What is an acceptable expectation for a Gopher Men’s Basketball Head Coach?

We would have had a very good team this year if we kept it. Yet no one seems to realize this. Like memories only last for a week or something. And it's knee-jerk blame the coach.
So the argument is that if we had preserved last year's roster in a way that no one in the country seems to be doing in the current environment, then keeping the key pieces from a team that went all the way to the NIT second round would have somehow made us a very good team this year?

Ignore him. He doesn't think a coach can make a difference. He also claimed San Diego State would never be good again because Dutcher would be unable to keep a team together/recruit good players now that we're in the NIL era.

Intellectually, i know that's the right answer. But then I log in and can't help myself.

regarding the Revenue-sharing agreement.

OK - this is predicated on a lot of assumptions - but -

D1 Revenue-sharing in 2025 will be at $20.5-million.
IF that is NOT subject to Title IX considerations, then the bulk of the money will go to the main revenue-producing sports.

BUT - getting to the point now - on a recent podcast, Justin Gaard said "he had heard" that at MN, Football will get 70% of the revenue-sharing pool. assuming no Title IX issues, that means football would get roughly $14-million of the pool.

if this is accurate, and Football gets $14-million - how much goes to Men's basketball? $2-million? maybe $3-million? I assume that Volleyball, women's basketball and hockey will get a taste.

how you spend your money reflects your values and priorities. Football is the #1 priority at MN.
Men's basketball is sitting at the little kid's table.

Yes. We went from 2-17 to 9-11. And we likely would have made another big jump. Nothing is for sure...but I know how it works.

In here though, all we see is coach bashing.

San Diego State might have a good run once every 30 years. Dutcher's charisma won't keep players that become valuable.

Correct. Our administration has a PROVEN TRACK RECORD of not wanting to be good in men's basketball. They will never pay anywhere near what the big paying schools pay.

To be better than i would be at that job.

I'd like to be the head coach of a big paying school...and let me hire some average assistants.

Then let all the Ben-bashers pick any head coach they want...with the Gophers administration running the program and the budget.

And we see who does better.

Go to and win a GD Mayo Bowl level success.

There's no reason MBB can't be roughly equal to football. Relevant. Not national championship level, but a tough out. Wins more than loses.

Of course we COULD be good. We could have been very good THIS YEAR if we kept our players. (Christie was in the portal too before he declared.)

But we choose to NOT be good.

If that’s true that’s just really stupid. You give the men’s team a good coach and 6 million and they will be top 20 in short order. Give the football team 14 million and they will remain about where they are or perhaps gain a bit. The basketball program needs a big injection of cash to course correct.

The whole thing is just crap. I am beginning to hate college sports.

Wait, what you want Dutcher??? Come on, he wasn’t good enough to even get an interview last time…….

Coyle wanted to interview him but the administration wouldn't let him wait until SDSU's season was over. They had to hire Ben Johnson immediately. He was in high demand!
