Urban Meyer on Programs going the wrong direction.

Yup

it’s really easy for a guy that already has done shady stuff so he could have elite players on his team to retroactively say that if a team isn’t winning it isn’t a talent issue....it’s an issue of trust, a functional environment, and unselfishness

Because if those were the only things necessary he probably wouldn’t have recruited those headaches

Exactly.

Easy for Urban to say. He was 83-9 at Ohio State. In those 92 games, he had the more talented team than the opponent about 88 times. So, he better look at his assistant coach cross-eyed if he says the player isn't any good. To Urban's credit, they recruited a roster full of NFL caliber players.

But, the same rules can't apply to all other programs. Lovie Smith's players might be the most cohesive, trusting guys God ever created. But, they aren't top notch Big Ten football players. So, if his assistant coach says the player isn't very good (in relation to other Big Ten players), Lovie's assistant coach is simply telling Lovie the truth. And, isn't that the root of trust?

Urban didn't beat Illinois all the time because his players trusted him more than the Illini trusted Lovie Smith. Urban beat Illinois because he had a decided talent advantage (and quite frankly, likely more dysfunction).
