Why can't Pitino comment on new recruits?

"Thash rite, you geniuses are going to regret firing my close, personal friend Tubby Smith"

Sid "I've haven't been relevant since the "50's" Hartman

That's an absolute fact. Certainly the guys that asked those particular questions (Sansavere & I don't remember who the other one was) know about that rule. Clearly trying to coax Pitino into making a mistake by talking specifically about the Big 3.

Sid's probably the only one that doesn't know about it, or understand it.

I think you are wrong about Sansavere. I have no doubt that he doesn't know the rule. I have never seen or heard a less knowledgeable columnist/commentator. I can't recall a single insightful thing he's ever said about anything. Most of them at least have one subject on which them can comment intelligently, but he does not.

Would explain his deep knowledge on Travis Reid.

Sansevere things Shawn Zobel is a REAL draft expert.

The guy is a lazy D-nozzle.
(Both guys I should say)

I could be wrong, but I don't think Sid ever asked Norwood or Pitino to comment specifically on the big 3. Today it was Mankato guy and somebody other non-frequenter of gopher basketball press conferences.

Well, if Doogie said it, then the opposite is likely true.

That's because Flip doesn't currently have a job as a coach, so Flip's agent had no reason to leak info to Doogie so he could run with it.

I also think it could have worked out several different ways where an offer was never formally made. . .

Teague: Do you have any interest in the Gopher job?
Flip: Possibly, under the right conditions.
Teague: What are those conditions?
Flip: (whatever Flip is looking for)
Teague: Could you tell me about the kind of staff you'd be interested in putting together
Flip: Well, I'd like ______, ________, and ________ if he's available.
Teague: I'm sorry Flip, I just think we want to go in the direction of someone with more ties to the college game, etc, etc, etc.

We obviously have no idea what happened, but I think it's perfectly possible that the potential staff was part of the hold up AND Flip was never offered. I also think there is a good chance that Teague had a young coach/relentless recruiter type in his head and thats where he was going. Flip also could have more interest in NBA positions.

Who knows? But it's entirely possible that Flip was never offered the job with Flip being in strong consideration for the job.

You're wrong. Nobody knows more about miniature horses than Bob Sansavere. That's what he does with his free time, he raises miniature show ponies.

There were multiple indirect references to recruiting in general, but I only found two that were asked about "the top three junior recruits" or "the special 2014 class"

First reference: Bob Sansevere, Pioneer Press
Second reference: Jason Gonzalez, Star Tribune

The Alvin Ellis question was asked by Andrew Kramer of Minnesota Daily.
