per the Washington Post:

Two weeks ago, Howard defensive end Winston DeLattiboudere III was losing sleep. The Howard County defensive player of the year and All-Met pass rusher was contemplating his future.

After cancelling a visit to Idaho, DeLattiboudere said he had no scholarship offers to play college football. It was a stressful time. He knew he had the talent to play Football Bowl Subdivision ball. With Howard County contemporaries David Robbins of Glenelg headed to Florida State and Ron’Dell Carter of Long Reach headed to Rutgers, it was easy to think, “Why not me?”

But DeLattiboudere would eventually sleep because he had faith. A spiritual side had him convinced things would work out, but more than that, he had faith in the time he committed to the cause, spending seven days a week in the weight room and packing extra peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to put on weight.

On Feb. 1, Super Bowl Sunday, that faith was rewarded when Minnesota offered DeLattiboudere a chance to play in the Big Ten.

DeLattiboudere liked Buffalo, but he didn’t feel the family atmosphere he felt at Minnesota, where continuity on the coaching staff stood out.

“They have guys that have been there, five, 10, 15 years,” DeLattiboudere said.

Any idea why he canceled his visit to Idaho? I'm not saying I would want to play there over MN or even Buffalo --- but man, if I don't have any offers on the table, I don't know that I'd be canceling visits.

Per the provided link: "Before canceling his offer to Idaho – which DeLattiboudere said he did because he just couldn’t imagine himself going to school so far away from home in Ellicott City – he had taken a visit to Minnesota’s campus."

Thanks mkAz -

Sorry, I should have clarified. I don't believe his answer. :) But an offer from MN might be much more palatable to leave home for than an Idaho offer was.

Why is it so hard to believe that a kid can't imagine themselves going to Idaho. There are certain places you couldn't pay me enough to live never mind go to school. Personally, I couldn't see myself at a place like Oral Roberts University, but then I'm not religious. A black kid from metropolitan Washington just might have some problems with some of the more negative Idaho stereotypes. Whether right wrong, we all have places ,we just can't see ourselves at.

Mike, I say you are wrong. I can see myself anywhere. I just don't know how to get there. And tinyarch is NOT gonna tell me.

Regardless of his story, I am EXCITED to have WD40 donning Maroon and Gold. Hope he can redshirt, but he may end up as ready and Richardson was to play. He could be the pass rush we are all waiting to emerge.

Motivation is a great motivator.

GO GOPHERS!!!

I can't see you in a dry county Doc!

Yea, Mr. Potato Head can be pretty scary. Now if was Iowa that is scary!

Still a mystery

Still a mystery to me watching his tape and seeing his measurables why he had no other offers? Player of the year from Baltimore? Hope he does walk into the 2016 Maryland game as the "bad man" that everyone from the Terps is worried about accounting for on the defensive side of the ball for the Gophers.

My parents wanted me to go to a college in Idaho, not a chance. I wound up in the Army. I showed 'em.

It's purely based on his size. Because of his height, there is some concern that he won't be able to stay athletic with added weight (opposite of Cockran). So the key is finding a niche for this kid. But his tape is really impressive and he uses his hands really well. He'll be an interesting prospect.

Someone, Google, White Supremacy Groups in Idaho and maybe you'll understand that there is a dark side to Idaho. It might not have had a direct role but the kid could have felt uncomfortable. I'm originally from Massachusetts, but a free Harvard education, wouldn't be enough to get me to live anywhere near Roxbury, where the campus is.

yeah...no.

So, now we just judge people by where the live on the globe.

No; but calling a kid a liar because he said didn't feel comfortable at Idaho and turned them down without an alternative is wrong. I'm just saying that that we should accept what the kid said. I can think of a half dozen schools I wouldn't attend, free ride or not, why shouldnt a kid be able to feel the same way. Just because any one of us would feel comfortable someplace doesn't mean everyone will.

We aren't judging people, we are judging the location. There is a list of places that I wouldn't want to live and that list was created based on facts and my own prejudices. However, that doesn't mean I am judging the people from that area. For instance, I'd never live somewhere rural (not judging, just isn't my thing), but I am certain there are tons of great people outside metro areas.

That's OK, Bob - you can have the traffic, higher taxes and higher housing expenses. I'm quite happy in a city of 4600 people where I can afford to buy a house and pay my taxes - something I could never do with my income in a larger city. As far as the recruit in question, it's different for every student. I knew kids who chose a college based on how far away they could get from their parents - and I knew kids who did not want to go very far away from home. Vive le differance.

You forgot how you can take a deep breath w/o inhaling smog. Add that and you have nailed all the typical battle cries you rural folks use.

anybody ever hear of White Cloud? it's not just Idaho, it's in our own backyard and the name still sticks too

Good article, worth clicking on and reading the whole thing. Not only is it surprising no other smaller schools offered him, but also a school like Buffalo would only offer him if he accepted a gray-shirt.

A buddy of mine was getting recruited there and he did not have much good to say about their university or Moscow ID. Nearest airport was Spokane which was 2 hours away. Moscow is the size of faribault and he literally felt trapped while he was there. Not shocked that a kid from suburban DC would not want ton on there. To would be culture shock.
