He strikes me as a guy who would not connect well with the new world order of college basketball. I’m not aware of any health history but I don’t pay close enough attention to know.

Why take over at his place his dad coached, when he could come next door and build something up in upper Midwest that can be better than what his dad did.
 


Pretty crazy to be so unhappy with the state of college athletics that you walk away from $25 million dollars...or some such number left on his contract.
I read where he sounded very envious of Jay Wright walking away from Villanova. Gotta be pretty unhappy if you like coaching and are good at it ... to just say....see ya.

It should be noted that with Bennett resigning, the transfer portal automatically opens for the next 30 days for Virginia players who may not want to stay, although with the semester having already started, it may hinder some from transferring to another program, at least until the end of the semester, should they consider leaving.

If it’s not health related or he just wants out, good for him. I assume he is set financially.

My older brother retired from the USPO at the ripe age of 54 with full retirement Bennie’s. He’s now 88 and has had 34 years to enjoy retirement. I was always envious of him yet very happy for him. Wish the same for Bennett

I'm not sure what Jay Wright makes as an analyst, but I bet Bennett could get a similar package to take some of the sting out of walking away from the money.
 

We don't have to watch his crap brand of ball anymore. That's a good thing

What about loyalty and commitment, no sense of responsibility anymore. If its not health related kind of bad timing if you ask me. Hard to understand how someone walks away at the start of the season, March yea more power to him, not October.

Guessing he wanted to essentially name his replacement. The late hour means it has to be someone off his staff. Kind of like Ryan with Gard.
 

If the railcar ever gets back on the tracks, I could see some of these recently retired HOFers coming back to coach a few years down the road.

That seems like perhaps a knee jerk reaction. If he's miserable and he's making his players livens miserable, maybe it's for the best? Especially if they can latch on with another program, now or at winter break.

Another possibility is they are perfectly comfortable with whatever Assistant takes over on an interim basis.

Perhaps a desire to help whoever is interim coach get a full season tryout?

He’s young enough to start a lawn care/plowing business.

That would actually make some sense because with the timing the only real option they have is to go with an interim coach for this year and then try and hire someone after the season.

Not surprised to see coaches walking away from this current landscape. Yes they get paid a ton of money to deal with the BS but for many of them (who are likely already set for life financially anyway) that big contract might not be enough to deal with unrestricted free agency for your entire roster every year.

Most coaches got into coaching to you know.....coach......not be a GM dealing with agents and contracts and money demands.

So it comes to mid January and Garcia leading the team in points and productive on the boards decides he isn't enjoying it and it quits and that is OK. Not in my book.
