U: Fired up to have Corey Hetherman back leading our elite defense for two more years!

This year was the "prove it" year, next season he gets paid like a successful P4 coordinator.

He did a lot better than Rossi did at MSU, where the team went 6 consecutive Big Ten games without a sack and finished 15th place in scoring defense.

At Thanksgiving my MSU family was puzzled why I was bummed to see Rossi leave.
Maybe it was the talent Rossi inherited when he took over in 2018? By just playing solid base defense over whatever Rob Smith was trying to do made Rossi look good.
This year’s defense once Lindenberg got healthy was maybe the best in Fleck’s time here?

Yea, not sure of the intricacies of the personnel or details of how, but Rossi gave us some good years and there was a reason MSU came after him.
Happy we have who we have though.

Effing Rossi mailed it in before the Purdue game last year after interviewing for the MSU job. Fleck hinted at something going on behind the scenes in the week leading up to that. Rossi can go pound sand.

How did that happen? MSU didn't hire their coach until 2 weeks after the Purdue game, once Oregon State's season was over. Rossi didn't take the MSU job until another 2 weeks after Jonathan Smith was hired as HC.

Smith's DC stayed to be the new head coach at Oregon State or I imagine he would be the current DC at Michigan State.

Rossi was good. I think he really struggled to find solutions last year though.

I don't think it's necessary to bury Rossi who delivered the Gophers some very good defensive units. Hetherman did a solid job, year two should be better
I agree, but it did always feel like Rossi was a DC built for the B1G West. Whenever he faced any team with a legit quarterback they’d hang 30-50 on us

Last year was rough with injuries and a lot of inexperienced players.
Yeah last year would have been tough for any DC. Not only were there injuries, but the staff really had a down year at bringing in transfers. Other than Jack Henderson I think it was mostly swing and miss last year. This year they hit on most of them.

How did that happen?
CIA

Any conspiracy involves them😉

I don't question that Rutgers was snooping around based on history. It's probably why PJ got him a nice raise and 2 year contract.
I am sure lots of teams were...that doesn't make Tony's BS anything more than BS. He is just Doogie with a normal name.

I really think Rossi is a solid Defensive coordinator but a poor LB position coach. Very impressed with Hetherman with his work with LBs and his aggressive play calling this year.

Happy we were able to keep Hetherman, this seems like the bare minimum that administration/bor can do after losing multiple coordinators to other Big Ten schools in recent years. It's one thing to lose a guy to be the DC at Texas or Georgia and its a whole other thing to lose guys to Michigan State or Rutgers...especially when we aren't poaching guys for lateral position moves within the conference.

So you're saying it would have been smart to overpay an underachieving Rossi just so we could keep him from making a lateral move?

To me, if you think you can get a guy that's as good or better than the guy you currently have, and can pay $500,000 less, that seems like a smart move.

He inherited a pretty good situation. He also didn't screw it up...

The (hopefully) promising thing is that he did it without having his own recruits for his preferred style. One would think if he has a few years to bring in guys that are a perfect fit with what he wants to do, that it could get better.

I didn't interpret that from his post at all. I think he's saying that our guys leave for lateral positions but the replacements we were bringing in were from lower positions, like last year bringing in a LB coach to be the DC.

Now that he has proven himself, I think @EG#9 was simply saying it's nice to keep a P4 coordinator vs bringing in another position coach for the spot.

I re-read it and that's not at all what I got from his post. But whatever...glad we have Hetherman and it seems like it was the smart move to let Rossi go and not overpay.

I don't know, MSU wasn't a very good team. I wouldn't write him off after 1 year.

I am happy with Hetherman, but you can't ignore that there were a lot of injuries on last years D.
He faced 8 bowl teams and 3 of the TOP 4 teams and 6 of top 7 teams in conference play. They beat Iowa
