Will Coach "Kill" the "Another Gopher First Down" cheer?

Here we go again...

It is one of the few things fans participate in at the game, but let's get rid of it. I am now going to an away game or two every year and so far I have seen first downs celebrated in the same, or nearly the same way. I'm not sure I will ever understand the MASSIVE amount of attention a small group of people are willing to pay to this "controversy."

GreatPlainsGopher has it right

The first down chant just has an artificial bush league ring to it. Makes the PA guy sound high schoolish. oops sorry. Shouldnt slam high schools.

Well whining about this makes you sound elementary schoolish. oops sorry. Shouldnt slam elementary schools.

Well this whole argument is beginning to sound like something from a special needs school. Oops sorry shouldn't slam Wisconsin.

+1. I got a kick out of this :) :)

We should ban all cheering. It is all pretty lame when you think about it. If you don't like the cheer don't do it. If you don't like the Victory Walk don't attend. It is that simple.

The first down cheer is good and should stay. It gets into the head of the opposing team when we rattle off a string of first down runs on a long drive. Granted, that hasn't happened much the last few years but it was most fun during the great running games from 2002-2005. I'm optimistic Coach Kill will revitalize our running game (we did see the start of that late this year) so we can make good use of it again.

I've been working out to make sure my arm is in good shape. Unfortunately all the 20+ runs within his offense will just make Goldy do more push ups, and we won't be able to do "our" cheer as much.

I'm getting mad thinking about it. GRRRR! *mad face*

The last thing I want is the Gophers to turn into the Vikings.

This maybe should be its own thread, but:

Along those lines (I'm not a big Vikings fan), why DO people choose the purple over the Gophs? They've accomplished exactly the same amount over the last 43 years...0 championships. At least the Gophs have a tradition and history prior to their ineptitude.

There was a time when NFL football was secondary to college football. In terms of total attendance, college football kicks the NFL's ass. It's TV that has really given the NFL the edge. Pretty much everyone has access to NFL games, even if they don't have cable or satellite. Sure, you can get college football on over the air TV, but you get what games the networks decide to put on. I remember when it was a rare treat to see a Gophers football game on TV. The NFL also spends a lot on promoting itself. This is easier when there are only 32 teams.

A large number of fans were not alive when the Gophers won championships. The Vikings give you hope every so often. 4 Super Bowls/ 3 NFC Championship games.

I HATE THAT "ANOTHER GOLDEN GOPHER FIRST DOWN" CRAP.........

NOW, THAT SAID.......FIRST DOWN MINNESOTA ON THE ILLINOIS 15 YARD LINE///////

HAS A NICE RING TO IT.........JULIE PEARLS

Nobody was alive when the Vikings won the Super Bowl.

He was referring to the 4 super bowls the vikings were in during the 70's. No they didn't win, but plenty of people were alive for them. All of the gophers national championships were between the 30's and 40's, then the rose bowl in '61.

The announcer should be gagged...bush league, even if other schools are doing it...

This above has my vote. The only other school in the region having a PA announcer double as a cheerleader is North Dakota State (which really detracts from an otherwise pretty-good game-day experience: a full indoor stadium that can get very loud). I think fans actually become quieter because they're taking cues from the loudspeakers and aren't spontaneous.

The other problem with the Gopher's announcer is the lame "rah!" he adds to the end of some cheers.

I love the Bank, am optimistic about Coach Kill...now just muzzle the PA guy and let the crowd get rowdy on its own. (I think the "who hates Iowa" cheer is a scream.)

New 1st down celebration

I think the band should play the Rouser after each 1st down.

Rouser after every first down

The Rouser after every 1st down would be great! I like to spell a lot when I'm drunk.

The other problem with the Gopher's announcer is the lame "rah!" he adds to the end of some cheers.

The problem isn't the "rah!" by the announcer at the end of the Rouser, the problem is that the "rah!" was dropped from the Rouser in the first place. When I was at the U the Rouser always ended with "Yay, rah-rah Gophers, rah!" Somewhere along the line the last "rah" was dropped. Out of curiosity, does anyone know when that happened?

I guess us old folks don't like change ;)

My advice, if you don't like the first down cheer, don't do it. And for goodness sakes, don't mess with Goldy's shtick. There have been some games where Goldy was the only entertainment. Let's hope we can get Goldy in really good shape doing lots and lots of push-ups in the foreseeable future.

This thread is missing something... oh yeah

*BUM BUM BADA BUM BADA BUMMM! ... da dadada dadada dadada dadada.....*

Ha, I might not be an NFL fan, but I'm not brain dead (actually those might be mutually exclusive now that I think about it). I know about the Vikings Super Bowl appearances. I just think it's funny how some people in this area rip the Gophers for being perennial disappointments when the Vikes have done nothing but disappoint.

And by the way, not to nitpick but the Gophs last national championship was 1960, not in the 30's and 40's.

Okay, to follow up, the Gophers PA announcer is Jamie Verbrugge and he's very good. He's the same guy that does Gopher hockey, which he tried to retire from a few years ago only to have fans basically plead to get him back. So....don't knock the guy doing the PA, you don't know that you'll get someone better.

Second, I like the PA announcer to add a little fire to the crowd. What about Bob Casey and "Kirbeeeeeeeeeeeeey Puckett". Would you say he was unprofessional for embellishing?

I like it because it pisses off Badger fans. A lot of schools have similar chants btw, Wisconsin's is "First and ten Wisconsin."

The whole Boiler Up thing with that silly horn is turrible.

Actually there is a lot about West Lafayette, Purdue in general, and the whole Purdue gameday experience to not be that excited about. Being close to the Chicago airports and spending one night in Chicago on that trip was the best part. Oh, and they have a great Wal-Mart in Lafayette.

I had a much better time in Bloomington and hope to get back there sometime for the great tailgating in the "grove" area south of the campus (nicest campus in the Big Ten) and a fun downtown just west of the campus gates. I am curious to see how Illinois stacks up, my last remaining B10 road trip other than OSU.
