Defense was spot on today. That team had a solid offense and we shut them down for most of the game. We didn't give up our normal first two drive touchdowns like against most teams. Maybe the defense picked up on my suggestion to make adjustments prior to halftime...

Clearly an "A". We truly stymied a high powered offense by covering their strength like a blanket. It meant we gave up some rushing yardage, but an easy offset to shut down their air game.

Shocked to see so many A's. Although I was a huge advocate for him at DC, the D took a huge step backwards when he took over.. Hopefully just an adjustment period.

???????

C+/B- for the defense as a whole. No pressure up front as usual, I think our only sack was Campbell's at the end of the game. Lot of missed tackles and bad angles, but giving up only 14 points is okay given that we played a MAC school.

What planet are you on? Or maybe I should ask if you need an ambulance since you seem to be confused and not thinking clearly.

This is what I mean, not a lot of successful blitzes, lots of missed tackles when we were a sure tackle team, players out of position, just a lot of issues that we didn't used to have...

There were some breakdowns. Some bad tackling. That 13 yard play was evident of that, had they just tried to tackle the CM RB, he wouldn't have gotten the TD... instead, the gopher defenders just tried to strip the ball. I'm not saying they played bad, but not good enough for an A. I do give them a B though. They bent, but didn't break.

I say I'm in for Sawvel as permanent DC.

C+ or B-. There were missed tackles, inconsistent penetration in to the opposition's backfield and too many times of trying rip the ball out of the runners rather than tackling the runner.

And their schedule included Syracuse, OK St., and Michigan St.

Pressure and sacks are two different things. I thought we put a lot of pressure on their QB. He didn't look comfortable most of the game.

Kind of a mixed bag - more arm tackles than usual, some real misses, but also some solid open field tackles at the ankles.

Their QB was 26 for 39 for 285 yards against Michigan State. Last time i checked Michigan State has a chance to win the national championship. They had 145 yard passing against Sawvel's defense. Can you say A+ for Jay's debut at DC! Can you say A+ for Sawvel's (and TC's) defensive game plan! I sure can. I will go as far as saying the he is he perfect choice for DC with his long term relationship; with TC and the fact that TC is a defensive coach at heart.

They held CMU to 249 total yards.

Here are the total offense for other games:

Ok State: 343
Syracuse: 520
Mich St: 340
Toledo: 349

I call that an A defense

I'm hesitant to blame coaches for missed tackles. Last time I checked, they don't control the players on the field with a video game controller. Blitz calls, types of coverage and line stunts are the things they control and that looked pretty solid.

my worry is that Claeys won't want to keep his hands off the D. But I will take two defensive gurus over none that were used to.

A- for me. Disappointing to give up 2tds in 2 red zone opportunities, but other than those 2 drives, CMU really didn't move the ball at all.

I said B. It was a solid performance but not dominating by any means. I am very much in favor of Jay getting the full time DC job though.

Question: Was Julien Huff injured during the season? It seems like we saw him in the TCU game, and then not really at all until Kill stepped down. I think he will be a huge (was going to say 'tremendous' but, you know...) weapon for us in the coming years. His ability to beat the tackle with speed reminds me of the LB from Buffalo that the Raiders drafted in the 1st round (not saying he'll be that dominant, but one can hope).

Some of that could be the rust of not playing for a few weeks too.

He played all year. We generally used him when we faced more spread offenses so he could rush the passer. Having him play DE against teams like Wisconsin and Iowa wouldn't be good unless it is an obvious passing situation.

This is what I wanted to say but wasn't quite sure if I was right. I wonder if he has a role in the future as a regular LB, or if he'll be used as a pass rush specialist for the duration.

What team were you watching?

Anyone concerned with how we struggled to stop the run in the 2nd half?

B, They played great kept a hot QB WAY down, MAC or not they made the opposing QB a non factor. Dude did not look comfortable at all.
