It's common to be able to turn around a program in 1 or 2 years in basketball. So Ben could do it this year or next. Just gotta wait and see

What power 6 job was a 1-2 year turn around that has had sustainable success ? The best jobs took three years to build a foundation.

With the roster Ben is building so far there is no reason he shouldn't finish 4th or higher this year. Let's set higher standards!

There are a lot of established talented rosters in the Big Ten. I will be surprised if you are right. Tough to win in the BT without established proven BT talent and coaching.

So will I. I was teasing Builtbadger. We will be at or close to the bottom of the BT this year barring some excellent late additions and a great job of coaching the squad. This is not a Big Ten level team right now.
 

On paper the present roster would have trouble against St. Thomas...other than a unproven freshmen {Treyton Thompson} we have no one to rebound or defend the rim...The assumption by many, the Gophers will still add frontcourt help and bench strength to at least be somewhat competitive even if it is assumed only fill-in player year for Ben Johnson..

Got any examples of those 1 year turnarounds? If it is as common as you claim it is you should have plenty of examples.

Basketball turnarounds are easier than football ones because you don't need as many players to be successful. But expecting a new coach to significantly improve a struggling program right off the bat is setting the bar way too high. Coaches need a few seasons to get things in place.

On paper the current roster would struggle against Minnehaha Academy! May even be underdogs.

The Gophers would dismantle Minnehaha because Chet graduated. I do think the Gophers vs St. Thomas next year would be interesting--though I don't know what St Thomas has recruited as I don't care. porn pups comment about rebounding and defending the rim is a valid one.

When Minnehaha had Suggs and Chet last year they lost to Eden Prairie....do you honestly think that they would have beaten some of the top teams in the MIAC? There is a pretty big difference between 16 and 17 year old high school kids and college kids. Booker Coplin was one of the best players in Division 3 last year, and they were maybe 3rd or 4th place in the MIAC. I don't think Eden Prairie would have won the MIAC, even as good as they were.

Agree. Although much of Minnehaha’s roster are a year older than their grade. Chet’s been 19 for a month. Miller two months... Suggs was 19 when he graduated a couple others mysteriously older than their grade. Thus they are older than some 18 year olds who played in college this year...

I never said anything about Minnehaha and the MIAC. I have no idea why you quoted me to ask me that. I said the Gophers would dismantle Minnehaha (nothing to do with Minnehaha and the MIAC) I said Gophers vs UST May be a good game but I don’t know what UST has coming in (nothing to do with Minnehaha and the MIAC) and I commented on what porn pup said about Gophers rebounding and rim protecting next season (nothing to do with Minnehaha and the MIAC). So asking if I honestly think something I didn’t comment on is strange.

UST was in the MIAC in 19-20 (I don't know what even happened in the MIAC in this messed up year last year) and I don't think they won the MIAC (I think it was St. Johns). I could be wrong on that as both teams were at the top of the conference. I don't think that UST will beat the Gophers very often in the near future in basketball. ...including next year.

still irrelevant to anything I've posted. I agree that UST won't beat the gophers very often. I doubt they play very often. And I am close to positive they will not play next year.
If they were to play I think it would be a pretty good game.

The Gophers would have crushed Minnehaha when they had Chet and Suggs. That's why it was relevant to what you posted. You made it seem like if Minnehaha still had Chet they would be competitive with the Gophers. The best Minnehaha team wouldn't have been able to win the MIAC, let alone been competitive with the Gophers.

Maybe after they beat Louisville in the tourney, but right now I am so excited about coach Johnson and Thorson. It will be so fun watching the gophs play next year, because it will kinda be like and expansion team, and with the additions of fox, battle and the others I think we will be somewhat competitive next year. Not to mentIon all of the great in state players coming up, I think the future is bright for gopher basketball.

Year 1 is a little bit of a stretch, unless you want to include Kentucky. Cuonzo Martin also turned around Missouri in year 1. They had won 8 conference the previous 3 years, he won 10 in year 1 and was an 8 seed in the tournament. But by year two, there are a ton of examples. Going back through in just the Big 10 you have Painter at Purdue, Matta at OSU, Beilein at Michigan. I'd also include Howard at Michigan. 4 of their top 6 scorers didn't play under Beilein, and Brooks played very little. Those programs our better than the Gophers, but even going nationally, you have Beard at Texas Tech, Mike Young at Virginia Tech, Muss at Arkansas, Oats at Alabama, Boyle at Colorado, Tinkle at Oregon State, Hoiberg at Iowa State. I'm sure I'm missing some others, but those were off the top of my head.

Not so sure about some of those. Mike Young definitely not. Tinkle is a bit of a stretch. Beard took TT to the next level, but the turnaround for Tech was started before he got there.

Generally I agree with the premise that turnarounds in basketball can happen fairly quickly though.
 

I am very excited for next season because I have no idea who these players are or what they can do on the court.

How long will that excitement last next season is the question.

I am concerned that one game might do it this year for the excitement factor. We'll see but it looks awfully rough. The tough part of this coming season is that very few of these players factor into the future. Perhaps Thiam and Ihnen but otherwise not much. So we won't be able to say - "wait til next year, these kids are going to be great"- while we watch them lose. We are going to have to be excited when they play great defense or show promising offensive schemes.

Young had VA Tech in the tournament this year. There was only one player that played on the team in 2019 that played on this team. The roster was completely overhauled with Buzz leaving next to nothing. They look like a definite top 20 team next year. Tinkle had Oregon State in the tournament in his 2nd season. Which was their first appearance since 1990. Texas Tech was 80, 155 and 54 in KenPom the three years before Beard took over. In his 2ns season Texas Tech was 11th. That's significant improvement. And did it with a mostly different roster.
