What is the greatest Gopher game you ever attended?

10/22/1977 Gophers 16 #1 Michigan 0

I had a ticket to this game and gave it to my brothers friend so he could go with him and my parents. I went with my friend to watch Augsburg vs. Macalister.

Worst decision of my life!

What happened? Did Augsburg lose? It would be bad enough if they lost to Macalester College but it would really be bad if they lost to Macalister.

This one is easy for me. 1999 Penn State win. Coolest thing ever was hearing nearly 100,000 people dead silent while a small pocket of maroon and gold was going nuts. Will never forget being in Happy Valley for that one.

Honorable mention go to 2010 at home against Iowa and 2000 at Ohio State.

Many of those already mentioned, and I would add @Northwestern 2013. I'm surprised that no one has mentioned @Michigan 2014. I didn't attend, but figured someone else would've included it.

This 1977 Michigan game is the best Gopher game I have ever watched in person.

I looked it up, Augsburg crushed Macalester that day in St. Paul 35-8!

My addiction to Gopher football is probably bad for my health. Like most addictions, you get an early high and you want to repeat that again. For me, my Dad started taking me to games in 1977. I was hooked right away and that game probably has to be number one.

1977 vs Michigan 16-0

Some other times when the buzz was great:
1981 vs Ohio State 34-31 Hohensee 5 passing touchdowns including the tipped winner to Jay Carroll
1998 vs Michigan State 19-18 MSU was the last of the core Big 10 that I saw the Gophers beat
2000 at Ohio State 29-17 We owned the Big House on their home coming. My first road trip win after quite a few embarrassments under Wacker.
2003 Sun Bowl vs Oregon – the winning field goal was tipped, it just made it over
2009 TCF Opener vs Air Force – that was a magical night
2014 at Nebraska – they had posters of Tom Osborne for sale, they couldn’t find any Pelini posters when I asked

I’ll list one loss – 2014 at Wisconsin. Because it was the closest I have ever been to tasting a Gopher football championship. And at Halftime – you could taste it. Ultimately, we want to get back to where we were on 11/29/2014 and finish the deal.

Most memorable - 1968 Gopher FB game vs. USC and OJ (not a murderer yet) Simpson.
runner-up- Gophers beat Washington and Warren Moon (19-17) in 1977.

Hoops - 1976 Gophers vs. Indiana (the Kent Benson, Quinn Buckner, Scott May team). Packed house at Williams - incredible atmosphere. Indiana won by 9 points, but it was a heck of a game.

In the USC game Warmath kept field grass about 2 inches to try and slow OJ down. The key play was the across field latera pass l from George Honza to John Wintermute after a USC kickoff.
Wintermute with a escort of blockers rumbled 80 some yards for a TD

1993 Gophers defeat BADgers. It was the only loss on the season for Wisco and they ended up #5/6 in the country that year.
Another memorable one is the 59-56 win over Purdue that same year.
That was back when student season tickets were like $3 a ticket.

One of my favorite games of all-time was the Michigan State Halloween game back in 2009. The crowd was absolutely rocking that night, and I'll never forget Duane Bennett's immaculate reception off of Tow-Arnett.

This is my favorite game attended as well.

The greatest performance I have seen involving the Gophers was in 1968 old Memorial Stadium against Southern Cal. with O.J. Simpson at running back. He had over 200 yards at halftime. what made this a game to forget was that Murray Warmath told the grounds keeper not to mow the field . When both teams came out in pre-game you couldn't see their feet because the grass was so high. His thinking was that it might slow OJ down. He apparently forgot that it would also slow the Gophers down. I will never forget his comment in the Tribe on Sunday. Warmth told the reporters that he couldn't find a lawnmower on campus that worked so the grass had to be long.

1997 Gophers over UCLA in San Antonio. Absolutely euphoric, and the bonding of gopher fans basically taking over the Alamodome and making it our home court was incredible.

Recent U of M grad here - I have a few:

2003: Loss to Michigan at the dome. Heartbreaker but such a memorable game.

2010: Iowa win. Crowded the field upon victory.

2013: Basketball. Defeated #1 Indiana. Stormed the court. Will never attend a better sporting event in my life. Williams was deafening.

2014: The Iowa massacre. How fun was that?!

2015: Loss to Michigan. Us students were ready to crowd the field as our offense lined up. **** happened. Egotistical Harbaugh and Michigan storms the field. Fireworks literally went off (??) as me and my buddies sulked back to our apartment in sorrow.

Basketball 1982 beat Ohio state to clinch our last official Big Ten championship (I was a freshman).

Football 2013 beating Nebraska

Haa! I don't know if I would totally agree with that. There was a point when Macalester couldn't beat there shadow, so perhaps Macalister could of give Augsburg a greater challenge.

Interesting! I have fond memories of Macalester. I was on a fast track to graduate from Augsburg college but in order to do that I needed one more advanced economics class. Augsburg was not offering any advanced classes spring that I hadn't taken that spring semester but Macalester was so I signed up for it. The class was applied calculus to shadow pricing. Both the professor and the lectures were totally bizarre. I had no problem with the math and got a B+. The problem was that I had no idea what any of it meant. The good news was that I graduated that semester and was able to start graduate school that fall. Thank you Macalester!

1993 home against Wisconsin, hand's down. Such an upset and momentum changer that it probably cost Bucky a shot at the national championship.

That was a great game. Guys in front of me went all out with costumes...one was dressed as a toy soldier, green from head to toe with a little platform to stand on when he posed...with binoculars. Looked exactly like a full-sized toy soldier.

Iowa-Minnesota game, 1960, in Memorial, Iowa undefeated,no. 1 in both polls. Gophers undefeated, no. 2 in one poll, no. 3 in the other, This game was for the national championship and Rose Bowl. Hawks ahead at half 10-7. Tom Brown at middle guard scares the hell out of the Iowa center, causing bobbles, mistakes.Gophers wear them down in second half as Roger Hagberg breaks some runs as fullback, one a long TD run. Joe Salem gets a long pass off, spelling Stephens, and moves the team most of the field for a score. Bill Munsey is in the backfield with Judge Dickson. Tom Hall and Greg Larson in the line. Gophers ahead in final moments, 27-10, and crowd spontaneously takes up the chant, "We're number one, we're number one.!" And it rolls around the stadium. Best victory.

I was at that basketball game too! Haven't seen Williams that packed since.

Another great game was the one against Magic and Kelser at Williams!

I could see that. Macalester, and many other MIAC schools hosted summer events. I remember going there several times and thinking some of the people were so smart they came off as odd. Tip of the cap for being able to keep pace with them.

The Hawkeye massacre of 2014.

I always balance this one with the 55-donut loss in 2008. Man, that was tough to handle. Plus I had a completely wasted a**hole jerk hawkeye fan next to me. Kid was sitting stuffing his face and effing around when the band started the Star Spangled Banner...made him get his ass up...kept eating his foot-long. Worst traveling fans in the B1G...by a long shot.

At the time, it was probably the 2005 win against #11 Purdue. Of course, we didn't know that Purdue would fall off the map.

In retrospect, that 2014 drubbing of Iowa showed that we were no punching bag for (at least one of) our rivals.

I always love a good field storming. I've had the chance to participate in 3: 2011 Iowa, 2013 Nebraska and 2014 Iowa. Hoping for another on October 8.

What are the stipulations here? Do we have to vote strictly on the game itself? If so I'm breaking the rules and throwing in the TCU game from last year.

First game of the season at home vs #2 in the country created an anticipation I hadn't experienced before. Plus, that anticipation last for months waiting for the season to start.

Along side that was the fact it was under the lights and there was like 6-8 hours of tailgating action. The game wasn't amazing but the Bank was full of energy that night.

Didn't read the whole thread so I don't know if anyone has mentioned this one, but the all-time greatest Gopher game I attended was the 35-31 win over the Ohio State University in 1981. Unbelievable game. Future Gopher coach Mike Hohensee threw 67 passes including the game-winner to Jay Carroll on pass that was tipped in the end zone by Buckeye DB Kevin Bell. I was in the bleachers at the open end of the stadium and the play happened right in front of me. Art Schlichter had one last chance to put the Buckeyes back in front, but he came up empty and was kicking his helmet up and down the sidelines as the Gophers ran out the clock. The other thing I remember is that the game went on so long that the sun was setting and there were no lights at old Memorial givng the end of the game this surreal feeling.

That TCU game last year WAS pretty turned up. Over-capacity crowd...if I remember correctly we only lost by 6. Had Kirkwood not fumbled as he dove into the end zone we may have just upset the #2 team in the nation.

I would rank 1984 game vs. Iowa at the Dump. Iowa #15 goes down 23-17 when Gary Couch took an option pitch around the right side for about 25 yards. Andre Harris played the game of his life. He tipped about 6 passes away.

And of course taking former Gopher Captain Randy Rasmussen, his brother Dave and Dave's son to Hayden Fry's final game at the dump. They were reluctant to go, but showed up. Randy said he would probably need to leave at half time to get back home. I think the Gophers led 24-0 at half and I turned to Randy and thanked him for coming and hope he enjoyed the shellacking. He responded he was enjoying it so much he was going to stay. The final score 49-7.
