We dropped a a brick today.

Why is that delusional?

I doubt Vikings message boards bring up Denny Green when they are annoyed with Frazier.

If you don't see that every coach hired at Minnesota will be compared to Mason until someone achieves more then he did there then I don't know what to tell you. Nobody was talking about Wacker in 2003... but in 2013 people still bring up Mason for a reason...

I don't even get this mentality. Outdoes his what? What did Mason ever do?

Like winning a Bowl Game for starters...

Who gives a *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# about the Music City Bowl? Seriously....that's what we're upset about? We don't get to win bull*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# pointless bowl games anymore?

I'm not at all happy with today's loss. I will never be so upset that I wish Glen Mason was still around, however. We can do better. If it's not Kill, it will be someone else. The minute I stop believing that I'll stop being a Gopher fan.

No, he obviously can't.

Seriously, am I watching a different game?
He was 12 for 24 in a run-first offense. 24 attempts all game. Give him some frigging opportunities. Run some high-percentage short passing plays and get him in a rhythm. Don't put him in 3rd and long and *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# all over him when he fails to bail out his idiot OC. Limegrover is running to set up the pass against a superior line. When that doesn't work, he has to run the most predictable long pass plays ever.

This, but unfortunately I don't know if we have our guys in place, yet. And, a lot of us aren't getting any younger.

Nobody is asking for Mason back geeeeeeez & we haven't won *ANY* Bowl Games since we fired him. You sound like a scorned female its embarrassing...

First of all, Nelson has started 11 games, so it's not like this is the only game we can judge him on. His overall career so far suggests that he is not a good passer, so this is hardly a knee-jerk reaction.

Second of all, Nelson had lots of chances to complete short-yardage passes. The one dreadful interception throw towards Goodger's ass, for example. Most of the passes he is missing on are dreadfully easy, and something I bet he made pretty comfortably in high school.

In fact, Limegrover throws on 1st down quite often (the numbers aren't hard to find, and I have before to refute this factually wrong argument). There is a very even balance between the downs they throw on, it's just that they don't like to throw at all because they don't believe they can.

Then they should have recruited a different type of QB for this year's class since Steveler isn't a passer, either, or they should have recruited about three QBs because if they don't believe that our QBs can pass then we're f*cked not only this year but into the foreseable future.

Kill recruited Jordan Lynch, who is a run-first QB, but who can still complete a routine pass. (I don't believe he recruited Harnish, but he sure got the most out of him)

The point is that you don't have to be a phenomenal passer to work in this offense. We'll probably never have that because anyone that wants to throw the ball all over the place probably won't come here.

But Nelson is failing at even the most basic stuff, and most of the time it's not even close. Even "ok" would be a lot better than what we are getting right now.

Yeah he did. An Iowa team that was 1-10 in Ferentz' first year. He also beat Ferentz the next year. Mason actually beat Iowa in his second year. An Iowa team that 3-8 in Hayden Fry's last year. So he sure did steamroll a string of powerhouses.

OK, but Iowa was 4-8 last year, little difference there. And they were on the decline already 2 years ago. Mason beat a #2 PSU team on the road in his 3rd year. There is still time for that this year I suppose.

Geez, let's just cherry-pick and cherry-pick and cherry-pick. Kill has a big job ahead of him, but this deification of Mason borders on the ridiculous. In 2000, Mason's Gophers' gave up 51 points to a 3-8 Indiana team the week after they upset Ohio State in a huge win. We can go on-and-on. I don't know if Kill will succeed or not. I don't know if his overall record will be better than Mason's or not. I do know that comparing them is a pointless exercise.

The MAC is a whole different beast.

Yeah I'm sorry but I'd trade Nelson for Lynch in a heartbeat. He threw for 275 yards, 3 touchdowns, and no INTs against Iowa.

It is not apples to apples

Winning 40% of our Big 10 games, like coach Mason did, seems pretty good compared with how we've done since he left us.

The teams we played were different. We now play Nebraska each year. This year
we don't get to play Illinois and Purdue. We can beat them. Northwestern is a top
25 team now, they were a good opportunity for victory in the Mason era. The schedule
is brutal now.

We got dominated today 100%. We did not play well. Iowa is better than last year 100%.
And so are we! Despite being dominated we lost by 16...two possession game. There was no hope of an unside kick and overtime last year. Yes, one in a million but possible this year. Not possible last year.

Our recruiting is the best it has ever been. I pointed that out by stars last spring vs Brewster. Kill's recruiting is twice as good as Mason's....on paper and if you watch the
games. The difference is strength and experience. When the other team is playing senior hogs and you got freshmen and sophomores predominately it does make a difference. The third recruiting class will make a difference 100%.

We are getting better. We just need patience. In the first game we had no receivers open. Today we had receivers open. Wolitarsky was wide open several times as were others. Nelson was 10 yards off several times today. Virtually never on target. He threw behind or short to many receivers and overthrew guys by 10 yards too. I have been to a handful of practices. Nelson is far more accurate in practice than Leidner.
100% for many reasons having said that I absolutely would have started Leidner today.
Now what? You bury Nelson after his performance today if you start Leidner vs Michigan. If Leidner faltered today, Nelson rides in on the white horse. Now, you are either married to Nelson or you bury him. (And despite rhetoric...Streveler can't pass)

True but that MAC QB has made 2 Big Ten Defenses his b*tch...

The same Iowa team we played. The difference is that Lynch went 25/41 for 275 yards and 3 touchdowns. Nelson went 12/24 for 135 yards, 1 TD and 2 picks. It's easy to say that they are both 'run-first' QB's, but that doesn't mean that one isn't able to do both well.

Stength and experience? You're drinking Jerry's Kool Aid. Hageman is a RS senior, Botticelli a RS Junior and Roland Johnson is a senior. Our DEs are mostly in their third year in the program. Hill is a RS senior and Wilson isn't a pup. On the OL Epping, Bak are RS juniors and Christiansen is a RS sophomore. Campion is like 24 years old so really up front on both sides of the ball only Leuer is a pup.

Your theory is that despite being dominated they only lost by 16 which is somehow a vast improvement over being totally dominated last year and losing by 18?

That is a 100% reach for a moral victory in year 3 of this regime.

Yup. I'm tired of the same excuses. Nobody expects Kill's program to be up and running by year 3, but we just got our asses handed to us yet again in the Big Ten, and by a team that is neither that experienced, or that good. At a certain point your teams either win or they don't.

...and also will play OSU and PSU a lot less. Kill hasn't faced either of those programs yet. Not to mention Nebraska is down anyway.

I know people are down today after a bad loss to Iowa, but wow are some people overreacting. The defense gave up 23 points. That is darn good considering the offense's performance today.

Plain and simple: They need much better quarterback play. Nelson missed way too many easy throws and showed pretty poor pocket presence today. The read option won't be effective against B1G teams if there is no threat in the pass game. Funny how the two football teams in this town have the same glaring hole.

Here's to hoping Leidner gets the nod.

You could look at is from this point of view:

The offense was hideous and gave Iowa so many more possessions. And the defense still held pretty well despite Wells and Vereen suffering injuries.

Now, it still is on Kill to get that quarterback spot figured out.

There is not over reaction, this is a reaction to the recognition that this team has not taken a step forward and we are staring at a long season. I for one believe that as long as Limegrover remains the offensive coordinator this team will go no where. He seems utterly clueless on how to handle good opponents. He can handle cream puffs just fine, but put his offense against a poor to mediocre big 10 defense and we go nowhere.

It is tough to do much when you are so limited throwing the ball.

I disagree. We actually had some nice pass completions. The biggest problem was that we would run the ball for no yardage, putting us in long yardage situations requiring long completions. If we actually tried passing more than once in a while, we might have more success passing as well as open up the running game. But that what do I know.

Being a Gopher football fan is a thankless endeavor at times. The highs are too few and aren't of the standard we'd like (winning a trophy game, beating a ranked team now and then, and minor bowl wins instead of Top 10 rankings and Rose Bowls). There is also a ceiling for how high we can go. If we make the Rose Bowl once in my lifetime, it'll be a lot. My dad was 17 the last time we made it and at 69 he's still waiting for us to return, possibly in vain. We've had to endure too many false dawns, big disappointments, and calls for patience for rebuilding schemes that never quite reach completion. The team and its fans get little respect locally and have effectively none nationally. What does come often carries a patronizing manner.

I say all this because the inherent frustration of being a Gopher football fan makes us take the highs and lows a bit too much to heart. This was a very disappointing loss and is certainly a cause for concern. However, late September isn't a point at which the season should be written off. The Gophers lost a winnable game, but their capacity for improvement is great enough that the necessary wins for bowl eligibility can still be attained. I think these guys can grab an unexpected win before all is said and done. A month from now the feeling may be different, but right now there's plenty of football to play.
