Tubby on being fired at U: “They wanted a younger guy. That’s what it was."

I gotta agree, '09 was the best I've felt as a Gopher fan about a season in recent memory (the '05 Monson squad was pretty nice as well). Everything just looked like it was taking shape. That preseason media day in the '09-'10 season was the high point of the Tubby era.

The Tubby Smith era in a single sentence.

You are saying that Uk that is not in a good financial situation now is stupid to pay Calimari $5 million per season when he didn't even make NCAA last year. You all need to stop this as a tool for your arguments. All of the coaches are overpaid.

Tubby as a victim does not float.

We were grateful enough to pay him millions of dollars for his efforts. I believe that's how the relationship works. Sorry, but he didn't earn a statue.

This. He did much worse than he was being paid. He did much better than the previous coach. He got rich, left the Gopher bball program in better shape than when he arrived. Push. Definitely no statue necessary.

I think we would have gotten more effort out of Wooden the last couple of years even though no longer of this world

Tubby must be quite a talented coach if he can make a run to the NIT title game with a gimped squad and notch us our first tournament win in 20+ years without even trying.

Can't control what you see through your rose colored glasses. "Tubby was good somewhere else so we are lucky to have him"

Hello, Nebraska?????? Should they have won that game?

Considering Nebraska has the same number of conference wins as OSU, Indiana, and Purdue; has beaten OSU and Indiana; took Michigan to wire; and we were without our best player, the loss to the Huskers wasn't nearly as disastrous as the doozies that occurred over the previous two years. The loss was disappointing perhaps, but not on the same level as Tubby's. Now if this team lays down against struggling teams like Illinois and Penn St down the line, then you would have a case.

You need to realize that there are no gimmees in the B1G this year, so each and every game is challenging for every team.

Illinois, Penn St, and Northwestern appear to have glaring weaknesses that play into the Gophers strengths. I can't see us losing these games if we play to our capabilities.

Always the big IF. That is also true for every B1G game this year. What I am trying to say is, on any given day/night, the B1G is open to upsets in any game. That is why we play the games.

I have faith that Pitino will have this team prepared every single game to play their best and he wouldn't put up with anyone who didn't. Honestly, we should start expecting this team to start having a winning mentality like the Clem Haskins teams in the 90's, minus the shenanigans of course.

Tubby is always the victim and always takes the low road.

It would be fantastic to see Pitino get two road wins in the conference and finish in the top five this season. His first season in the conference would then be better than anything Tubby accomplished in the conference for us.

what Tubby should of said is "Minnesota wanted a coach that didn't have his team peak in Mid November, so they went a different route'

IMO the perception that Tubby was not developing his players was his biggest problem. That Rodney arrived and departed virtually the same player was damning. These young men want a coach who will develop their skills to take it to the next level, and take that aspiration seriously. Things were going to get uglier here quickly.

Also, the idea that UK is 'over' their issues w/Tubby is funny. No.

I imagine there is more than a few fans who blame Tubby for last season at UK.

Shenanigans, never. ;)

Tubby appeared to get complacent, similar to Mason towards the end of his tenure. A change in leadership can be energizing. In business, leaders are changed out all of the time to get a fresh perspective. It takes a special leader to not wear out their welcome after 6 years and sports entities just like business are always trying to find one.
