Why can't Pitino comment on new recruits?

He was asked several times during the press conference about the "Big Three" and declined to comment about any names in general. I don't get it. Go Gophers!!

NCAA violation. Football, basketball, etc.. Coach Kill has the same comment many times.

The can comment on the recruiting process in general, but not about specific recruits. Has nothing to do with "the big three".

The media knows this full well (or should). It's as if they are almost setting a trap.

NCAA violation to talk about specific recruits. No NCAA Coach is allowed to do it.

this.

I'm floored that people still ask these questions. What journalist doesn't know this???

They know. They're looking for a slip up.

Twin Cities Journalists that only concentrate on pro sports and think the U is annoying.

The idiots who comprise the Minneapolis-St. Paul sports media. Seriously, do we have ONE good columnist in town?

That's an absolute fact. Certainly the guys that asked those particular questions (Sansavere & I don't remember who the other one was) know about that rule. Clearly trying to coax Pitino into making a mistake by talking specifically about the Big 3.

Sid's probably the only one that doesn't know about it, or understand it.

She's not a columnist though. For beat writers, Lavelle, Joe C. and Phil Miller are all good. Chip Scoggins is a pretty good columnist, IMO.

Exactly my point, and the distinction I was trying to make. We've got pretty good beat writers. Hey, even Souhan was decent. But whenever our beat writers transition to becoming columnists, they become just historically abysmal at their jobs. I mean, seriously, the columnists in this town know nothing about sports, are lazy writers, and are about as funny as Carlos Mencia's non-stolen material.

I asked the question about the recruits because I did not know. Yes, our beloved sportswriters in the Minneapolis/St.Paul community should already know the answer to the question before they even asked. But they keep asking anyway. Kind of strange to me. Go Gophers!

I'm excited about recruiting... I'm sure Rich will get recruiting help also from the left overs from his father and Donovan. "Hi ESPN top 100 player, we don't have any more scholarships available but Minnesota does, so go there!"

Whether the Gophers get some or none of the Big Three is a major question around the country. Around here people are concerned about them and next year. Somebody HAD to ask that question because for a heck of a lot of people out there it was the major thing they wanted to know and many of those people had no idea why it couldn't be answered.

Getting Teague or Pittino to answer it was the right thing to do. Much less self-serving than saying "I know why you can't talk about recruits but can you tell the others?"

To clarify, a school can comment on a specific target.

What they may say is just very limited. (i.e., "hey are you recruiting Gopher Warrior?"... a school can say, "yes, we are".. but they can't say, "With those skills? Of course we are - that cat can shoot from 30 ft with ease".

Also, a school can publicize a prospective student-athlete once an NLI is signed by both parties (and remains valid & in effect).

Bingo, that is the key to the question.

Does this mean they can no longer comment on Alvin Ellis?

Teague could probably say that they released him from his NLI, but then can not comment about whether or not they're trying to re-recruit him.

I think it was Bob Sansevere of the Pioneer Press that asked Pitino about incoming recruits. My beloved Sid Hartman would never be that dumb to consider asking. Sid? Are you listening? Or reading these posts? Go Gophers!

You all know already, I'm sure, but I gotta mention that Sid went on this morning about how Teague shoulda hired Flip if he wanted a chance at the Big 3. I guess Tyus and Rashad and REID are all Sid's personal friends. Overheard in Sid's imagination (where most of his sources reside): Hey Sid, we're coming to the U if they hire Flip!

You mean Travis Reid? lol

Doogie stated on 1500 that Flip was actually never offered the job.
