 45 minutes then went into the stadium. Caught the train back to MY about 10 minutes after the game, had a beverage or two, watched some highlights of other games, then caught the train to where we parked over by 280. Cold but fun saturday enjoying college football. It's just not that hard to enjoy.

Right but you care, you are a diehard. For you many of the factors that would keep others from going don't play in. The pluses outweigh any perceived or real minuses. It is apples and oranges. I say the same thing, but even my friends that like going to games can easily find excuses not to no matter how good or bad the team is because they just aren't that invested.

Look I would never expect the NW game to sell out because they don't travel and they have zero name cache even in their good years. Even if the Gophs were 9-1 I bet they would struggle to fill the place and there would be a thread on here 7 pages long blaming the U, the team, the fans, the weather or if Jupiter is aligned with Mars. We just don't have enough people who truly care. Minnesota college fans tend to barely dip their toe in unless the team is on a massive run or they are playing a name brand school or rival. Been that way forever and it likely isn't going to change

I feel like you glossed over my second, third, and fourth sentences. Gophs have everything they need from a facilities standpoint to surplant WI and IA in the division. They also went after, got, and paid for the HC the AD wanted. Gophers need to grow the core fanbase. In this town (seriously compete for other sports and entertainment $$ options), that means winning consistently, winning the big games, and winning your division and making the conference championship game a few times in a decade.

Be interesting to see if Coyle makes sure he does everything he can to help the team.

Market and hype the hell out of the game...create some buzz.

Get tickets sold...get Minnesota butts in seats. Offer unsold seats to season ticket holders at discount.

Do some on campus stuff at frats, dorms, the Unions, the Mall, etc to make sure students are engaged. Used to do bonfires on Friday nights. Get student section full.

Free hot cocoa for students who are in seats pre kickoff. Free schnapps all afternoon.

In past years, they did free hand warmers, free winter hats on cold days.

Gold out? In past, they have had free gold towels.

Fly-over? More fireworks? Light show? That get the place dark and cell phone lights thing.

A much better, lively and engaging end of third quarter mix. It used to be fun. It has gotten real stale.

Make sure they have a A game for in-game production...more rowdy music and stuff...less ads and sideline honoree ceremonies between possessions...

don't be afraid to turn the speakers up!

Make sure the gates are over staffed and security is efficient...get people in seats early.

Make sure Fleck, players, coaches mention how much a loud home crowd helps out in any interviews they do.

Get concessions over staffed so people are in seats, not concourse.

Get bookstore marketing cold weather gear.

Let drunk Iowa fans have sex in bathroom stalls so they aren't in seats.

Ideas?

Buy the Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves, and Wild and move them to Des Moines.

the fan interest thing really is a chicken and egg question.

I listen to Mackey and Judd's podcast (not every day, but maybe once or twice a week).

The other day, they got on a discussion about "should we have more Gopher content." and Mackey's response was "No," because their listeners are not interested in Gopher sports. He bases that on the feedback they get from their app and YouTube channel. But, Mackey also said that he hasn't watched a Gopher game "in weeks." so, big surprise, the host who isn't interested in Gopher Sports says people aren't interested in Gopher sports.
