Visiting U of M for Purdue Game

I didn't see this mentioned but I think that one of the coolest things about the U is to walk the Washingon Ave bridge over the Mississippi from east bank to west bank and back.

Excellent to hear. This may be the way we go, because I would much rather enjoy the game in a place that gets a little rowdy and has some fun tradition. Speaking of that, is there anything I should know about the student section, such as customs, yells, cheers, etc. before I go, so I don't look like a noob?

Then I would recommend arriving 30 minutes before kickoff and finding a place in the student section that is as close to the players' tunnel and marching band as possible (e.g. Section 126).

There are some additional customs/cheers, etc., that others have not yet mentioned, but you'll pick on these pretty quickly.

If you like to walk

Given your role on the TAMU graduate students council, I think you will enjoy the Scholars Walk, which has been mentioned in a couple earlier posts. Here is a link to a description and map of it.

Something else you might enjoy, depending on weather conditions, is a self-guided "Heritage Trail" tour of the University campus. It coordinates with heritage markers that describe the historic significance of various buildings and campus locations. The printed brochures describing this walking tour are no longer available, but you can print your own from the linked pdf file.

Whether or not you take the rest of the tour, be sure to get out on the Washington Avenue bridge over the Mississippi River that connects the East Bank and West Bank campus. Not many university campuses are so deeply divided! Express your creative self by coming up with your own explanation for the origins of the Shoe Tree on the down-river side of the bridge on the West Bank.

The U of M Alumni Association's "Visiting Campus" page includes the above links as well as a number of others.

Gig 'em.

What is your brother studying? I am a Vice President of the Graduate Student Council here at A&M, so there is a small chance we may know each other.

He's not on campus yet so I doubt you'd know him but he's going to the environmental science program. I'm hope to get to a game next year, from what I've read and seen on TV it looks like a lot of fun.

Like others said, the hockey game would be a good time, it's too bad you won't be here for a conference game or anything like that, but it'd still be worth your while.

Go to the hockey game and see the best team in the country in the best arena in the country with the best fans in the country.

The U-18 team actually has 4 Minnesotans on the roster including future Gopher, and 1st round pick, Hudson Fasching.

Common Man disagrees.

I love the swinging gates, but my favorite is the rotating block M, and marching it down the field.

Ecosystem Science & Management? If so, he's just a couple buildings over from my office in the Agriculture and Life Sciences Building. When he arrives in Aggieland, if your brother needs any help moving, getting settled in, wants a campus tour, or anything else, I'd be glad to help. Same goes for you when you come down for a game. Let me know if you have any trouble finding tickets or need a place to tailgate.

That might be it? Being a liberal arts guy, my brothers program always mystified me. But we will most definitely take you up on finding a place to tailgate when I come down.

And DM me if you are looking for a place to tailgate for the Purdue game. We usually hang out in the lots but if it's cold that week, we may go indoors.

Here's what I received from the president of the Minnesota / Western Michigan A&M Club via e-mail:

We do gather for watching games but it is planned
just days in advance. Up here availability of Aggie
games on TV networks is sketchy – we usually call
local sports bars Tues or Wed and ask if any of their
satellite connections will carry the game and if
they’ll give us a screen. So watch the website and
if something materializes it will be advertised
there.

If you end up being on your own, the seven corners
area on the west bank by the U has plenty of places
to go (this is the confluence of Washington Ave,
Cedar Ave and 15th Ave). Sgt.Preston’s, Town Hall
Brewery, Bullwinkle’s some to mind.

On the east bank is the Dinkytown area (roughly
University Ave and SE Oak St.), where you could go
to The Hole, Stub’n’Herb’s, or Buffalo Wild Wings.
I personally like The Hole because it is more open
and airy. But whatever you do I would seek out
some websites or call because we haven’t watched
a game in that area for a while and I don’t know
what places have closed or changed management.

I know Doogie tweeted the other day that the Purdue game will not be a night game, but I heard today from a reliable source from inside the AD that the game will in fact be at night. I'm not saying this is 100% fact, but I do believe this person would definitely know this. Just thought I'd pass that along.

It wouldn't be the first time Doogie got it wrong.

I was excoriated and called names for passing along this same rumor the other day. Do you want to share a virtual high-five if and when it is announced as a night game?

Will do! And for the record I heard the same thing from another person in the Athletic Department as well. And this person's exact words were "know for a fact it's a night game." We'll just have to wait and see.

Please, please make it a night game.

I'd be so happy if this were to be a night game I would give you both a virtual high-five as well.

Just landed in Minneapolis and headed to the hotel. What's a chill bar in Dinkytown for a Tuesday evening?

Closest one to you, is about 3 or 4 blocks straight down 4th. The Library. Start there, feel it out, and wander. Don't know how active it will be on Tuesdays. I don't get down there on weekdays much any more.

You're on 10th and 4th, the Library is on 13th. So after you check that out, on 14th (take a right) is Kitty Cat Klub or (take a left) for Blarney's.

Have fun and report back.

Listen to "unregistered user". Ignore Parski. It's highly unlikely you would enjoy "Lush"...

+1 on Minnehaha Falls. Easy to get to (Hiawatha Train access) and an absolutely great place to grab something to eat at Sea Salt.

I was just biking though the park yesterday, Sea Salt would be the perfect place for lunch but the forecast is for the temp to be in the 40's, not the best weather for that.

Stone arch bridge and mill city/excel park along the river adjacent to downtown and close to the campus is good for a walk.

$1.50 Shiners.

I like y'all's style. We do it in pitchers, but this is cool, too.

Wednesday: Shout House 80's night for $1.50 redbull/vodkas or Sally's (FREE drinks from 11pm-12pm) $3 U call its after. Library has dollar PBRs and Free Bacon.
Thursday: Library $1 drinks Or Blarney's Karaoke night (cheap coors and long islands. also Babes) Or start at Stub and Herbs at 8 for $5.00 all you can drink until the keg is killed.

Friday Pre-hockey game Burrito loco had FAC starting at 3PM with dollar pints and 1.50 margaritas. Post-hockey game. Anywhere that suits you.

Yes, everything around our campus is obscenely cheap (I miss it :( )

Not the best place to go Texas, but since you are around there hit up Mesa pizza for a slice of Mac n Cheese pizza. It is amazing!!

Walk through campus to get to Stadium Village and have a Big 10 Sub, then beers at Stub and Herbs.

Nice mention of Sea Salt. One of my oldest friends runs the place. Very good seafood and that weekend is their last for the season.
