Obviously people can speculate on whatever but tossing out the idea of Payne transferring is just trying to worry people for no real reason at this point.

Thompson transferring makes sense because he is buried on the depth chart and seems unlikely to be a big part of the plans moving forward (though with Evans backing out it might clear a bit of a path for Thompson to stick it out if he really wants to).

Henley leaving makes sense because of the whole Evans situation.

Payne transferring makes no sense. He is a Minnesota kid logging big minutes for his hometown team. Until he gives some indication that he is planning to leave it seems foolish to try and create rumors about him leaving.

Cooper is another guy who's name gets tossed around in terms of transferring but it really doesn't make a ton of sense for him to leave either given that he has already used up his free transfer and has a big role on the team.

But in the current doom and gloom atmosphere around Gopher Basketball I am not surprised some are assuming the worst is going to happen.....tough to blame them the way things have gone so far.

Makes no sense??

You gave good reasons as to why he would not transfer, but there are plenty why he MAY.

Namely........winning and money. Not bad if you can get both. Also, Payne is the type of big that unless his fouling/conditioning/versatility improve hes gonna be the type that gets similar minutes with most teams. So why not go have the same role but win more and get paid??

Not saying hes gone, personally I dont think he leaves. But it makes no sense, to say it makes no sense

Henley only makes sense if the school that Evans is signing with also wants him. Otherwise, he has a great opportunity here and Ben has given him a lot of playing time and a pretty decent leash. When one compares the TT situation with Henley, it is obvious that Ben wants TT to find a different situation whereas he is certainly playing and working with Henley.

Agree and I hope Henley sticks around. He is really raw but there is some obvious talent there as well. If he learns to play under control a little better he could be a solid player.

I mean, you’re kind of speculating on TT, why can’t he speculate on Payne?
Fair point, but TT doesn’t play, Dad is loud on Twitter about it. People in Alex area seem to think it’s going to happen. Payne on the other hand loves it here from all reports. I was more hoping the poster who said it actually had some evidence for it.

Looking at the obvious state of gopher basketball, Payne will be on other teams radar. If we//you think he won't then we are delusional and not realistic.

Gophers need to keep Payne and I want them to, but he is an appealing piece to a puzzle for other teams. This whole topic is speculation. I just hope he stays and the Gophers can put a few more pieces around him to put a quality product on the floor.

Yeah if Payne leaves then we should just fold the program. His family is big on school and he wants to be local. I agree other teams wished they went after him harder, but there is more to it with the tampering. You have to get to the player through other avenues and the player has to have their people putting out feelers. Teams don’t just go to any random player and throw stuff out or it’d get reported.

Why would Cooper step down in competition? He hasn't been good, but he's one of the only guys on our team that has had moments of looking like a legit Big 10 player.
Because I've watched the gophers for multiple decades, and he's the worst starting point guard I've seen them trot out there.

And that's saying alot.

Wasn’t what I said at all
I meant as a player. Like why won't he get playing time next year? Which guards are ahead of him? Samuels is gone--I think. If he is not as good as Carrington--then Betts should leave. But to just assume he won't get PT based on what we currently have is odd. This team is bad and their worst position group is the guards. By a lot.

He isn’t a guard and isn’t likely to play before Battle, Garcia, or JOJ. Depending on health might not over Fox and Ihnen either. Not sure if some on the team have had conversations on who might leave but if nobody does he’s in a tough spot for playing time. Why is that difficult to understand? He redshirted for a reason. He isn’t ready.

People will leave because the program is a dumpster fire. Some kids will want a change of scene, especially when they are getting beat by 20 night in and night out. If they don’t believe in CBJ they will go.

Redshirted to lock him in.

Reclassified to lock him in. Redshirted because he wasn’t ready. Not sure if the redshirt was decided before the injuries or after but could certainly have been pulled if he was ready. Would have been an ideal situation with our lack of depth.

Henley / Evans friendship is a consistent theme here, going back to when Ben was recruiting Evans. Maybe Henley had a hand in swaying Evans to Minnesota.

But they were not from the same high school. They didn't grow up together. They played AAU together. One summer? Two? I don't know.

But after going through the long season with his Gopher teammates it might be reasonable to assume Henley now has closer friends among his teammates than his relationship with Evans.

Therefore, I don't put much stock in the idea that Henley is a lock to leave because of Evans. Henley got a lot of playing time and has started for bulk of the Big Ten season. I will not be shocked if he leaves but mildly surprised.

It was declared he was redshirting way back before the season started. Considering this is what would have been his senior year of high school the chances of him being able to help this year were going to be very very very minimal, especially early in the season.

Next season he will still just be the age of the typical true freshman. He should be more ready than most since he has had a year in the program but will still be very young so may not be in line to be much more than a bench guy next year.

On balance Coop has been our second or third best player. Definitions need to fit reality.
I’d say that’s true. Still does not mean he’s a good rotation player on a good big ten team.

I don’t see anyone leaving. Now that Evans is not coming even TT will be hanging on.
