The issue here really is that nobody else has sniffed the field in any meaningful way (I guess Kramer has but ONLY in one aspect) for 3 years. Fleck has not given these guys a chance in blowouts to show anything. Really, nobody outside of who is on the practice field has any idea what we have with these other QB's.

Fleck and the staff thought that Morgan gave us the best chance to beat Iowa. Not a single thing about that, will change in two weeks.

That will still be what they think, and what will happen.

There is no "and staff" involved in this matter. Fleck alone will send out the QB and I no longer believe his decision is based on who gives the team the best chance to win. Fleck may be stubborn but he is not stupid.
 

We are not going to know how the backups are going to do unless they play.

Tanner Morgan has part of the blame. A bigger problem is the entire offensive scheme has become mediocre and unaggressively predictable.

While I agree with this, Tanner is at a place now where he is missing on a lot of the easy ones. If you run this vanilla of an offense, you simply cannot have a QB that doesn't hit the gimmes.

Tanner Morgan starting to have a very Dante Culpepper feel to him; Chris Carter and Randy Moss made DC look way, way WAY better than he ever was and made him a lot of money. I never wanted to believe Morgan's success was based so heavily on TJ6 and Bateman but holy shit, it's hard to see it any other way right now.

Doesn't matter who the QB is. If the coordinator is the same we aren't going to look any better at the position or as an offense. Sure we'll be able to run the ball on some teams, but we don't or can't take advantage of what defenses are doing because our O coordinator has it in his head that we can only throw to the sweet spot (wherever the F that is)when we're in rhythm.

I’m not sure how this isn’t incredibly clear by this point of the season, when the totality of evidence is reviewed. I was shocked how good the run game looked yesterday - but pass again was not. Tempo still maddenly slow/predictable. Tanner Morgan a shadow of his former self.

Make the call, PJ. We need a new perspective.

Of course. He had the best season of a Gopher QB in our lifetime.

On the topic of QB's Cole Kramer according to PJ had a "solid" camp and is growing each and every day. Clark is dealing with a shoulder injury. Athan Kaliakmanis is "getting a ton of reps right now" said PJ and Kaliakmanis is taking scout team reps.

In typical Fleck fashion, we don't/won't know the extent of the injury. It could have been something minor or it could have required surgery.
 



When will the discussion regarding having a qb with no experience set in? For 22 of course....
 

I'm ready for a change, although I think a lot of this is Sanford's fault. I voted for ZA. Doubt it'll happen though.

On a related note...

Tanner Morgan is the #1 boat-rower on the squad. He is Captain Fleck’s First Mate on any of the boats in the Gopher fleet…the USS HOWfer, the USS F.A.M.I.L.Y, THE USS RowtheboatskiumahgoGophers, and so on. IMO, I think Morgan will be following Fleck around as a coach wherever PJ goes. There is definitely a special bond between these two.

With that being said, It makes me wonder if Fleck feels at all terrible for what he has allowed his offensive coordinator to turn First Mate Morgan into. Out of loyalty, I don’t see Fleck ever pulling Morgan and I fear we will see things just get worse and worse. If Morgan decides to come back next year, imagine what another season with Sanford would do to this man’s soul.

So, I’m thinking if Sanford stays, Morgan opts to move on. If Morgan stays, Sanford is forced to move on.

It's probably already been discussed here, but curious if Kirk Ciarrocca left on decent terms with PJ, other than fact he went to Penn State. He's at West Virginia now, but I believe as an offensive analyst, not even OC.

I feel like that ship has sailed. He almost left for West Virginia prior to the 2019 season because he wanted to be closer to home. When he left for the Penn St job, Fleck didn't seem too thrilled about how it went down.

I think it's more likely that Kirk ends up as the OC at West Virginia next season or somewhere else on the east coast.
 

Would rather just hire Matt Simon, than bring KC back.

Can't prove anything, other than point to the Auburn bowl game, but I feel like Simon was an important part of game planning and obviously is capable (in a one-game sample size) of calling good plays.

No, they won't. Of course. They'll beat IU, and then it will all come down to the Wisc game.

If we shit the bed on offense in that game, then maybe some things get changed for the bowl game.


The real, actual discussion is what is going to happen this spring and for next fall.

He only had 183 pass yards and I typically don’t see a QB get credited with total yardage gained on offense. That being said, I doubt we see another QB starting this year unless Morgan gets injured.
 

The overall the trend appears to be switching out QB's at every whim. This does not do much for a QB's confidence or for continuity.

I think we all know that barring injury, Morgan is staring the rest of the games.
We also know that we aren't firing Sanford after a game against Iowa in which we produced more than sufficient offense to win the game. The opportunity for a special year died with the Illinois loss (if they weren't already dead after Bowling Green) but we still have more than a fair shot at a positive season. We all need to recognize that Fleck has created a program about which we've elevated our expectations, that's a good thing.

Having said that, Morgan has played like the average mid-major QB talent that we've always known him to be- he was never as good as the 2019 stats or a few Perdue games would trick you into believing. He was dreadful in the pre-season games in 2019- a few amazing bailouts by his very talented WR corp can't be forgotten.

And can we please stop it with the "you can't criticize these "kids", they try hard and are good students" crap. They are grown-ass adults. Morgan is a college grad and is engaged to be married. He's an adult. Adults who don't get the job done they are supposed to do, get criticized for it every day in every profession, college athletics isn't some special case exception to that.
 

9-4 with the Axe home and a decent bowl win, can still be special. Not 11-2 special, sure, but we haven't had a lot of special years lately.
 

Morgan had plenty of time to keep getting better or at least maintain.

he is rated 8th in the conference now, maybe lower from when i checked.

I think that PJ sticks with Morgan, but I would like to see whoever is projected as next years QB, get some playing time. Ideally we get a good lead in the first half, then let the number two QB, get game time for most of the second half.
