Wow - this is a huge get for MN! Welcome, Wally!

First time Tubby has gone into Wisconsin for a player, correct? Hopefully he turns out to be a Jordan Taylor, John Leuer, Kammron Taylor, etc. for the Gophers.

Good to hear, welcome aboard! Do good things!

I just talked to Wally and will be putting up a story very quickly on his commitment

Is Myron still the beat writer for the Gophers? He hasn't had 10% the coverage Marcus has this summer.

Good thing we have J.B., Marcus, Ryan and Chris.

Goodbye Price, Dorsey-Walker etc... Hope Wally outplays these guys in the long run, my impression was that he was always super raw. Congrats though Wally! happy to have you!

Just exchanged texts with Tom at Pump n Run and said he is a "Very nice addition for the Gophers. Wally is extremely athletic and shoots it well."

Ellenson says he'll play shooting guard, but I think he has to be a wing. He's strong and athletic enough to defend and rebound.

Marcus article:
Tubby Smith picked up his first oral commitment for the 2012 recruiting class today with Rice Lake (Wis.) wing Wally Ellenson.

Ellenson, a 6-foot-5, 195-pound senior, called the Gophers' coach this afternoon about his decision after making an unofficial visit Saturday. Ellenson recently received a scholarship offer from Minnesota, but the Gophers had recruited him since his freshman year.

"It meant a lot having Tubby there the whole time," Ellenson said about his visit. "Just knowing it's close to home and my family can make it to the games was good. It just was a full package. I had been to the campus several times. The offer finally came, so I took a serious look at the campus. It was everything I was hoping it would be."

Ellenson, who also had offers from West Virginia, Oklahoma State and Utah, had a solid summer playing with local AAU team Minnesota Pump 'N Run, which included scoring 30 points with six three-pointers against the Atlanta Celtics in front of Smith at the Best Buy Shootout in Bloomington last month.

Prior to this year, Ellenson had been known mostly for his dunking ability, but he said Smith wants him to be able to be an outside shooting threat for the Gophers.

"He talked about my role," Ellenson said. "He said I could be a shooting guard coming in and I would be relied on to make a lot of shots."

How many scholarships do we have for this class? 2 or 3? Sampson, Mbakwe, and anyone else I might be forgetting?

We have two officially (Ralph and Trevor) but I anticipate they'll recruit a third player hard in anticipation of Rodney leaving or any other attrition.

Go Gophers!!

I would think recruiting will focus on Big Men for the remaining spots in the 2012 class, whether it is one or two more.

Awesome get for the Gophers! Great work Tubby! Can't wait to watch him play.

Marcus tweeting multiple things that Price has his choices down to New Mexico and UMN, really likes UMN.

Hammons also still very much on the radar.

Tubby considers this a 3-man class. Trevor, Ralph and Rodney to the NBA.

Price, Ellenson and Hammons would be an incredible class for the Gophers.

We only have so many schollies left, and Big Men are a MUST now with our best 2 players leaving, being posts. Unless Rod leaves, Price cannot be taken even if he commits before a big. Just can't happen

Btw, where is D Smith in this thread???? I thought Wally was going to play for huggy?

Jodan Price video.....I'm not sure what to think, that jumper is deadly, but can you even call it a jumper? Low release, I have a hard time believe that shot doesn't get blocked, and yet he gets it off just in time. Also didn't see too athletic or willing to drive. Based on video alone I'd rather have Wally. But SDW on the other hand.....I'd take him in a heartbeat

I think (if it's only 2) Hammond and ellenson make the most sense. that'd be an awesome class.

Price at SF fits a need, especially if RW goes pro, not sure how the SG's fit into everything if they only sign one big man. Seem to be headed to a 3 guard offense.

So this is what our roster will look like (scholarship players) in 2012:

2012 [Frosh]: Wally Ellenon (Mbkawe's Scholarship), Scholarship (Sampson's), Scholarship (Rodney's)

2011 [Soph]: Andre Hollins, Joe Coleman, Oto Oseniecks, Elliot Eliason

2010 [Junior]: Austin Hollins, Chip Armelin, Maverick Ahanmisi, Mo Walker

2009 [Senior]: Andre Ingram, Julian Welch

Definitely looks like we need some front court players. As of now we'll have 8 players that will play on the perimeter (PG, SG, SF) and only 3 that will play in the paint (PF, C), 4 if you count Oto a a combo forward.

Depth Chart:

PG - Andre Hollins, Julian Welch, Maverick Ahanmisi
SG - Austin Hollins, Joe Coleman, Chip Armelin
SF - Oto Oseniecks, Wally Ellenson
PF - Andre Ingram, Mo Walker, [Frosh?]
C - Elliot Eliason, [Frosh]

It would be kind of nice if Maverick transferred and Chip added some ball handling ability to play both PG and SG. Then we could free up another scholarship and still have plenty of PG talent on the roster.

I don't agree that Wally qualifies as a huge get, but he seems like a solid player. As for future scholarships, we definitely need a post in this class and I think the need is greater for an athletic PF than a C type. We have Walker and Eliason as underclassmen capable of playing the 5. At the 4, we only have Andre Ingram as a potential Trevor replacement. I think it is entirely possible, perhaps even likely, that one of last years guards transfers in addition to Rodney declaring for the draft.

I disagree a little. I think it would be a good/very good class but not "incredible." On Scout for instance, Ellenson isn't rated, Price is 3* not in top 150 and Hammond is 4* from a great institution. Again, it would be nice, but when I think incredible, I envision a top 15 class nationally.
