We dropped a a brick today.

Winning 40% of our Big 10 games, like coach Mason did, seems pretty good compared with how we've done since he left us.
No it doesn't. That still sucks. Danny Hope won 41% of his B1G games at Purdue and he got fired after four seasons! Mason got ten! The only other program that would even remotely settle for 40% in the B1G is Indiana, and if we're settling for Indiana football I'm getting off this bus right now.

Just because Kill isn't getting the job done currently does not mean I have to settle for or in any way miss the mediocre *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# show that was Glen Mason football. Gimme a break and get some standards.

Because he's going to be the bar for any coach we hire until someone outdoes him...
This program has no bar set for it. This is the easiest job to have the fans fall in love with you, because all they really expect is decent, something they haven't seen in 40 years.

The Mason years were the best years most of these fans have ever seen. Not everybody is 50 or 60 years old to even remember when the Gophers were a national powerhouse but they were here during the Mason era & that unfortunately is the bar right now until someone outdoes him...

Where was our fight, our charisma? After getting spanked by Iowa last year, we just laid down and let it happen again.

Hell, I was in school during the Wacker years. So the Mason years were glory years. I agree with Mason's firing because I want to challenge for the Big 10 championship. I figure if Wis. can become good, there is no reason we can't.

I think we're better off just not ever thinking about anything related to Gopher football between 1970-2013. Or, at the least, not bringing it up all the *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#ing time as if the fact that Mason occasionally wasn't terrible is somehow relevant to right now.

I'm just sad I have to pretend to enjoy hockey again this year.

I completely agree...

Then you're delusional...

F*#£ Glen Mason. I'm so sick of hearing about him here. The guy completely GAVE UP his last few years because he wouldn't ever get hired at OSU. Forget him.

Hawks physically stronger than we are both on offense and defense. You are what you recruit. We are not there at this time. I think our best chance for a win will be against Indiana. After seeing the game today the teams coming to TCF will also be
physically stronger. Today we were handled like a rag doll. Yes, even Hageman. So boys keep the faith, but you're going to need the patience of " Job ". This recruiting year will be very important. We can't finish last again in the league rankings. You can only " coach up " a select few in any given class. Eventually God given talent wins out.

Perhaps if our strength coach would spend his time strength training the troops instead of searching archives for mythical national championships from 100 years ago, and the players spent the week preparing instead of blabbering to the media about "how much they hate iowa"..........

Thail is not saying that we should bring Mason back, but Mason is certainly the best coach MN has had since MN's last Rose Bowl appearance. Because of that, Mason's best year is the standard by which all future coaches are held to. I myself am looking for a coach that will make us competitive in the Big 10 and get us into the Big 10 championship game. Right now, I do not think Kill is that guy. I hope I am wrong.

Despite liking him as a coach, I won't make any excuses for Coach Kill. Eventually, you need to start winning some football games. We've gone from god awful to just not very good. That's not good enough. I'm not saying that the sky is falling, I think he can still think Kill is the guy. The wins do need to start coming, I don't care about the bare cupboard, the difficulty of winning here or any of that.

That said. . . we do need to explain a little bit of what happened today. IMO, we got beat because of QB play, WR play and poor OL play.

#1: QB Play: It's difficult to compete when your veteran QBs are both second year players. I wish Max would have stuck around, he would have been getting quite a bit of PT. (I said that at the time too).

#2: WR play: We haven't had much, we didn't have much left when Kill took over and we've been incredibly snake bitten at this position. I don't care what anyone says, losing Barker, McDonald and DCT hurt. It also hurt us that a guy like Harbison was injured right away. This is a position we haven't recruited well enough and we've been snake bitten, it's a problem and it will continue to be a problem.

#3: OL Play: It's a theme. . . but we are still young. We don't have any SRs, a FR starting an a couple SO starters. This is a position we FEEL like we've recruited well, so hopefully we start seeing a little bit from these guys (Hayes, Pirsig, etc).

Again, these aren't excuses for Coach Kill. But he's in a tough spot at these positions. Our OL needs to get a lot better quickly.

You're gonna hear his name until the Gophers have a coach that outdoes him... this is reality...

I fricken hate the administration for not hiring a viable replacement

I think we all get WHY Mason is being used as a comparison, it's just a question of why even go down that road?

As a Vikes fan, I don't always bring up the Brad Childress and Denny Green eras.

I think Kill is a good coach but as I predicted to win with his system (very similar to Iowa, Wisconsin, and Nebraska) it could take 15 years to become as good as they are. For as bad as his defenses were Mason's zone blocking scheme helped us overcome incredible recruiting disadvantages, trying to beat our rivals at their own game is going to take too long and may not be possible.

You're gonna hear his name until the Gophers have a coach that outdoes him.
I don't even get this mentality. Outdoes his what? What did Mason ever do? If we are seriously to the point that we're going to look at Mason's "accomplishments" as something to be envied, what the *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# are we even doing here? Honestly?

If someone seriously has the expectation that it will never get better than Glen Mason, I don't have a clue why they still care about this team.

I know what you are saying man. It just gets sickening hearing about him, day after day after day.

My opinion is, if the standard is being a dick and getting all p!ssy when you don't get hired at your dream gig, OSU, and then just check out, then yes, Glen Mason is our gold standard.

None of that had anything to do with what happened today. Iowa players were interviewed about the rivalry, it's what college football is all about.

Stop saying "our". Trolls are better when don't pretend to be one of us. You're an Iowa fan, so you're married to an obese woman. . . have fun with that!

Thanks Bob that put a smile on my face.

Look at Wisconsin at OSU. They aren't scared, they aren't coming out flat, they don't run run pass punt. Stave shows that you don't need to be Drew Brees to move an offense in the B10. Nelson is not Stave but he can complete passes. That's all you need. The problem with this team is Matt Limegrover and his predictable, ultra-conservative play calling. If we have a modicum of offense, we beat Iowa.

I just want to point out to all of you Mason haters that Glen beat Iowa in his third season.

Yeah he did. An Iowa team that was 1-10 in Ferentz' first year. He also beat Ferentz the next year. Mason actually beat Iowa in his second year. An Iowa team that 3-8 in Hayden Fry's last year. So he sure did steamroll a string of powerhouses.

I agree with a lot of what ruppert is saying here. I'm not getting jittery. Kill needs an entire recruiting cycle, but he's got to get some big-time guys in the program. We have a lot of "made" players, but we simply need more talent. This ain't an on-going showing of the movie "Hoosiers." The size of the dog in the fight usually trumps the size of the fight in the dog. Ain't no pony ever won the Kentucky Derby. Give me two seconds and I'll think of another cliche.

GopherinLALALand, I think Holtz was a better coach than Mason and Stoll was every bit as good as Mason. I think Mason was a fine coach, but he had played out his string here.

Problem is we lose the recruiting battles to Wisconsin and Iowa asking guys to come here and play in similar system. Once again angry Maturi was allowed to make the hire .

No. The problem is much more Nelson missing wide open receivers.

Not disagreeing with this and it needs to play out but for this program to turn the corner the FEEL has to become ACTUAL.

Along with that the DL play has to get a lot better to compete in the conference.
