I thought they showed a little after the first quarter. Definitely outmanned, by lots, which is disappointing. I don’t know how they handled Nebraska, that is this season’s anomaly. The other games are all par for the course this season.
That said, they showed some fight in the second half, got absolutely no breaks from a corrupted looking officiating crew. Better showing than OSU or Iowa, at least that is something, right?

Just feels like the program is trending in the wrong direction and has lost its identity. Cant run the ball and terrible defense where our star players (minus Smith) are regressing.

But you get what you pay for. We have the lowest paid assistant pool in the BIG (mostly because Fleck has taken flyers on unproven coordinators) and it shows. It seems like we’ve done an okay job investing in our players, now we need to do the same with our staff.

I gave them a C largely because I saw the effort and I'm a notoriously easy grader.

Can't teach speed and I was absollutely shocked by the speed differential between the teams.

Agree on the identity issue. Fleck and company have run a pretty much straight pro-set since he's been here with a drop-back QB. For that to work, the receiving corps has to be fast and able to stretch the field. We have had some of that (especially with Bateman and Johnson), but we don't have it at all this year except for the rare burst from Smith. Add to that the O-line is absolutely terrible.

Little suddenness at all on the defense. Smith is good and the back-end is okay but played terribly last night. LB corps is unbelieveably slow.

100% agree on the staffing/assistants and have said that in multiple threads throughout the season. I believe that could put them over the hump but that’s my opinion.

Don’t like the Oline play as there are some very highly rated recruits and I’m not confident there aren’t better players behind (both Carroll and Nelson have looked solid when out there in my opinion) for that right side.

We need to win in the trenches and that needs to be their identity because you will not out athlete tOSU or Oregon, you need to win the trenches.

Back to the original question. D, as the effort was there all game. We need receivers and corners bad.

D, and not an F because we discovered the end zone in a Nationality televised game for once. Helps with recruiting (sarcasm)

F. Extra week of prep and they came out stinking from the first drives. Down 14-0 very quickly. It is one thing to lose to a very good team, but to have not even know how to have defenders in the vicinity of a receiver?

F. Though the effort was better than the other 40+ point road losses, I can't stomach how poorly we started all those games.

Went with an F, but it's mostly reflective of the talent disparity and I am in a really bad mood. It wasn't effort. Our LBs were really exposed last night. Our OL... whoof. As for Drake, I don't know. He definitely shows signs. But he throws some really weird balls at receivers (especially out of the backfield) who have defenders ready to light them up. And he is not mobile. I am just beyond frustrated.

I thought they played decent after the first two drives… That said they had to compete against a team that probably costs 50 times what the gophers cost. And the officiating was as horrendous as I’ve ever watched. The Gophers were 26.5 point underdogs and the officials bosses made sure that’s covered.

C. Aggressive offense gameplan. Moved the ball. 3 scoring drives. Defense really bad. With neutral officiating it’s still a loss but let’s say take 10 points off Oregon.

I like Carrol, think he has real potential at Right tackle.

C

The talent gap is very large between these teams. The Gophers were closer than I thought they would be.
