Tubby: This is probably the worse defensive team we've had since I've been here

I agree, among Tubby's many transgressions, remaining calm after a big win when the team collapsed the last time he got excited after a big win is not one of them.

That is the least of the problems! I don't care if he does the Harlem Shake or cries after a win...as long as we win.

I think we are in agreement. How he responds after wins doesn't bother me so long as the wins keep on coming.

Because one poor game is clearly how you define a team's defensive ability. Defense was their strong suit throughout the season.

Correct. The worst defensive team since he's been here wouldn't have kept Penn St. from scoring for the first twelve minutes of the first half.

2 "One and Dones" ahead- then what!

Given the condidtion of Tubby's' Gophers, the team has two "one and done" events ahead- BT tourney ( and after a gift selection) one NCAA game.

Norwood has to finesse an arrangement for Tubby to retire with a discounted buy-out or face a big decline in season ticket renewals and a very weakened position of the program recruiting big ten caliber players. With all the freshman on other teams contributing , the Big Ten will be tougher next year. Status quo with Tubby seems like we are headed for a below 9th place finish next year

How so? The offense has ranked ahead of the defense in efficiency all year.

That's true. What's also true is that this year's defense is actually ranked higher from a defensive efficiency standpoint than many others.

Ranking by season

'12 - 48
'11 - 62

You could possibly argue that in absolute terms this year's team is the worst defensively, but that would be a hard case to make with every national pundit decrying the lack of offense in college basketball.

1. I heard the best observation about this team this morning from Bob Sansevere: "This team is like Randy Moss. They play when they want to play."

2. Statistics be damned because neither Tubby nor the Team are interacting in constructive and meaningful manners. That kind of dysfunction cannot be shown in game statistics.

3. This team and coach need to put their egos aside if they want to go farther than one and done in both the B1G TEN and NCAA tournaments.

Talked more about it here, but those are the KenPom adjusted defensive rankings.. the raw numbers are:

Season RawD
2012-13 104
2011-12 142
2010-11 197
2009-10 65
2008-09 61
2007-08 55

Better than the last two seasons, but not very good.

As you said in your original tweet ... I miss Damien. Blasphemous he didn't make defensive teams for the big 10.

Might be correct but I can't believe we have a full roster of uncoachable players.

A) How do you figure out what the KenPom adjusted efficiency is for a particular game?

B) You make the case that the adjusted efficiency doesn't tell the whole story, but I don't think you make the case that it tells less of a story than the raw numbers. Certainly the effect of having Nate Wolters out for one game on Minnesota's schedule is less than the effect of playing weaker competition across the entire schedule.

C) Regardless, stats don't back up the idea that this is the worst defensive team since Tubby's been here.

A) There can also be smaller adjustments for site of the game, but the majority of the calculation is... for example, if you're trying to calculate the Adj Off Eff for a game, take your team's raw/actual offensive efficiency for that game and multiply by the avg D1 efficiency (which is usually around 1.00 per possession.. fluctuates throughout the season, but I think right now it's at 1.006) and divide by the opponent's adjusted defensive efficiency (for the season).

The calculation for a particular game will change with every game played in NCAA basketball throughout the year (i.e., because the avg D1 efficiency will be affected and the avg adjusted efficiencies of opponents will also change throughout the year).

B) Exactly right - I'd take adjusted over raw in almost any example over the years. Just was making the point that "adjusted" might include some assumptions that are bad and if you don't understand and/or quantify them, the adjusted figure you use isn't as good as you may believe.

C) Yep.

Loved our defense Tubby's first year. We were just so damn active. It was great watching teams struggle at times to make it over half within 10 seconds and seeing the shot clock expire on teams before they even could get a shot up. It gave me false hope though.

That's not a very comforting quote, especially considering how lost we look on offense a good share of the time.
