WBB: B1G Off-Season 2016

Illinois fired Divilbiss a year ago, so it's getting a bit harder to pin all of this turnover on him (White seemed to be the one player who was a fan of his "work ethic," come to think of it). Or maybe the timing of this is not a coincidence, vis-a-vis events in Lincoln? Maybe she's a Yori non-fan who's interested in heading home, now that Yori is gone, and playing without a scholarship?

A transfer to Lincoln would be fascinating especially given the booing White endured from Big Red fans during her Freshman year. Of course, Big Ten transfer rules are unconscionable and onerous (sit out a season AND lose a season of eligibility). Although, if I understand it, the loss of eligibility could be waived by agreement of both schools. White's teammate ,Kissinger, transferred to Creighton and Kissinger's highly recruited sister is considering Creighton so who knows?

Well, speculation is fun; however there seem to be actual facts. It looks like the ACC.

Chatrice White sat down with her parents during a spring break trip home to Shelby, Neb., and outlined a plan she had devised for her final two years of eligibility.

White’s intent was to finish her degree from Illinois in three years and play her fourth season elsewhere as a graduate transfer. But that plan evolved. White has instead received her release from Illinois and will transfer immediately.

“We discussed it and I said, ‘Gosh, if you want out, you don’t have to wait,’” White’s father, Bob, told The News-Gazette late Friday morning. “She absolutely loves the school, loves the fans, loves her teammates — just loves everything about it. The one missing element was postseason play. That was the holdup.

“She absolutely struggled with the decision on leaving because she just loved it so much, but I think it was time for her to move on and hopefully move up, playing in the postseason and deep into the postseason.”

“The ones that are on her list that she’s going to visit or has visited or will be visiting here in the next couple days, it’s probably going to be ACC,” said Bob White, who didn’t reveal the list but did say his daughter was on a visit Friday. “She’s going to try and make a decision here in the next three or four weeks so she can get enrolled in the summer school, learn the new system and prepare to sit out for a year.”

Maryland's A'Lexus Harrison will graduate and transfer.

Maryland women’s basketball redshirt sophomore A’Lexus Harrison announced Friday she plans to transfer from the Terrapins after she graduates from the University of Maryland this summer.

Harrison will complete her bachelor’s degree in American Studies in just three years.

“We are really proud of A’Lexus for earning her degree in three years and appreciate all of her hard work and her commitment to our program over the past three seasons,” head coach Brenda Frese said. “We wish her all the best in her next endeavor.”

I bet Stollings gets in on some of these kids transfering, especially those that can play right away.

Stacy, Minnesota, native and former Chisago Lakes High School standout Whitney Tinjum has joined the Golden Gopher women’s basketball program. The 6-foot-1 forward, who has transferred from Bradley University, is the fourth Minnesotan to return and play for the Gophers since head coach Marlene Stollings’ arrival. Tinjum is a fifth-year graduate transfer who will join the team for the 2016-17 season.

Tinjum was Bradley’s second leading scorer during the 2015-16 season. She averaged 9.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, starting 16 of the 29 games in which she played.

IU assistant, Todd Starkey, is the new head coach at Kent State replacing former Gopher assistant, Danielle O'Bannion, whose contract was not renewed.

IU assistant coach Todd Starkey has accepted the head coaching position at Kent State, the Courier-Journal of Lousiville, Ohio, reported Monday afternoon.

Starkey’s ascent to the head coaching ranks comes after a historic season for the women’s basketball program. The Hoosiers completed a 21-12 season and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2002. IU’s season ended in the second round of the tournament following the program’s first NCAA win since 1983.

The wait is over. Lamina Cooper arrives this summer.

As we reported on Knucklehead Central last week, Lamina Cooper has signed her tender with Purdue. She sat out last season while recovering from the ACL tear she suffered at the end of her high school career. Like we said in our earlier report, Cooper will be with the Boilermakers this summer as she preps for what will be her true freshman season in 2016-17.

Here is the Purdue release ...

Purdue women’s basketball head coach Sharon Versyp announced the addition of Lamina Cooper to the Boilermakers 2016-17 freshman class Tuesday after signing her tender. Rated a five-star recruit and the No. 44 player in the nation by ESPN Hoop Gurlz, Cooper originally committed to Purdue as part of the 2015-16 incoming class, but postponed her enrollment due to personal matters.

Badgers lose one incoming recruit:

Alona Johnson, a 5-foot-5 guard from Milwaukee Riverside, has received a full release from her National Letter of Intent and reopened her recruiting, her father, Kevin Johnson, said Tuesday.

The others remain committed:

The other members of the incoming class have all confirmed their commitment to new UW coach Jonathan Tsipis:

6-3 forward Abby Laszewski of Avon, Connecticut;
6-1 forward Courtney Fredrickson of Minnetonka, Minnesota
5-8 guard Gabby Gregory of Irving, Texas;
5-5 guard Suzanne Gilreath of Fridley, Minnesota; and
6-2 forward Grace Mueller of Verona

Gophers do have a lot of guards. On the other hand, Vandy just canned Melanie Bascomb, so changes are afoot in Nashville and one wonders if Rebekah Dahlman is at all homesick...

Don't think so. The Dahlman family has old fashioned values that didn't relate to the personal side of Borton.

Pastures remain greener in Lincoln: Jasmine Cincore decides to return.

Guard Jasmine Cincore will return to the Nebraska women’s basketball team next season.

Cincore, who played in all 31 games for the Huskers last season, averaged 4.3 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists in just under 18 minutes per game. She originally requested a release to explore transfer options after former coach Connie York resigned and was replaced by Amy Williams.

Badgers add a recruit for the upcoming season.

Jonathan Tsipis has landed his first recruit as University of Wisconsin women’s basketball coach.

Kendra Van Leeuwen, a 5-10 guard from Brantford, Ontario, signed with UW and will be part of the 2016 recruiting class.

Van Leeuwen had signed with Tsipis at George Washington University, but was granted a release after meeting with new GW coach Jennifer Rizzotti.

“She’s got a really long reach from the guard position,” Tsipis said. “She’s multifaceted. Her best ability is that she’s a really good passer. I think she sees things before they come to fruition. She’s also a really good 3-point shooter.”

Van Leeuwen was considered one of the top five players in Canada in her class and played for Team Canada in the under-17 FIBA world championships in 2014. She has been invited to the U18 trials this year.

Huskers add a South Dakota commit:

A month ago when Nebraska hired South Dakota’s Amy Williams as its head women’s basketball coach, Rylie Cascio Jensen’s college future was thrown into chaos.

Things finally fell into place for the Fremont senior, last winter’s Super-State captain who originally signed in November to play for Williams at USD.

Cascio Jensen announced Saturday she has been released from her South Dakota scholarship and that she will become a Husker this fall

Cascio Jensen’s scholarship situation at NU is presently in limbo. Husker junior guard Natalie Romeo is likely to vacate her scholarship and transfer, and two of the high school seniors who signed with the Huskers last fall are also considering not attending NU as a result of the coaching change. That could open up scholarships for new players such as Cascio Jensen.

Cascio Jensen says she’s willing to walk on if necessary and that Williams will give her that opportunity.

From Pharmacy to Mike Kryzyewki, Fran McCaffery and Muffet McGraw, Jonathan Tsipis' road to the Badger head coaching job:

Following graduation, Tsipis faced something of a crossroads. He passed his pharmacy board exam, but yearned to carry on his family’s basketball tradition. His dad, Lou, played for the Greek National Team at age 15 and after coming to the U.S. he played at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, and coached at the high school and college levels for more than 20 years. He’s a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as an official. His brother, Dean, and sister, LuAnn, also played college basketball.

At the time, LuAnn was living in Kansas, where her next door neighbor just happened to be Scott Thompson, the basketball coach at Wichita State. Thompson was fired from that job but was hired as coach at Cornell and was looking for a No. 3 assistant. When it came to choosing a career path, pharmacy didn’t stand a chance for Tsipis.

Patterson? Divilbiss? If those are the choices they had, no wonder they went with Tsipis. But, as if it's not bad enough that one of the few women's basketball coaching jobs that has been held by a woman, going way back, is now held by a man, he's also making a ton more than his female predecessor? I hope there's some outcry.

She should have coached them better.

With apologies for (briefly) interrupting the Pitino threads, the Badgers add a Vanderbilt graduate transfer for next season.

Vanderbilt University center Kendall Shaw is transferring to the University of Wisconsin and will be eligible to play immediately for the 2016-17 season, according to Brandon Clay of Peachstatebasketball.com.

Shaw played in 25 games for the Commodores in her redshirt junior season, averaging 2.2 points and 1.4 rebounds per game.

From Dayton to Bloomington.

Amber Deane has committed to Indiana as a grad transfer for the 2016-17 season, according to a source.

This news comes only a couple hours after the completion of Deane’s visit to IU on Monday.

Deane played nine games for Dayton last season, her season cut short by a left leg injury. The 5-foot-9 guard averaged a team-best 15.3 points per game when healthy.

With Deane’s commitment, the Hoosiers have one scholarship remaining for ’16-17.

Stasha Carey is leaving Pittsburgh and moving to the Big Ten for Rutgers.

Carey signed to play at Pitt before graduating from Berea-Midpark in 2014. The McDonalds All-American nominee was ranked the No. 58 overall player by Prospect Nation.

The 6-foot-3 forward averaged after 9.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per game last season for the Panthers finished the season as the only player in the Atlantic Coast Conference to rank top-15 in rebounds, blocks and steals per game.

A quick pre-summer recruiting roundup (Maryland, Ohio State, Michigan State, and Purdue).

They signed three new recruits in the ESPN 100, but not one of them broke the top 35. The main question for the Spartans throughout this season will be did they do enough with these signings and if Mardrieka Cook, Taryn McCutcheon and Nia Hollie can help the Spartans catch the other two teams

http://www.swishappeal.com/2016/5/23/11740234/stephanie-white-accepts-vanderbilt-position

Not exactly B1G news but one of the B1G's star players and current head coach of the Indiana Fever, former Boiler and TV personality, Stephanie White, is headed to Vanderbilt. This will drive some of the Purdue faithful off the tracks.

As children, we were often asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up? Or what are your goals?" For Stephanie White, her goal has been to be a head coach. She already has head coaching under her belt, as she is entering her second year as head coach for the Indiana Fever. However, there is one goal she still has yet to accomplish: being a head coach at the college level.

She can now check off that dream and goal after being named the next coach at Vanderbilt, multiple sources tell Swish Appeal. It was reported late last week; White was one of three finalists for the vacancy. In that report, she expressed, that in order for her to leave the Fever, it would have to be the "perfect opportunity," which clearly this has become for White.

Fever fans might be upset or disappointed in her decision to leave the professional level for the college level, but the good news is she will remain with the Fever through the end of the 2016 season -- an agreement made with Kelly Krauskopf, president and general manager of the Indiana Fever, in the offseason

How many open scholarships does Stollings have available for this fall?

http://scoop.hoosiershq.com/2016/05/iuwbb-assistant-curtis-loyd-leaving-iu-staff/

Former Gopher assistant, Curtis Loyd is leaving Indiana's staff.

Assistant Curtis Loyd is leaving Indiana’s coaching staff, according to head coach Teri Moren.

“We appreciate the contributions Curtis made to our program over the last two seasons,” Moren said in a statement. “Curtis is currently exploring other coaching opportunities and we wish him and his family well.”

Loyd joined IU’s coaching staff in May 2014, hired by former head coach Curt Miller off of Minnesota’s staff. Miller abruptly resigned in July 2014, and Loyd was appointed interim head coach. Loyd was kept as an assistant by Teri Moren when she arrived in August 2014..

Loyd is from Dallas, and his Texas connections were a big reason why the Hoosiers were able to land 2016 recruits Ria Gulley (San Antonio, Tex.) and Bre Wickware (Corinth, Tex.). While at Minnesota, Loyd helped recruit All-Big Ten players Rachel Banham and Amanda Zahui B

"helped recruit All-Big Ten player Rachel Banham?" Who wanted to come to Minnesota her entire life and had to convince the coaches she would be a good addition to the team? Um, no.
