"Urban Meyer to step down as #Gators head coach this evening at 5pm EST per athletic department."

Go Gophers!!

He's done this before. I will believe it when I see it.

Hilarious that Florida plays Penn State in the Outback Bowl, and it's Meyer, not JoePa, who is coaching his farewell game.

Urban is going to push Favre for the record number of retirements.

I hope you didn't just jinx JoePa.

toot toot goes a blind squirrel on his wanting out
though i did miss on his next step after that

I Gopher Coach Kill

Someone should tell him that "retirement" isn't a synonym for "a day off".

How is such an intense guy going to be able to retire at this age?

The domino effect will be fun to watch in the big-name coaching ranks. Remember when IN, CO and MN were the big jobs in this "quiet" year of coach transitions?

The most likely is Mullen, so that won't cause a major domino effect. I'm thinking Miami wishes they were a bit quicker on the draw though.

hmmm

Meyer reuniting with Tebow in Denver?

I dont remember how seriously Mullen was looking at us, but this could be a reason he said no, if in fact he did...

Health issues aside, I can't help but wonder if maybe he knows something is coming and is jumping ship, a la Pete Carroll.

Don't "wonder" about the NCAA. Urban's very clean on that score.

Urban's family is "set" financially - he doesn't need the paycheck.

Urban's a "sports dad" of a "sports family" - both daughters are playing volleyball (Nikki @ Georgia Tech), son Nate is 10. He can't coach for 10 more years and then rewind & experience his kids "growing up & out on their own." Given his personality - definite "Type A" - trying to balance both isn't going to work (to some extent, he tried to do that this year).

Here's my WAG about what happened:

* The health scare - Esophageal spasms - shook him badly. It was a "light bulb moment" when he realized the way he'd always approached coaching was demanding too much of him.

* He came back, at least in part, because he believed retiring the day after Christmas would significantly damage the program (History - Spurrier retired the day after the Orange Bowl & the Gators wound up with Ron Zook). IMO, he also thought he could back off some and strike a balance.

* This year was a "Murphy's Law" season. Big staff turnover, significant lineup turnover, etc. The worst thing, IMO, was the attempt to retool the offense to fit John Brantley's talents (drop back, pocket passer) failed miserably.

* Urban came to the conclusion the "new style" won't work and he's no longer willing to make the family sacrifices his old style demands.
