I'm seeing a lot of people here posting about PJ fleck needing to be replaced or hoping he goes somewhere else. Do you guys remember what we were like before him? I get that he has been good, not great (sans the 1 year). Do you realize how little money we have to play with?

In his time here, here are three stats that hopefully makes sense to everyone. And yes, I wish we could take the next step to become a consistent top 20 team, but we are Minnesota and we are a liberal school that puts little into the football program

P.J. Fleck at Minnesota (2017–2025)

📅 Year-by-Year Record & Bowl Outcomes
- 2017: 5–7 (no bowl)
- 2018: 7–6 → Quick Lane Bowl win (vs. Georgia Tech)
- 2019: 11–2 → Outback Bowl win (vs. Auburn)
- 2020: 3–4 (COVID year, no bowl)
- 2021: 9–4 → Guaranteed Rate Bowl win (vs. West Virginia)
- 2022: 9–4 → Pinstripe Bowl win (vs. Syracuse)
- 2023: 6–7 → Quick Lane Bowl win (vs. Bowling Green)
- 2024: 8–5 → Duke’s Mayo Bowl win (vs. NC State)
- 2025: Season ongoing and we made a bowl game....Again.

If you would have told me this when I was in junior high, high school, or college or even a few years after college I would have told you this is never going to happen. We couldn't beat Nebraska. We couldn't beat Wisconsin. We were lucky to make a bowl game once every 4 or 5 years.

I am just as frustrated as everybody that we haven't become consistently great, but this is the best decade run we have had in my lifetime. I'm at the point now or it's just time to enjoy it. Row the boat. Ski U Mah. Row the boat! Go beat the f*** out of the badgers tomorrow.

I do not think Coach Fleck should be let go, but he isn’t the second coming of …say Bud Grant. I think he should feel just a little heat, as far as the records against Wi and NE, Ithink at this point, it’s more due to their downswings than the Gophers upswing.
I am just going to post again, our last 3 recruiting and portal classes are almost identical overall to Indiana, NIL money a non factor, that bothers me.

Interesting score for the 2024 Nebraska game, considering we didn’t play them last year.

I think PJ being conservative with respect to game planning, and a bit of a corny goofball in press is what gets a lot of people fucked up — like a week after week blue balling via WR screens and RUTMs leaves the guys on this forum yearning to blow the program up gambling 10 more years of eating shit for maybe being Indiana like.

It does seem like GH is a special hell hole where we would rather commit philosophical seppuku or at the very least a weekly humiliation ritual for likes [e.g. picking a very weak wisco to win tomorrow] because some haven’t gotten over the trauma of the metrodome era and don’t perceive themselves worthy of joy.

In general, I agree with your post.

Nebraska and Wisconsin suck now. Ya think PJ would be curb stomping the teams those schools rolled out in Mason’s era? You must not be watching the games the enjoyment factor is seriously lacking. I hope PJ turns it around tomorrow.

I don't want Fleck fired. I still think he can continue to build upon his successes here. I also absolutely do not want Coyle anywhere near hiring a replacement right now. Every other program at the University is in decline at the moment. He's got a lot of other things to worry about.

I really think if they (the admin) or PJ were to invest in better coordinators I think he might be able to start turning the corner but that’s my opinion. These guys just aren’t experienced enough.

PJ is the wrong guy for the job, if you want a higher ceiling for the program.
Convince me I’m wrong for wanting a higher ceiling.
If he left for another job, who would you want as interim HC?
I’ll wait...

I understand that this PJ Flack character is a good coach, but what about PJ Fleck?

Who do you think we could get? Kane Kiffen is not picking up our calls. Brian Kelly killed a kid and wouldn’t come coach here

lol idk if I'm misunderstanding your post or what. You're saying "who would you want as interim HC? I'll wait...." as if to imply it would be tough to get a decent candidate. Yet then you're saying you want a higher ceiling and PJ is the wrong guy for that??

No one disagrees that we should have a higher ceiling. People disagree with you on how we get there.

I like your aspirations of becoming a contender. I had belief in Brew when he came in and talked of it, and I truly believe he was being sincere. He just couldn’t get it done. I have my doubts that it can happen here given the current circumstances (poor recruiting location, lack of donor funds, lack of fan interest, lack of budget for better assistants, etc.) but who knows? Indiana was bad or middling for a long time and have been there the last couple of years.

In a scenario where PJ left for another coaching job or was fired, who on the current roster of coaches or program personnel do you feel confident in taking over head coaching duties on an interim basis, or permanently?

It does seem like GH is a special hell hole where we would rather commit philosophical seppuku or at the very least a weekly humiliation ritual for likes [e.g. picking a very weak wisco to win tomorrow] because some haven’t gotten over the trauma of the metrodome era and don’t perceive themselves worthy of joy.
This mentality transcends gopher football in the state of Minnesota. I don’t know what kind of traffic GH gets, but the above may be an interesting premise for a study if any of you lurkers might be a postgrad psychology dweeb in desperate need of research clout.

Set up a study where subjects assess the likely outcomes to various hypothetical scenarios. Have one group of participants self-identify as not giving a damn about sports. Have another group self-identify as being lifelong sports fans of Minnesota sports teams (gophers, wolves, vikings, wild, twins). My guess is that lifelong Minnesota sports fans have at least some degree of pessimism deeply ingrained in their psyche that carries over to life outside of sports.

There’s your study, and you’re welcome. Please be sure to credit goonin_golden_gophers for assistance in coming up with the idea.

I think I’m with the majority of people that are fine with P.J. because we fear the odds are the next coach would be worse. If he chose to leave on his own accord, I would be a little disappointed, but wouldn’t lose any sleep over it.

On the Gopher Gridiron podcast (highly recommended) I think Ryan and Derek Burns nailed the biggest issue with this team: a failed/bust recruiting class of offensive linemen from a few years ago. I think this has really hamstrung the team along with a disappointing portal class this year. Obviously this shortfall is on the coaching staff, but I don’t expect no glitches. It happens, hopefully not often. I want to see what this upcoming recruiting class can do.

Referencing an earlier post, we need one of us to win the PowerBall and become a sugar daddy for the team.

We're finishing up year nine, right? Look at the Big 10 conference and tell me what game would be a guaranteed win next year if we played all 17 teams. THERE ISN'T ONE AND WE'RE IN YEAR 9!😮‍💨

You win with players. I've never seen a head coach throw a game winning touchdown pass yet. 60 years since the Gophers were conference champions. Numerous coaches, but always lacking in surper star talent.

Once ferentz’s blood oath ends via retirement we will get their ass
Similar to the Badgers. Once Alvarez retired from his AD role that program fell off. Always felt he was still coaching those teams given how bad or average Bielima, Chryst, and Anderson were at their other coaching gigs.

anyone can win with the best talent. Many coaches fail with the best talent - look at the firings this year alone.

Good coaches can get the most out of the players they have and can get. If you look at Wisconsin during their heyday under Alverez, they never had the best talent. None of their recruited and raised QBs went to the NFL and lit it up, yet they managed to win a few B1G titles.

Ohio State was better than Michigan last year, but Michigan beat Ohio State. They're talking about it on Game Day right now. Day coached not to lose last year (A Fleck Special) and lost.

Fleck isn't going anywhere that he doesn't choose to pursue, so the constant fire Fleck or Fleck is the best is a waste of time.

ignore Fleck's ridiculous chart and his inane whining about the criticism the COACHING STAFF deserves for where we are talent wise right now. It is squarely on them. That said, for any program, bad seasons happen - sometimes there are reasons, sometimes it can be completely inexplicable. The issue isn't that we're having a bad season. It's how we've played this year in wins and losses.

You're right, players win games. HOWEVER, coaching staffs are responsible and compensated handsomely for preparing the team to play. You cannot have watched this team this season and not see the deficiencies in preparation.

This team has struggled against teams they should not have struggled with. We're giving up yards in the range of 2x-3x the average of some terrible offenses this year.

The defense that absolutely mauled Nebraska should not have given up 400+ yards to Purdue and Michigan State and 500+ to Northwestern. And yes, we won two of those games.

Nebraska was overrated in a major way, but they are still better than Michigan State, Purdue, and Northwestern.

Wacker's teams were severely lacking in B1G talent, but they showed up and played hard, from the opening kick-off until the end of the game.

I can't see a PJ Fleck team rising up and knocking off an undefeated Wisconsin like Wacker managed to pull off because of the coaching and game philosophy that is PJ's downfall this season. Not that they have missed on talent and don't have the cash to go buy a team ala Texas Tech, Oregon, Ohio State.

PJ's strongest ability as our head sloganeer is his culture. This team, for all the bluster in the preseason, lacks talent, but more importantly, heart—the heart to show up and play for 60 minutes regardless of the opponent on the other side of the ball.

We should win today, but if we don't, the lack of heart on this team and the heart Wisconsin has displayed beating two ranked teams with 1/3 of an offense is the first place to look.

You win with players. I've never seen a head coach throw a game winning touchdown pass yet. 60 years since the Gophers were conference champions. Numerous coaches, but always lacking in surper star talent.
Really? We’ve had all kinds of superstar players. Not sure what team you’ve been watching the last decades. Mo almost by himself for a couple of years covered up PJ‘s deficiencies.
