If so, then this is greatest hire in Gopher history.

Nothing screams BCS-conference program like celebrating a first down.

Have you watched football before? It's all around the country and even in the pros.

The coach has better things to worry about than chants, uniform combinations, marching-band routes, etc.

+ 1

I'm surprised how many times I hear that while watching other games, and from all conferences.

Plenty - even attended Virginia Tech when that program was rescurrected (Go Hokies!), but having attended ACC, Big East, SEC, and Big 12 games, I've never see it as artifically created as at Gopher games. It is beyond cheesy.

Fair enough that the coach has other things to worry about, but this would take 5 minutes and be done.

Not going to lie, I am pretty young and my only experience in person at football games other than the U of M is Wisconsin (for the last few Gopher/Badger games down there) and the Vikings at the Metrodome. "First and Ten Wisconsin" and the Vikings Horn sounding are both as noticeable as the Gophers. Also, the student section gets into it when we are driving and get another first down (I agree that it's pretty lame sometimes when we just had a three yard run on 2nd and 2 from our own 30).

Thank god we hired a no-nonsense coach who will ignore this nonsense because to him it will likely be just that, nonsense.

The first down cheer is a bit of tradition that the fans actually participate in, so by all means let's get rid of it. There is only a miniscule percentage of people who want to get rid of it. You'll take it out of my cold, dead hands.

I know a lot of people who really get into the first down bit.

I hope he kills:

1) The Victory Walk - or at least renames it
2) The Rose Bowl turf
3) The "special forces" moniker
4) Kevin Cosgrove's contract
5) Any use of the words "pasadena", "chili", "tremendous", or "light years"

Ever been to a UVa game (I'm guessing yes?) they do it all the time and even play the mini-fight song after every first down. Perhaps that's the real reason you dislike it ;)

The announcer should be gagged...bush league, even if other schools are doing it...

While we're at it:

-No music that doesn't come from the band.
-No paint on the field that's not a yard line/marker.
-No freaking jumbo tron.
-No gags: Goldy on Harley, canons, etc.

I'm willing to compromise on one of the above (hint: it's the second).

Artificial enthusiasm from a PA announcer at a Division 1 football game is embarrassing and classless. It's his job to tell you who carried the ball, how far he went and who tackled him, using the same inflection no matter who has the ball. It's respectful and big league. Cheering should be a spontaneous reaction from the fans after first downs and good plays, not choreographed as if we're participating in a grade school play.
Also, I agree with Studwell55 that we don't need music that doesn't come from the band. I know they're trying to fill those long commercial breaks with something, but overly loud piped in music isn't the answer. It's as if they feel we need stimulation every second of the game.

If the first down cheer is "embarrassing" at a D-I school, then there must be a whole lot of embarrassed D-I schools because so many do it. From what I can gather, we shouldn't do what everyone else does AND we shouldn't do anything that no one else does. Stale and generic, that's the way to go, I guess. The first down cheer isn't going anywhere. Why throw out one of the few things that the fans actually participate in?

Thank you for your service in the Barbary Coast.

AND THAT IS ANOTHER GOLDEN GOPHER FIRST DOWN! (Please imagine that I'm standing extending my arm out in the correct direction, it really makes this post a lot better).

The fact that we're worried about such piddly minutiae says a lot about where this program has been.

If you think our first down cheer is cheesy, go to Madison. They simply copy what the announcer says. Talk about boring.

Youre right, Jump Around in Wisconsin and Enter Sandman in VA Tech are so boring that they should stop those too. Some current songs get the crowd really riled up, unlike some of the songs our band plays. Plus, you cant always hear the band depending on where you are sitting. Oh, and let's just knock the damn jumbrotron down while we're at it.

Anything that might be used to get the fans interested in the game should be done away with.

If we were winning every home game no one would complain about any of this.

I nominate this for dumbest thread full of whining and bitching since Sunday evening.

That is an interesting attempt at a slam.

ditch the key wagging thing while we're at it.

Here we go again...

It is one of the few things fans participate in at the game, but let's get rid of it. I am now going to an away game or two every year and so far I have seen first downs celebrated in the same, or nearly the same way. I'm not sure I will ever understand the MASSIVE amount of attention a small group of people are willing to pay to this "controversy."

Why don't the opponents of the first down cheer post a poll?
