The Gophers did something very important on offense.

They answered both CMU scores on the ensuing drive.

That is why I gave a B.

I liked the times when they had both of the top back in the backfield. I thought it gave the defense a lot to think about. Something to build off of.

We scored 21 points against a MAC school.

Can't be higher than a "C' and that's generous.

The points scored doesn't tell the entire story in my opinion. We had only 10 possessions in the game and the average starting field possession was our own 24 yard line. Only twice did we start the possession beyond the 26 yard line.

Not great but better than average for the type of offense we run.

In general, the offense was much more productive then it was for most of the year. The major problem was going to the "up the middle" well too often. Reeves was able to get more out of that offense than Limey was ever able to get.

That's why I think a lot of times it's better to look at yards per play. It isn't skewed by field position, how fast you run your offense, turnovers, etc.

I was torn between C and B. Mitch had a great effort, but I wasn't convinced that it was due to the play calling. Of course I could be wrong, but I ended up voting C.

It will be very interesting to see what happens next season with a new OC and QB coach - and - more importantly in my book - likely 2 or 3 new starters in the O-Line. The O-line was a patchwork situation all year. They were OK on pass protection, but I thought the run game was very inconsistent. Better O-line play = more consistent gains in the run game = fewer 3rd-and-long situations.

I don't have time to get into this debate again, but I still maintain that execution trumps play-calling. A run up the middle for 1 or 2 years could be a bad play-call, but if the center and guards give the back a seam, and he pops it for an 8 or 9-yard gain, suddenly it becomes a good play call. More often than not, you win games by out-executing the other team - not by "tricking" them with some surprise play call.

One final note - NO MORE ONSIDE KICKS EVER!

I gave him a B with a curve for filling in there. I liked some of the more aggressive stuff, throw to the hot receiver when you might otherwise run out the clock. I thought he did get a bit shy in the 2nd half for a bit but I give them credit for coming to life when it counted.
