This should be pass/fail. Its a pass, A+

Can't be less than a C, they won. But they were out gained, out game planned and were lucky to win.

Exactly what I thought. We got away with one tonight. Lots to improve on, some of them should be easy to fix and instantly improve our game (penalties, snaps over QBs head).

I was headed for the C button for all these reasons, but that 2-point decision was a special level of dumbassery that by law required a downgrade.

Christian Ponder's "easily fixable" line that every week proved otherwise. Limegrover gets a D-.

I understand his reasoning, just don't agree with it. It's SO EASY to get an extra point and make THEM need to get the 2. I like aggressive, but not when it leads to stupidity.

Tough grade on Limegrover who's Penn State offensive line hasn't played yet.

Go Gophers!!

We won a game we should have won.

Team looked unprepared, coach looked confused, quarterback looked like a freshman. It's the first graded paper of the year so he has time to turn it around, but this one was not pretty, nor inspiring.

I'm giving him a D to hopefully send him a message and he turns it around.

Do me proud Claeys, this is the school of hard knocks, enjoy your tough love.

We stopped the run and special teams were great. Thank God Santosa wasn't afraid of a little snow when he came up from Florida. Nothing else was even pretty good.

First things first. I'm glad the game ended when it did or we might have gotten half a dozen in next week's penalty box. The down field pass defense was really and surprisingly poor. Correct that, bad. The O line did not respond well against a box loaded defense. I put most of the blame for that on Liedner and the coaches. We heard that Mitch could audible out of these situations and either he couldn't or didn't. Bottom line, our offensive scheme or execution made OSU's front 7 look all world and it isn't.

The goal line management at the end of the game was frighteningly amateurish.

D+ only because we won....Against any other bowl-caliber team from any other conference, we would have lost last night.

If, in the third quarter, I'm thinking (as I was) that Coyle is updating his coaching list then the grade has to be a D.

The team looked like ****. Failure to watch for the screens, etc on D is unforgivable. The coaches and offense owes a big thanks to Rodney Smith for some huge broken tackles and runs, and also ML even though he didn't have a great game early on. Penalties.

Grade: D. We were lucky we were playing a pretty bad team.

They will get better.

C+/B-

I didn't think there any outrageous decisions made, 2 pt. play included. In fact, I didn't mind the 2 at all. He was also bold going for it on 4th down at the end of the 1st half. Decision got the Gophers 3 points.

I hated the false starts. And I hated that it seemed the offense changed it's thought process only when the Gophers went down 6. It shouldn't take that long to get a firecracker in our tails to get going. I know he doesn't call plays, but he also is the head in terms of philosophy & attitude.

Win is a win; time to get better this next week!

What you said.

I went B - because B- wasn't an option.

Get Butt Beliema's "card" that dictates what you do for a conversion after each TD at every given time and at any different point differential in the game.

Now that he is out of the B1G, perhaps he'd share the "card".

Then we would NEVER have to second guess on this decision. Never argue the card....

I also didn't mind he 2. To me it was a no lose situation. Don't make it and we are still up, make it and we ice the game. Not a big deal to me. I'll give him a c for subpar execution all game.

I'm giving him a D.

Too many mental type mistakes, play like this and they're in for maybe one or two conference wins. If Claeys could be honest I doubt he'd give the team's performance as a whole anything above D.

There were many things to be disappointed with in last night's game but please stop acting like we're the only team that struggles in these early season games. Tennessee should have lost last night. Michigan St. had just a one score lead late in the 4th quarter against a 4-win FCS team tonight.

The question isn't whether the team will get better (they will). Every team has off nights. The gophers are breaking in a platoon of new players, offense, etc. The poll question is whether the team was above average, average, or below average last night. I don't know how it can be seriously argued that the team or coaching execution looked above average or average. Now if you're grading on a nebulous "1st game curve", maybe, just maybe average.

That said, it was ugly by any definition. The team was totally out of sorts for large stretches of the game but pulled it together for the win in the 4th quarter. Some of you have some pretty stellar beer goggles. Again, they will get much, much better but let's sober up, put on your glasses, and turn up the mood lights. Three weeks until Penn State/Happy Valley.

So you're saying TN and MSU are both going to be lucky to win 4-5 games too?

I never said anywhere in any post that we were the only team that was going to struggle as a favorite this weekend....However, my point is that they did this same act last year in the non-conference and a lot of posters said be patient....Things will improve and they never did considering we won 2 B10 games....I think u can also argue last years roster was better than this years despite the rash of injuries.

Someone said the pre -game speech on the BTN by TC was worthy of the "cricket" sound. What
worries me is the lack of discipline with the false starts , bad snaps, ejections, etc. If this continues in game two, "Houston, we got a problem". Just me, but I think Coyle will have a very short rope on Tracy.

Rah Rah speeches are as relevant as bulletin board material and an OL coach asking you to "play nasty". The naive may think it matters, but it just doesn't.

I would argue bulletin board material does matter. This suggests to me you've never had to dig deep when totally exhausted for that last little bit of effort, and anger is a good place to find that. it works. One more play.

Re Claeys, yeah I don't care so much about inspirational speeches Might matter more in recruiting, perception.

Man I'm tired. I don't want to play more. But wait, these guys said we are overrated. I'll show them.

Your irritating #takes on these issues has motivated me to get off the couch and chop down some bushes. So yeah it works! :cool02:

Name a satisfied group of fans. I'll sit and wait. No harm in talking about the team, pointing out there are things to work on. #discussion board

Winning or losing colors the perception of the game, but how the team plays in said win/loss matters to some. I'm a believer in moral victories. If we play a good game and they are just better leading to a loss then I still feel pretty good. If we play a sloppy game and squeak by a really bad team I don't feel quite so good. In my world, a win is not always a "win "is not always a "win". I realize this is jot a universal opinion. But I prefer to win ugly than lose in impressive fashion. I also think how the team plays will influence Coyle's upcoming decision.
