Where was our Student Section??

If you would like to pay tuition for the right to get cheap student tickets, by all means go for it.

The students that aren't coddled by their mommy and daddy and aren't majoring in business are studying 40 hours a week, working 20 hours a week, and racking up student loans. Life as an old man is SO much harder isn't it?

Lol. You have no idea how good the student life is.

It has very little, if anything, to do with money. Most of the students don't care about the team because the team is bad and being at the football games is not considered a fashionable thing to do. It's not as if the students are watching the games in their dorms on TV to save money; they just don't care.

The team is bad? One win from a Bowl. You must be Badger fan....your posts make you sound like such a D-Bag.

You'd be a parody of yourself if you actually knew what that meant.

For a BCS team, yes, we are bad, and haven't been a good program in decades. You create a thread (probably the 4th or 5th thread you've made related to this topic) bitching and whining about a question that is obvious to anyone with the ability of sentient thought. Just because you don't like the answer doesn't make it any less true. And, you don't have to be a thoughtless lapdog to be a fan. You seem to like everything this program does because you can't tell the difference.

We've improved this year. We haven't improved nearly enough for the casual fan to even remotely give a damn.

I think student attendance percentage was roughly equivalent to team effort percentage. There was a lot of jogging on plays, a lot of arm tackles, and a lot of poor focus. Factoring into the students decision not to come probably had something to do with not wanting to come see us get blown out. The team getting blown out validates their decision. What would help would be a big upset, preferably to win one of the trophy's we haven't had in almost/over a decade. It would probably help get the students out if they could look back at this game and say "wow, last time I skipped one, the Gophs won the jug at home for the first time since 1977, I'm not making that mistake again".

Are you dumb or just stupid? No we are not "bad"....your posts are bad. I like what this program is doing because we are improving. I created this thread because I go to every game and I'm pissed we can't fill the lower bowl of a student section for an important trophy game. How do you even know what the "F" is fashionable Badger fan??

We may be improving, but we're still bad (if you would prefer the more neutral "not good" that's fine).

You're pissed, and that's fine. Be pissed. Who cares? Why do you need to create a thread asking a question that anyone with half a brain already knows the answer to? Was this just another of your "I'm a better fan than everyone else" threads? Because nobody cares about that either.

I worked at the U and talked to enough students about the football team to know that most of them never even give it half of a thought. But even if I hadn't, I could put two and two together and realize that the students are apathetic about the team when it isn't playing well, because history has proven that to be the case for as long as I've known the Gophers have existed.

You give enough of a *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# about the Gophers to go to a game in lousy weather against an opponent that most people didn't give us a chance against, and that we almost never beat. Great. Guess what? So do I. I was happy to be there, despite the lousy game by the Gophers. But I don't give a *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# if other people don't go, because I'm not so lame and petty to cry on the internet about what choices other people make in their lives.

And that's the difference, and the reason why you can't seem to fathom that somebody can support the Gophers without being a mindless mouthbreather it.

Oh....being a tough guy and not saying anything positive about the Gophers must be a "fashionable" thing to do in your eyes. I give a #%!$ that we can't fill our student section or our stadium with fans that support our team...so deal with it!!!

I can't believe you guys are arguing about this. There is no one problem. We are not the only school that has this problem. There is not one magic solution, although a winning team will make it more of a popular thing to do. Relax and enjoy your close-to-bowl bound Gopher football team.

Have to go with Prof on this one. You can be upset they don't sellout these games but to start talking like people have a duty to attend even if the product on the field is mediocre to poor is insane. The idea of "punishing" the students by giving away their allotment of tickets is laughable for a number of reasons, including 1) do you think students who aren't going to games give a *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# if you give away their ticket and 2) even if you give them away for free, do you think that is going to guarantee people will attend? Even if the ticket is free, there is still a required time and effort investment that most people who don't care enough to buy a ticket will expend to watch this team on a cold day.

My suggestion is to stop freaking out about the empty seats and enjoy the game. The only thing that will fill them is a winning team. I went to the game, enjoyed myself, and was encouraged by the gophers effort

I can't speak for others, but my comments have been more about those who have purchased tickets already. Going by the announced attendance, over 48,000 tickets were sold. I know the team isn't very good, but it's not like that was unexpected.

I would care about this if I thought these people were keeping tickets away from others who would have bought tickets and attended. I highly doubt this is the case. If the people you are describing knew the team was going to be bad, bought tickets, and planned not attend if the team was bad they are idiots because they basically threw their money away. I think the bigger concern is these people don't buy tickets next year and the bank is even emptier (unless their is a waiting list for tickets I am unaware of)

The only reason I care about it is because a full stadium means more of a home field advantage.

To quote a well known football coach, "It is what it is".

I don't think it is worth arguing about. Some of them are more into social media/screens, sleeping in... Let's just enjoy the games (watching them and talking about it) with the people who are interested. Complaining about the ones that "don't get it" won't make them want to join. My son is 14 and I have to remember this every day (I can't force him to like something he doesn't).

You all really know the answer and it isn't "Just Win." I've been following Gopher Hole for many years and those who are thoughtful enough to seek a long-term solution know that it is to make Gopher Football be An Event, one that one attends whether you win or lose. Agreed, some low level amount of initial winning may be required to get the event in place, but depending on winning means attendance will fluctuate wildly.

What Minnesota needs - and I have no idea if you can get it - is for the Athletic Department AND THE UNIVERSITY - to admit that football is important to the University image and financial viability. Things changed at UW when Shalala convince at least some academics that football could bring in non-football $. Whether you can prove this absolutely or only on a trend basis is something I don't know.

If you get University buy-in, then changes to tailgating, seating, parking, etc. become open for discussion. Minnesota has many advantages (it it my favorite away game), but the University needs to take steps to acknowledge that sports are important, but not dominating.

I feel your pain. :)

You sometimes have to believe it before you see it to make change happen. Our crappy fans in Minnesota are just the opposite. They have to see it to believe it. Make the student section smaller. Get more fans in the stadium, they don't have to be students. Maybe alumni should get a discount?

You comment as if they are filling the stadium up and only the student section is affecting the lower attendance. Adding extra seats for the general public will make no difference if they don't fill up the bowl as it already is.

My favorite thing about GH is watching certain posters coming off the top rope:

My impression is that the upper level student section is the area that is empty, am I mistaken? Sell those tickets to alumni from the last 5 years for a discount. Fill it anyway you can.

It is empty, but so are the upper portions of all corners of the stadium which means there is not the ticket demand to sell the area in the student section anyway. Plus, young alumni already can get discounted season tickets so that would make no difference.

Can we just make an "All things student section" thread so we don't have to hear this tired argument in a new thread every week? Get the other 41,000 seats filled with Gopher fans (fans that don't sell their ticket to the opposing team). Then complain about the students. It's just as much your team as it is theirs.

The Badger fans actually have a legitimate argument. The general public is doing their part. The students are sleeping in. Gopher fans have no real argument to stand on besides, "They live such simple lives. They should go to the football game, really, they should. Us old people are too busy to go to silly football games on our days off. My old skin can't handle the cold weather like those youngins."

Fine, i get it. Our fans in Minnesota suck. They want us to win before they show up. Ridiculous. If the game is in hand, why even spend the money? Who cares about that type of fan. The reason I suggested alumni is because I want people who care about being on campus and having fun no matter the outcome.

You shot down my idea, do you have one?

The answer is 7 posts up from yours:

I'm currently a student at UMD and I wish I could go to every Gopher football game. It is such a huge difference from the Division 2 football games up here, and just being in the atmosphere with the band and everything makes it fun to go to. I don't understand why we can't fill the stadium up with cheap student tickets. Sadly, I've been to 3 Gopher games this year to only one at UMD...

Maybe I missed witin the thread, but a great tradition in Minnesota is deer hunting. Yesterday being the opener kept many away.

The University can say that Football is a priority, but when so many within the community don't care (such as professors and admin.) it sends a message to the students. At other competing schools it is expected you're there on Saturdays win or lose. It is about identity, tradition, and legacy. There is a feeling that we're better than identifying ourselves with a team that doesn't win. ( ask the students)
This is cultural and makes it difficult for recruiting athletes, coaches, and new fans.

I noticed quite a few stadiums not full after the gophs yesterday. Most surprising was Michigan
State. Least surprising was 20,000 (at the most) watching a favored Indiana beat Iowa.
