Wally Ellenson

I honestly think Wally has a ton of talent and I want to see him out there more than most of the guys off the bench except Welch. I think Tubby kills players confidence, and guys like Wally need that confidence to be successful. He had one play against Northwestern where he was aggressive and went to the basket but instead of a pull up jumper, he crashed into a defender for a charge. He will learn on the go, but instead Tubby pulled him immediately when I saw it more as a sign of aggresiveness and a learning moment. What do you guys think? I would like our bench to go as follows: Welch, Elliason, Ellenson, Ingram, Walker, Ahamnisi, Oseniks. To me, the last 2 guys haven't showed me a thing, a single thing, outside Maverick being a "point guard" and the fact he can knock down some threes.
 

I was also wondering what people thought of his first half performance. I really wish I had DVR so I could break it down!

I'd rather have a lot of talent and a little experience than a lot of experience and a little talent.

What is his ton of talent? He can jump high, but what else? I am not ripping your thoughts, just wondering. I do agree that the rest of the guys on the bench are brutal...
 

So my hope that we would see more of him was an epic failure against NW. I hope he produces some today against his home state.

Off topic, I'm worried about Rodney's hip. He was noticeably limping on Wednesday.

Call him and tell him it's a waste, the player determines whether they want to redshirt or not. It can be suggested by the coaches but ultimately it's up to the player

This season has certainly been a memorable one for sure for all of the team and hopefully more memories are made. I have to imagine Wally's two injuries have been frustrating for him, but he's an important part of the future of the program, he'll have three years after this to contribute, one of which will hopefully be with his brother at his side creating memories like last night's game.

The season isn't over. I have a feeling that Wally will get an opportunity to do something other than mop up.

Agreed. Wally will get plenty of time next year and after that.. and yes, he could even see quality time the final three games. When you are a freshman on a talented team (yes, we are talented), unless you are a McDonalds All American, you cannot always expect much playing time. If you get hurt during the season, it really puts a freshman behind the 8 ball. I think Wally playing with his brother would be awesome.. hopefully Henry and his family see the value in that..and see the potential (last night) of lasting memories.
 

Hanner Mosquera-Perea and Jeremy Hollowell for Indiana were both mid 90's ESPN grades (4 stars) and neither of them are playing much at Indiana as freshman. Hollowell saw more time in the non conference games but we didn't see a lot of him last night.
 

Former Gopher recruit Nadiir Tharpe (Rivals 4 star) didn't red-shirt last year at Kansas and played very, very sparingly. This year he plays quite a bit and is a significant contributor, as well as being the likely starting PG for them for his Jr. and Sr. seasons. It's not entirely uncommon for Freshman to not red-shirt and hardly play.
 

I am sure Wally's two injuries have hurt his chances of earning playing time this year. I am sure he knew there was a chance he wouldn't play much on a veteran team when he made the decision to play this year. Lots of kids don't play much as freshman and have great years as sophomores or juniors. If Wally has NBA aspirations, he likely wouldn't want to spend 5 years in college anyways.
 



Three more years is a lot of basketball left to play. I just don't understand why this is even an issue to some people. Taking nothing away from Wally (because i believe he will be a nice player in time) if his younger brother commits, he won't even be the best Ellenson on the team.
