Tubby subs

If you're in your 4th year of coaching, and you need Maverick Ahanmisi to play point guard for you on the road against the #2 team in the country, you don't deserve a 7 figure salary. Can we finally get one of these ACC/SEC rumors to come true this offseason?

another iverson turnover!!come on...this is getting ugly now...

Agree. Iverson is so inconsistent it is comical. I wish we would go with a small lineup with Mbakwe at center. I would argue our best lineup right now is:

Mbakwe
Williams
Armelin
Hoff
Nolen

It's so frustrating to watch Iverson this year. He played so well at the end of the year last year. I thought he really improved and was excited for this year.

Mbakwe is the only one playing well today. Hoffarber has been terrible.

Maverick. I can't understand the minutes this guy gets. This kid is no where near a D1 basketball player. Not even close. He can't dribble, can't pass, plays terrible defense. All he can do is shoot an occasional 3. He cannot match-up with D1 point guards. Yet, Tubby plays him - a lot.

What happened to the Puerto Rico rotation with Blake playing the back-up point role? That seemed to work much better than this...

Not totally disagreeing with what people have been saying

but it is worth noting that we're legitimately competing with the #2 team in the country on their own court. This is not as bad as a lot of people are making it seem.

Nobody is really saying this. It comes down to the fact that tubby has an odd rotation and it is keeping us from having legitimate chances to win these tougher games.

From now on, IF Maverick HAS to play, he should be playing the two guard and in the game to score. The only skill he possesses is making 3's, which is a huge need for this team. The kid is not at all ready to play point, and it is embarrassing to force him out there. And for some reason, he never gets pulled after his horrendous turnovers either. What is going on here?

And here's Ahanmisi in again with Hollins... Why can't the hoff swtich to the point for 2 minutes at a time and let other more talented players have the minutes. Armelin is far and away the more talented player than Ahanmisi yet he rides the pine. He's one kid that shows some desire to create on offense. Yes he makes mistakes but Ahanmisi has 3 TOs by my count so far and simply cannot keep up with OSUs athletes.

Armelin is a really, really good looking player.

Yet he plays sparingly......

4th year? Only in MN.

Why didnt Tubby recruit a point guard or two in the last couple years?

The older folks on this board will appreciate this: Tubby is Clem-like in his substitution patterns.

To me, it seems like you get yanked if you do something stupid or don't guard. It seems as if substitution almost never has anything to do with offense.

If you screw up, you get yanked. Offense be damned.

Actually, Clem's substitutions were very different. Clem would wait until a player got hot, then bench him. Time after time.

I will admit, the lack of ball movement in both Clem's and Tubby's offense (along with Monson's, as well) is striking.

As for the substitution policy, it is infuriating. I don't get it. With a chance to win, in a close game, why would you sub 3 newbies in at the same time. I'm all for getting young players and bench players playing time, but not all at once. grrrr.

Clem's offense wasn't great but it was poetry compared with this mess. But Clem -as I posted tended to groom go to guys who would take the ball and go with it and had the ability to do so. Think of the guys-Voshon Leonard, Willie Burton, Mel Newbern, Quincy Lewis and Bobby Jackson- those guys could all make a play on their own. Clem's squads liked to pound it inside just like Tubby but Clem seemed to be able to design more consistent ways to get the bigs the entry pass. And the ball often would get kicked back out to the wing.

i thought hollins was supposed to be a mature good shooting guard. Is he the next kevin payton?

While we are speaking of Clem, to me the trademark of Clem was player development:

Newbern came in as a scorer and Clem turned him into a point guard
Burton came in as a high school post player and became a great 3/4 man who could shoot the three and handle the ball on the perimeter.
Schick was baby soft and turned into a decent rebounder
Eric Harris was a terrible shooter that became a very good one
Walter Bond came in as a fatty and left as as muscleman
Miles Tarver and Richard Coffey couldn't make a layup and both became big assets

There were so many guys under Clem that just go so much better at things they couldn't do when they arrived. I doubt this was all Clem. I just have to believe he had a group of assistants that could train and develop guys. To me it's disappointing to see a terrific player like Al Nolen fail to learn how to shoot better by the time he's a senior. Same thing but different skills with Iverson and Sampson. Hoff and DJ are two guys who did improve noticably.

No. He's being put in some bad spots. Looks like he lacks confidence in whether he should shoot or not right now. He's got potential.

I think you should be the Gopher coach. You know more than any of them.

d-w-e-s.

Funny that before the season started you thought we should be expecting a top 3 Big Ten finish and 25+ wins.

That's not going to happen.

I don't even know what d.w.e.s. means but I'm sure it's another personal attack, since that's what you do best.

Dripping With Extreme Sarcasm. You'd be a great coach for any team, especially Minnesota.

The Gophers are missing 2 key players from the team that I expected to finish high in B10 and have 25 W at end of season.

To win with these players, Al has to log heavy minutes (once he is healthy) and get by his man into the lane. He doesn't finish well but he doesn't have to if he kicks it out or dumps it off low to RIII or TM. One of these three (Hoff, Chip or Hollins) has to become a serviceable backup PG a few minutes a game. If Chip has the handles he is the most likey because he can beat his man off of the dribble. Iverson has hands of stone so he will spell TM and RIII but don't dump it to him unless absolutely necessary. Just go in, play hard. good D and board. Mav is not ready to play at this level and will be gone at the end of the year. We have to have a good JC point guard come in next season to start and we need to somehow find a good HS PG to be the backup, play a little and learn to play in the Big 10. Is that something Hollins2 can provide or is he stricly a 2?
We have too many 2/3 type players and have a much greater need for a true PG than another 2/3 or a soft 6'9" player who likes to stay outside a shoot the 3.

Just my opinion so don't bash - just point out why you see the needs differently...

Agree with much of what you wrote. Disagree on the following.

Austin Hollins can not play PG. I have to assume Chip is not as good as Mav at PG or Tubby would play him (Tubby wants to win too). Hoff played 34 minutes, would have to play the entire game to cover PG also. Mav only played 9 minutes (some of the longest 9 minutes of my life as everything fell apart)

Mav is not ready, but he has improved a lot. I hope he sticks around as a backup.

Watching Andre Hollins video, I think he can play a scoring PG (which is fine because Gophers need a scorer). Could use another PG (use Devoe's scholarship).

Again, hope Mav stays - he can shoot, and can be a backup PG.

What an awful thread. I love comments like this... "Armelin is far and away the more talented player than Ahanmisi yet he rides the pine." Hmmm, maybe it's because our backup pg just left, leaving Mav as the only option at pg. Please don't try to tell me that Chip can play pg. Also, talent only takes you so far. Devoe is more "talented" than Nolen.

I said that. You are right, Armelin can't play the point but Hoffarber can. Who do you think can play the point better- Hoffarber or Maverick? I'll put my money on Hoff. So where does Hoff get his rest time? Both Hollins and Armelin are behind him. So you have the opportunity to spell Nolen with Hoff, bring Nolen back in and rest Hoff with Hollins or Armelin. Instead Tubby is bringing in Maverick with another frosh and playing them together. If you want to see Hollins, Armelin, Maverick and Iverson play really badly with no confidence, just put them all on the floor at once.

In the same way, I'd love to see Williams slide to the PF position on days when Sampson is looking lost. I think Tubby has enough interchangable parts that he can find ways to get his best players on the floor. This team should be desperate to develop another player who has a mindset to score ont he perimeter. Armelin has that confidence and that raw ability to make things happen. Not all of them will be good but I prefer a little proactive play rather than the standing around on the perimeter that we so often see.

But if you think Maverick is the way to go to improve this team- then fine- that's your opinion and maybe you are right. The kid has shown some ability to shoot and that is good (5 of 11 for the year from the 3pt line), but right now he's a turnover machine and a step slow.

Man, after reading this thread I get the feeling people are longing for the days of Clem. Has it gotten that bad?

I agree with the substitution takes 100% though. Hollins-Mav-Armelin puts way too much pressure on Iverson. Colton can't be the guy on offense. He needs to crash the boards and post up once in a while. For Colton to be counted-on for offense is insane.

My feelings exactly.
