I didn't say last year's class wasn't good and I mentioned in another thread I think we are setup well on defense going forward, except at DT. Our offense wasn't good this year. They were ranked right at 100 before today's game and didn't improve on that. Mitch was awful this year, but we had no one better. I'm not as excited as some about Croft or Green who were lightly recruited as QBs.
The WR talent is subpar. The offensive line was average at best, and they chose to go with JUCO's over the number of redshirt underclassmen we have. I also think that's a red flag. So yes I'm worried about the offensive talent going forward, and I don't see a lot of hope on the way.
You asked why I thought it was the best class that I could remember (as FR), I pointed out that they were really impressive on the field. You pointed to their rankings. I think it's safe to say that Martin and Winfield are going to be much better than their rankings (already are).
Our Offense was statistically about average in the Big 10 (4th in scoring offense).
Mitch was awful this year. It's hard to really blame a guy who as DC until the middle of last year on Mitch's lack of development.
I'm not super excited by Croft or Green yet. It really depends on what you pretend to know (not you, but recruitniks), but Green was highly recruited. My excitement about him has little to do with that. I am kind of in the "we'll see" mode with these two. I think we end up with a JuCo at QB next year (the Hawaiin kid at New Mexico JC).
Yep, our WR talent is subpar. When you're average on offense, you bring back the strengths (running game), you don't need a whole lot of development from the WRs to go from subpar, to par. Heck, if our WRs were "par", we'd be sitting pretty.
As far as the JuCo OL, yeah, it was a sign that Kill's staff didn't do a very good job with OL. Those average JuCO players helped us to an 8-4 season, could you imagine our OL without those players. . . that's a big problem. Claeys should get a pat on the back for how he recruited JuCo OL, they helped us out quite a bit this year and will more next season. When you recruit JuCo, if they contribute at a starterish level, it's a success. This was a success.
I have a feeling your expectation is quite different from mine. I don't expect us to have a really good offense next season. However, we should be able to run the ball as well, if not better than this year. We are bringing Lingen back and I'll be excited to see what Johnson and possibly Howard can bring to the table. It's not like they need to set the world on fire to get us from average to slightly better than average on offense (which probably would have meant 10 wins this season).
