White pleads guilty to misdemeanors

That's good enough for me. Just stole some jeans, didn't assault anyone according to the court. Get this guy back on our team, we need him. If it's going to be more important to punish him for such a minor issue, shame on the U and we will have a great time in the NIT. Everyone was ripping on me for saying how bad those 2 losses were, but now people are seeing the light when Palm and Lunardi are calling tonight a "must-win" because of those 2 losses. Or else we are going to have to win 12 B10 games to just barely get in. GET ROYCE IN NOW

It's so easy to judge other human beings. The guys judging Royce probably have never made mistakes in their lives. You have no idea what his life has been like or what his problems might be now. Give him a chance. Oh, and by the way, if you're a Gopher hoops fan you'd better pray Tubby gives him a chance because this team can't shoot free throws and can't make threes right now.

Give me a break! Do you really think White hasn't been given a chance? At least be honest and admit you're concerned about losing a basketball player who would be a big help to our team; not some poor wayward soul who is being treated unfairly according to you.

It's just simply amazing to see how many people ignore the fact that if you're a member of a Gopher team, you are representing the University of Minnesota in a very public way. You do have extra obligations, but you also have extra privileges and are expected to follow set rules to keep those privileges.

Just the fact White isn't practicing after this amount of time, leads me to be in the camp believing there are all sorts of issues here. Tubby has dealt with all sorts of players and problems in his career. He has a great deal of integrity to go with his experience, and I get the feeling he's calling the shots on White. Since Tubby's also competitive as hell, I'm fine with how the team is being handled.

Hey XMan

I think it is sad that the team has had to put up with all of this. Royce let them down. Jury still out on Mbakwe.

You almost have to be a lawyer like Snowman (or a fake lawyer like California Gopher) to find your way around the basketball board these days.

Hey XMan, you forgot me. I passed my imaginary internet bar exam in that other mega-royce thread and am now also a fake attorney on the internet!

:) :) :)

You guys can be attorneys all you want...I am the important one...I am the Judge!

To be crystal clear, White entered guilty pleas to two offenses, specifically:
1. Disorderly conduct - misdemeanor crime - with a stay of imposition of sentence;
2. Theft - petty misdemeanor offense - more or less equivalent to a traffic violation/it is not a crime by legal definition.

As for all the comments about White's uncle, White's family, and White himself going elsewhere--maybe. I am often skeptical of newer posters with claims to inside info.

Congratulate yourself more please. The more you post the more it seems you want the Gophers to lose just so you can say you told us so.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat ?

Theft is not a crime ????

Are you a sock-puppet for CG ?

I am often skeptical of newer posters.

Petty Misdemeanor defined

Just a fact:

MINNESOTA STATUTES § 609.02, subd. 4a. Petty Misdemeanor.

“Petty misdemeanor” means a petty offense which is prohibited by statute
which does not constitute a crime and for which a sentence of a fine of
not more than $300 may be imposed.

The classification of the offense depends on a number of factors. For theft, a major factor is the value of the property. A relatively small value in this case made it possible for a petty misdemeanor classification. Not to make it too complicated, but the factor actually controlling the classification in White's case ended up being the actual sentence for the offense. Because he was fined $300 for the theft offense, the offense is legally classified as a petty misdemeanor.

Apology, Section 201? Your attack was completely unnecessary (not to mention, wrong).

Anyone else find it really funny that he can't go to the Mall of America?

All the accounts of the procedings refer to it as a misdemeanor, not a petty misdemeanor. You are conflating the fine amount with the ultimate charge RW pled guilty to. You may or may not be technically correct. I dont know because I only pretend to be an attorney on the internet.

Apology? Sure thing. If anyone was offended or suffered hurt feelings by my assertion that "theft" is a crime, I beg their forgiveness.

Um, in case you haven't noticed, Royce didn't do either of those things well in high school. Sorry folks, but Royce wouldn't suddenly fix the problems with this team. There are too many to even list at this point in time.

again

All accounts? Whatever.

How about ESPN (from the Associated Press):
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=4706508

Or, if you haven't figured out the press can be a bit unreliable in their reports of these matters, you could look up the case on the Minnesota court website:
http://pa.courts.state.mn.us/default.aspx

Yes, I have heard the media can suck.

the espn story quotes RW's attorney.
The judge fined White $300 on the petty misdemeanor theft charge, Tyler said
Excellent source.

Do you happen to have the case number?

You can look cases up by party name, too.

But the case number is 27-CR-09-53039.

I looked it up

Yup, the theft was petty, thus NOT a crime, and the disorderly was a misdemeanor ( a crime ).

You were correct and I have been wrong tonight and my whole life, ever since my family taught me that to steal was wrong and was in fact a CRIME. What a crappy family I had!

I am going to punish myself by finding a recording of tonights game and watch it over and over again until my eyes bleed.

Section201, I don't know your angle, but you are coming off like a crotchety old man on this whole issue..."GET OFF MY LAWN!" Just let it go my friend. We understand what side you are on, you don't need to let the sarcasm drip off your keyboard on every post.

Whether you like it or not, petty theft is not a "crime" as defined by the law. It was stupid of Royce no doubt, and he has and will face the consequences. But let's get real here; it's not like it was a major felony, assault, etc. Many collegiate players are reinstated for much worse things than being stupid and stealing a pair of jeans. It's the reality of the world we live in; welcome to NCAA Division 1 sports.

I'm going to stop writing before I sound too much like CaliforniaGopher.

Well you all heard it already, I would update you with new info from his uncle, but he said his sister has no other information than was in the article. However, in talking to him, he says that Royce has expressed that if he doesn't get to play here this year, he is going to pack up and go play somewhere else. Just an FYI.

That's the attitude that just won't seem to go away. And his uncle (Louis?) is the source of this info? Royce has bigger problems than stealing clothes and laptops. Those are the issues that need to be resolve prior to reinstatement. And it doesn't sound like his "support network" has gotten any better than it was prior to all this trouble.

I feel sorry for the kid because he seems to be paving the path of "cautionary tale" rather than "NBA lottery pick."

Perhaps cyclonebee has some great connections and inside info, but I'm skeptical. Let's not judge Royce's attitude on this kind of unreliable info. Stick with the stuff that we know. That's enough.

Are you a moron in real life or do you just play one on this board? Seriously, you have issues. The only fake is you.

I guess your family didn't teach you not to lie and defame others.

still lol

I guess your family didn't teach you not to lie and defame others.

Yes I admit I defamed Embud by referring to him as your sockpuppet. That is a pretty low slur, I admit. I sincerely apologize to him for that.

He was correct and I was wrong on the defiinition of a crime. He provided links to "real" evidence to support his argument.

A tip of the hat to him.

You on the other hand, ppphhhttttt.
