U: Fired up to have Corey Hetherman back leading our elite defense for two more years!

I don't question that Rutgers was snooping around based on history. It's probably why PJ got him a nice raise and 2 year contract.
Tony will use this post as proof that hetherman’s agent duped Coyle

Did he leak the Rutgers rumor to get more💰?

This year was the "prove it" year, next season he gets paid like a successful P4 coordinator.

He did a lot better than Rossi did at MSU, where the team went 6 consecutive Big Ten games without a sack and finished 15th place in scoring defense.

At Thanksgiving my MSU family was puzzled why I was bummed to see Rossi leave.

I was wondering earlier in the week, was Hetherman’s success largely due to his coaching or him coming into a great situation?

He had play makers on every level of the defense, and Lindenberg coming back in the middle. I’m excited to see what kind of transfers come in, along with what he can do in years to come

While the Gophers have some good defenders, the roster here is never talented enough to make a bad coach look good in Big Ten games.

The Gophers possessed the ball for about 3 minutes less per game in 2024 (30:51 avg) than the Rossi years. They passed more and did less deliberate clock-milking, which led to an average of about 4 more opponent plays faced per game than the prior 5 year average.

He was absolutely setup to succeed with talent and a proven defense.

But I also think he ... is good, I think his background really seems to support that, and being a coach who can take a good defense and keep it good is important.

Could put me in charge of that "setup to succeed" kinda situation ... not so good results I think.

I get the concept but I think when rumors like that start as the HC:

You call that guy up and say "hey man are you getting offers / interest in X".

At that point you expect in a professional relationship / guy you're working with to be honest. If he isn't, that's on him and yeah he could profit from it.

But PJ knows Shiano too ... he can verify this. It would take a lot of conspiracy for everyone to lie and play this rumor into a pay day. Coaching is a lot about relationships, don't want to undo that.

Someone might do it, I don't doubt some folks do it ... but I think the whole "plant rumor get paid" is less likely to work and has a lot of risk.

Wonder what the details of his contract are now. How much of a pay raise did he get? What's his buyout?

I feel like buyout is ... almost irrelevant as far as keeping someone at this level.

Someone really wants him, they will pay.

Deserves its own thread, not buried in Rutgers bed wetting thread:

Go Gophers!!
Great news! Wearing these Depends isn't the comfortable.

Seriously, he seems to employ a more "forward" defense than Rossi does. Maybe that boils down to personnel, but our defense seemed more disruptive this year rather than being a read/react scheme.

Having no linebackers due to injuries last season played a big role in that
I agree. Now, I really like Hetherman and glad he's staying. Think he's very competent and continuity is good.

But, last year was Rossi's worst with the Gophers. His previous years were close to what H did last year. He was hurt by bad LB play due to injuries.

Happy to see we will have this continuity in a key coordinator role.
