What the Gophers student section thinks of Bo Ryan

First off, I'm more than flattered in your compliments as to my leadership skills! Alas, I can't take much credit for it...We had a great leadership GROUP that combined our skills to do some great things, including GopherLady.

I didn't, but you did, so as long as we're on the subject, we were not above figuring out little nuances of specific players or coaches and using it to our advantage from, say, eight feet away. My favorite is still printing out 2,000 photos of Brian Butch wearing a bra...my issue was the F-bomb. If you can find these type of things, use them; just try and keep it somewhat appropriate...

Oh, come on ATTF - give yourself some more credit. Remember when you wrapped ribbon around duct tape to make stands for signed basketballs for our silent auction (when I was about to crack from exhaustion)? That's leadership! :) (Btw - back then, The Barnyard raises almost $10,000 for Children's Cancer Research in a year...but I've let many of the traditions we started go).

As for Brian Butch - I know we've told this story about a million times, but it was still classic. This was the photo NateDawg found on his Facebook:
<a href="http://s101.photobucket.com/albums/m76/nadinebabu/?action=view&current=BrianButch-2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m76/nadinebabu/BrianButch-2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Not only did we make copies, but we personally taped them to student's shirts, so they were all walking around with them. We we worried if we just handed them out, they'd get taken away, and we knew they wouldn't yank them off people. I also went to Officemax and ran off about 20 big posters that we held up when he was shooting free throws. The best part was when his Dad asked me for a flyer, and he thought it was hilarious. All in good fun!

We also did the same thing for...was it Brian Cardinal or Greg Brunner? We made Rogaine signs.

In response to "cheat sheets" and the like, there is no way they let us do that. Even if it was as clean as a whistle, someone would take them all away. I tried two years ago.

Did plenty of enemy research against Wisconsin. Not a single DWI, possession charge, misdemeanor, nothing. Pretty squeaky clean roster. Nobody beats their girlfriend or gets caught with a bong. Unfortunately that's only us that makes it easy on the opposing teams. Closest Wisconsin has come to "controversy" is one of their wayyyy down the rotation (as in like...end of the bench) players from last year, a walk on, Kevin Gullickson, had a couple of underage drinking charges. He's not on the team anymore. Oooo boy.

Oh, really? Diamond Taylor and Jeremy Glover do not appear to be wearing red in this picture. Hmm.. going into dorm rooms without permission and stealing things... what did your research consist of? It wasn't very good.

The Brian Butch deal was great... I recall a good sign at the Kohl Hole when they were hosting Marquette... "Brian Butch.. 2003: McDonald's All American... 2008: McDonald's Employee"

Didn't see them on the bench...oh wait, they're off the team.

I hope to hear a few roid rage chants for Mr. kramer on Wednesday night. or at the very least yelling "hack" every time he guards anyone

My point was that awag777 is wrong. And it still is. You can give a special gold star to Wisconsin because Taylor quit the school if you want, but that's not what my reply was about.

Off of the top of my head, the 2 best student sections I can think of are Duke BB and Texas a&m football. Neither section is classless, both have tons of passion, both are a point of pride for the institutions and programs. A simple chant that starts with the f-bomb is simply boring and pedestrian. There really is no other way to spin it. Don't settle for mediocrity, students, be elite.

Do some research on the Cameron Crazies. They arent quite as squeaky clean as you seem to be saying....

I don't ever remember the Duke student section swearing in unison and I've watched at least 90% of Duke's games over the past 15 years.

They did a You suck, d!ck chant when Dick Paparo was reffing a game (see here http://espn.go.com/page2/s/cameron/hits.html) and coach K hated it so the next time they said, You suck, Richard.

The other worst thing I can remember (and Coach K called them out on it) was they did some sort of chant at Phil Ford (UNC assistant coach) right after he got a DWI. I can't remember what the chant was but it really wasn't that bad and one could argue Ford deserved what he got. They had another chant directed at a former FSU player that was around 300 lbs about eating Colonel Sanders.

For as many chants as they do, they're almost always on this side of the line. No swearing, no offensive language or gay insults, etc.

Duke and A&M both have strong tradition as an organized student section (and winning) and it creates a culture. In my opinion, students at the U treat basketball/football/hockey more as something to do than something they are a part of.

ive watched the clip 100 times, there is no way a 10 year old kid could understand exactly what was being chanted unless you told them.

Yeah, I hated the chant (loved the sentiment, hated the usage of "Fu&k"), but even I think that's a bit of a stretch. Furthermore, if he's watching on TV, that's quite different from being there. Easily explained away or you could even just use the truth.

Hearing it on TV and hearing it from the adjacent section, at age 10, are quite different.

Or turn down the volume and turn on the radio, though Spence would do more damage to a 10 year old than hearing words they most likely already know.

I have a answer to the problem.......

3000 in the student section

10000 in the rest of the Barn

Let try getting off our hands, get up and make some noise so you can't hear the chant........

sounds like the rest of the MN fans are the problem by not making enough noise and are just sitting and listening and complaining...........

Maybe the student section is frustrated by rest of the fans being so laid back........

Let show those kids how it is done at the purdue game.....

Let Go Gophers....

No, the problem was, as has been stated many times here, that the chant loudly, clearly and repeatedly used the word "Fu&k". It really is that simple.

That said, I hope the whole barn rocks Wednesday and maybe with a sustained cheering by the student section - after all, that's where it will all start - the rest of the folks will join in. I know I will.

Go Gophers!!

Dumb question of the week: Is there a difference between the student section and the barnyard? I haven't been to be Barn in the last 8 or 9 years so I may be in the dark. If they are not the same, why not.

Nope, they're one and the same -- "The Barnyard" is the name of the student section!

Thanks, that's what I thought. There were some previous posts talking about a student section behind the band that weren't doing the same chants so I was confused.

No problem - not entirely unfounded, though. So much space is allotted for "The Barnyard" - basically the entire lower area (sections 109-113) behind the basket that the Gophers shoot at in the first half - that some students end up behind the band (not a good spot to be, tough to see over the tubas). Because the student section is so big, one of the challenges is getting all the students chanting the same thing. As a result, sometimes "F*** Bo Ryan" is the lowest common denominator, and it ends up being one of the loudest chants all season...

I was at the game and it was almost as entertaining watching Bo throw fits after every call as it was watching the Gophers kick some Badger tail!! I don't think there is another team or coach in the nation that would get that treatment from our student section, but there isn't a bigger whiny biatch coach in the nation that deserved it like Bo did.

I would put Tom Izzo ahead of Bo. By the way, you would love having Bo as the coach of the Gophs. Your jealousy is showing badly.

Ummm....no thanks. I'll stick with Tubby.

Imagine

this chant somehow resounds with nary a "f***" in it:

I'm pretty sure it could be reworked to even be unique to Minnesota. And loud enough to drown out those mean Wisconsin fans who were shouting "Let's Go Badgers"

Although Bo is a very successful coach, I would not want him to be the coach of a team that I cheer for. One of my pet peeves of any coach is constant bitching at the refs instead of worrying about coaching your team. He has accomplished a lot as a coach, no doubt, but the constant whining drives me nuts.

Tubby has taken some heat for not being loud enough with the referees, and sometimes he could be a bit more vocal, but I prefer his style of getting after the refs about a few calls throughout a game vs. constantly throwing a tantrum over every semi-questionable call.

Were you at the game gopheralum, because if you weren't I highly doubt the TV did Bo's whining justice.

Sure Izzo can get after the refs, but I wouldn't put him anywhere close to Bo Cryin. One of the big differences between Izzo and Bo is that half the time when Izzo is losing it, his target isn't the ref but one of his own players that screwed up.

Well good luck with Tubby then. Personally I'd rather have a coach willing to fight and stick up for my team. I like Tubby and respect the hell out of him, but what has he done in the Big Ten and what has Bo done?

How long has Bo been here in comparison to Tubby. Bug off troll.

If you're going there, what has Tubby done in the NCAA Tourney and what has Bo Done?

Good luck with that.

Oh, and it doesn't look like we need that luck to beat your Badgers. Get off our board until you have something intelligent to say troll.
