Kathleen Doyle, who reopened her recruiting after the Nebraska coaching change, will join the Hawkeyes.

The Iowa Hawkeyes’ recruiting class has gotten bigger. And better.

Kathleen Doyle, Illinois’ Miss Basketball who had originally signed with Nebraska, said Tuesday night that she has orally committed to Iowa.

Doyle becomes the fifth member of next year’s freshman class, joining Amanda Ollinger (Linn-Mar), Makenzie Meyer (Mason City), Bre Cera (Mukwanago, Wis.) and Alexis Sevillian (Goodrich, Mich.)

In the most recent ESPN girls’ basketball rankings, Meyer is rated 79th, Ollinger 87th and Doyle 97th.

Doyle committed to — and signed with — Nebraska, but reconsidered after Coach Connie Yori stepped down.

“Iowa had recruited me early on, then stopped when they had someone for my position,” Doyle said. “When Whitney Jennings transferred (to Butler), a spot opened up.”

Doyle picked Iowa over Nebraska and Vanderbilt the second time around.

Stephanie White continues to annoy Boiler fans by reassembling the band outside the Hoosier state. Former teammate and current Boiler assistant, Kelly Komara, is leaving Purdue to join White and Carolyn Peck at Vanderbilt.

Another Purdue women’s basketball connection is headed to the Southeastern Conference.

Boilermaker assistant coach Kelly Komara will join Stephanie White's program at Vanderbilt, the Journal and Courier has learned. Komara’s last day at Purdue was Friday.

Komara spent the last two seasons on coach Sharon Versyp’s staff. The former Boilermaker standout guard and 2002 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year returned to West Lafayette following a two-year stint at Albany. The Lake Central graduate, who won 1998 Miss Basketball honors, has also coached at Valparaiso, Auburn and Northwestern in a variety of roles.

Where could Versyp turn to fill the vacant position before the summer recruiting calendar starts?

Versyp’s recent trend has been to hire former Boilermakers or one of her former players. Komara replaced Christy Smith, who played for Versyp at Benton Central. Smith took over for former Purdue point guard Ukari Figgs, who spent two seasons on Versyp’s staff. Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton, a former Boilermaker standout, was hired full time in 2012 and remains on the staff.

FahKara Malone and Katie Gearlds, both of whom played for Versyp at Purdue, are coaching at the college level and might be options. Malone is an assistant at the University of Indianapolis; Gearlds guided Marian University to the NAIA Division II national championship in March.

Michigan's Kelsey Mitchell is transferring to Detroit. Mitchell had a couple of decent games versus the Gophers last season. She posted 13 points and 9 rebounds in the first game and went 12 and 4 in the second.

The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team and head coach Bernard Scott has announced the addition of University of Michigan graduate transfer Kelsey Mitchell (Detroit, Mich. / Inkster). She will join the Titans for her fifth year of eligibility in 2016-17.

"We're excited to be adding a player of Kelsey's magnitude to our program," Scott said. "Kelsey, a Detroit native, will bring experience and toughness to our team after playing four seasons at Michigan. She will fit right in with our players both on and off the court. Kelsey will give us another scoring option at the post position. She's a player that can average double figures in points and rebounds.

"Having Kelsey join our Titan Family is just another step in the right direction for our program."

Mitchell played all 35 games for the Wolverines last season, starting 15 games for U-M. The six-foot forward averaged 6.2 points per game and 4.6 rebounds in 14.8 minutes per game. All were career high totals for the Detroit native, who was named the Most Improved Player at Michigan's year-end awards banquet. Mitchell was part of a Wolverine squad that advanced to the WNIT Final Four

...thus relieving us of that confusing two-Kelsey-Mitchells-in-the-same-league nightmare we've faced for the last couple seasons.

While we are rid of the Kelsey Mitchell confusion; in unrelated; but perhaps, to some, confusing news, Purdue's Sharon Versyp's contract was extended through 2021-22.

Love her or hate her, Coach Sharon Versyp will continue to lead the Purdue Women's Basketball program for at least another 6 years. Outgoing athletic director, Morgan Burke, extended her contract today, securing her position at Purdue, her alma mater, through the 2021-22 season.

Following Mi'Cole Cayton's eliminating Nebraska from consideration the Omaha World-Herald provides a current Husker scholarship review.

MiCole Cayton joins Chicago-area point guard Kathleen Doyle — who chose to sign with Iowa — as players who asked for their release in the wake of coach Connie Yori's resignation. Both were Top 100 prospects according to ESPN.

Four other recruits — point guard Rylie Cascio Jensen, guards Hannah Whitish and Grace Mitchell, and forward Nicea Eliely — are sticking with the Huskers. Whitish, Mitchell and Eliely had previously signed with NU, while Cascio Jensen asked for her release from South Dakota, the previous stop for new Husker coach Amy Williams.

Barring any last-minute additions, Nebraska should have 12 scholarship players next season: The four incoming freshmen, sophmores Rachel Blackburn, Maddie Simon, Jessica Shepard and Darrien Washington, juniors Jasmine Cincore and Emily Wood and seniors Allie Havers and Esther Ramacieri. Cascio Jensen, when she announced her commitment to Nebraska, said she'd be willing to walk on, but it appears there will be a scholarship available for her.

Women's basketball teams are allowed 15 scholarships. NU could sign as many as five in the 2017 recruiting class.

It may be something; it may be less than something; one of the Boilers top recruits suffered an injury in the Indiana/Kentucky high school All-Star game.

Ae’Rianna Harris missed Sunday afternoon’s girls Indiana-Kentucky All-Star game with a sprained ankle and damaged Achilles, said Indiana All-Stars coach Rick Risinger after the game.

Harris, hailed as the Boilermakers' most nationally acclaimed recruit since 2008, left partway through Saturday night’s Indiana-Kentucky All-Star game after landing on another player’s foot and twisting her ankle. She did not return, nor did she attend Sunday’s game in Louisville at Bellarmine University.

Hawkeyes are back on the court:

Head coach Lisa Bluder brings back most of her production from last year, however, including starters Tania Davis, Megan Gustafson, Chase Coley, and Ally Disterhoft, along with key reserves Alexa Kastanek and Christina Buttenham.

The incoming freshman class got to strap them up and work out with the team for the first time Tuesday, making it an important day for the squad.

The freshman class of Makenzie Meyer (No. 79 in ESPN recruiting ranks), Amanda Ollinger (No. 87), and Kathleen Doyle (No. 97), as well as highly touted recruits Bre Cera and Alexis Sevillian make up the No. 7 recruiting class in the nation, according to Blue Star.

Doyle, Illinois’ Miss Basketball from LaGrange Park, had originally committed to play at Nebraska, but after Cornhusker head coach Connie Yori resigned, she reopened her recruitment and landed with the Hawkeyes.
