Visiting U of M for Purdue Game

Great write up, Aggie!

I heard you TAMU folk were pretty friendly, but I shrugged it off because I heard that from Texas fans.. And I know how you folk down there don't get along very well, so I thought he was being a typical rival fan.

That said, I wish we bumped into you, would have high fived, taken a photo or two and let you buy me a burger or something. Your bit on our student section, sadly enough, was expected. They aren't anywhere near as active as your 12th Man, and I think it would be a pretty durn good goal to aspire to have our own 12th Man. But I honestly believe there needs to be a culture change on the field before that happens. But then again, football down in Texas is not like what it is up here in Minnesota. I know our hockey fans are more like your football fans.

Good luck this season! Your team is my new favorite SEC school.. Otherwise SEC = icky.. =)

Glad you enjoyed your experience. You are correct with all the construction. Once it is done, this campus will be hard to turn down by potential students. Too bad I won 't be in school long enough to enjoy it.

Thanks for the recap, Aggie. I'm glad you had a fun time and got to take a tour of the Twin Cities. We don't have the tailgate culture here yet. The Metrodome really killed that for this market and it will take awhile to resume.

I'm glad you guys had a great time in Minneapolis. Your write up was excellent and your ability to recount the events of a long day of celebrations is impressive!
I hope we can get those students to get excited for football. I think continued winning will go far.

Must be related to DL65.

Thanks for all the info, Aggie. You now know more about the Twin Cities than half the people who live here.

I found this comment interesting: "People were generally friendly at the bar, but I noticed that people are far, far less receptive to you just walking up and joining in their group than they are down here. Maybe I was just drunk and stupid, but I seemed to get shooed off quite a bit for trying to talk to strangers." This is where "Minnesota nice" is misunderstood, even by Minnesotans. Minnesotans are very polite -- if you walk up to us to say hello or ask for help, we will be nice and polite. But walking up to strangers and trying to spend an extended amount of time with them is something that doesn't happen much up here (except for members of the opposite sex). You didn't do anything wrong. Conversely, those you tried to talk to weren't trying to be mean or rude; they probably don't have much experience with it. We're fine for 10 or 15 minutes, then we start to wonder where this is going. It sounds strange, and someone may even argue with me here, but I've lived on the east coast, and that's just the culture. It's a Midwest thing.

As for the football experience, I sort of cringed when I read that an Aggie fan was going to come up here. We can't compete with what you have. The weather held some people away, but we are fighting 40 years of apathy, and the football fans here tend to party with the Vikings. It's already better now that we have our own stadium. I hope you come back in a few years and see something different on a Saturday.

That was a great read, TexasAggie! Gig 'em!

Go Gophers!

walking up and just joining a group? does this occur anywhere in America?

Do you remember the old Budweiser commercial with the older guy in the cowboy hat? The bartender asks him, "How ya doin?" and he actually answers the question with a long, rambling answer. In Minnesota, "How are you doing?", "How's it going?", "What's up?" are all rhetorical questions.

Yes. People up here aren't as friendly as we think we are. We have always been far more reserved in social settings than the average Joe American.

With a name like Haliburton, no wonder she sucks a**.

I can imagine how funny it must have been to run into Goldy filming some spots on Saturday night, after having a few drinks.

Come on down to Aggieland sometime. The polite thing to do is to offer to share some of your beer or throw in some cash if you join a group, but nine times out of ten they'll just tell you to enjoy. The RV lots, the guys with busses, and the guys with the big trailer-mounted bbq pits are your best bet, as are the corporate tailgates and even the Corps or frats in some cases. Just strike up a conversation and you'll typically be invited in as long as you are friendly.

These are still small to mid-size, but these types of tailgates cook to share:

Is there any way that we can get Norwood Teague to hire you guys to come up and teach our fans how to tailgage?

Thought you might get a kick out of these videos, Dr. Don (and others).

This is very true. People here are weary of outsiders and typically keep to themselves unless they know somebody. They are not trying to be unfriendly but it can come off that way.

Nice to hear the TX folks would open the tailgate to me, a curly haired brother. I'll probably just stay here in MN and drink at Sally's.

Step 1....we need to get rid of the no charcoal rule. Propane is for sissies.

Yes! And open the lots on Friday at 5pm.

No charcoal is a relatively easy fix. The U opening up lots the night before (when many conflict with other events) to allow setup and likely drinking will be a tougher sell. Especially when tailgating turnout as it stands today is pretty weak.

I want a rockin tailgate scene as much as anyone. That doesn't just mean cars in lots, it also means on campus areas close to the stadium. But we have a unique setting for our stadium and campus that lends itself as much towards "bar-gating" and "yard-gating" as it does tailgating. The U should promote that culture as well (especially since it limits their liability, cost, helps out local establishments, and the LRT coming will make safe drunk transit even more possible).

What if they only opened the fairgrounds lot? It is huge and from what I can tell wouldn't interfere.

Not a bad idea, but does the aspect of possible crime/vandalism worry the U I wonder with situations like this?

I think I mostly concur with RailBaronYarr on this one.

I’m bummed that the gopher didn’t ride out in his motorcycle. The Segway was cool, but I wanted to see the Harley. After the A&M game we were walking back home from the bar and saw the gopher on the street with a bunny and a giant cup. They were filming God knows what, but we went and got a picture with them. I thought this was going to be the beginning of an epic night of making movies with the gopher, so I followed them into Williams Arena, but promptly got kicked out. Then, a couple of minutes later, the gopher zoomed by me on his Segway with some guy holding on the back. That thing can move fast!

Aggie, this is what you saw on your way home from the game:

Oh my gosh, yes!!!

I am watching on my mobile, so I can't see very well, but we were standing behind the bus shelter at the top right of the last frame while this was being filmed!

EDIT: Upon looking at this on the television now, I'm pretty sure that is me standing in the background of the last shot.

Also, Goldy's groceries magically disappeared between the first shot and the last, unless he got scared and threw them away when he thought a car was coming.
