Tubby on being fired at U: “They wanted a younger guy. That’s what it was."

Does Tubby realize that if Pitino wins one more road game this season that Pitino will have more road Big Ten wins this season than Tubby's best season at Minnesota?

only one question?

no tubby, we wanted the following:

more player development
a coach that showed passion on the sidelines more than once every few games
a staff that has a reputation for recruiting hard
a coach that drew up out of bounds plays other than chucking the ball to half court
a coach that was willing to switch up defenses
a coach who's teams got better as seasons went on
a coach who didn't lose players to transfer only to see them flourish in new systems
a coach who talked about what the u has, not what the u lacks

pitino may not have all of these, but he's already shown to have a lot

What exactly has Richard shown that you and some others think that he is a better replacement for Tubby? Wins over OSU and UW? Some other far less talented teams have done it this season too.

Defamation.

Character revealed. Again.

Those at Texas Tech will soon understand if they don't already. In the top 10% of the nation's slowest adjusted tempo teams due to an exceptionally slow offense. Yes, his up-tempo, Run N Gun brand of basketball has already arrived in Lubbock.

Probably felt good for Tubby to lash out. Hoping for 12 wins this year and your best player is a senior. Gonna be UGLY down there.

Good Lord GW, you are the least intelligent poster in here after me , Dr. Don and OSU fan. Give it a rest. People in TT for the most part are very happy with Tubby just like people in EU with Trevor. Do you go there and post stuff against Trevor or you have finally let it go? Let it go, you can't always be right. Sometimes we all can be wrong.

I guess that depends on what you consider Tubby's best season. I'd argue Season 2, even though the Gophers didn't win a NCAA tourney game that season. ... neutral-site win vs. eventual #1 overall tournament seed Louisville, 9-9 in Big Ten (a 10th conference win @ BTT), a sweep of Wisconsin (thank you Lawrence Westrbrook), and the intangible of people being legitimately excited about the potential of the program under Tubby.

Tubby's Big Ten road records while @ Minnesota:
2007-08: 3-6
2008-09: 3-6 (NCAA)
2009-10: 3-6 (NCAA)
2010-11: 2-7
2011-12: 3-6
2012-13: 1-8 (NCAA win)

I was never a public basher of Tubby Smith. But as time went on, as has been mentioned ad nauseum, our Gophers stagnated almost every year under Coach Smith. It became apparent to me that a change was needed but I never clamored for it.

It is now water over the dam, and I wish Coach Smith good luck at Tech, but I wish Coach Pitino better luck at Minnesota.

GO GOPHERS!!!

We are a select group, aren't we?

Which of the following statements do you disagree with?
1) Last year was Tubby's best season at Minnesota
2) Last year, Tubby had 1 Big Ten road win
3) So far this year, Pitino has 1 Big Ten road win
4) If Pitino wins one more road game this season, he will have 2 Big Ten road wins
5) 2>1

I think that Gopherguy's metric of number of Big Ten road wins is an odd stat to focus on. However, I don't see which part of his statement is inaccurate.

We needed a coach who gave a $h!t about beating teams we had no business losing to, gave credit where it was due for the team's success, and placed blame where it was due when the team stunk up the place. If John Wooden still has a desire to coach and wanted to come here and change this program, I think Gopher fans would be more than happy with that. Tubby should be thrilled that he can utilize that "I just want to collect a paycheck" attitude at a school that focuses 99% of its energy on football.

Hello, Nebraska?????? Should they have won that game?

I think #1 is the debatable part. Depends on how you determine best season.

Most success in the NCAA, yes. Best season...? I think I'm with SS on that. Westbrook's 9 points in OT at Wisconsin is one of my most cherished MN basketball memories.

Sure we are:)

What gets me crazy is how fans can be so ungrateful. Even SS is saying thanks for Westbrook not Tubby for sweeping UW. I have been reading the comments here all season long. They have been very biased as always. When the Gophers lose, it was the players' fault. Any time the Gophers won as ugly as it may have been, it was good coaching. Give me a break. Like I have said before, even people in KY have let it go and call the Tubby era good old days.

#1 is debatable, but Dpod has spent a lot of time reminding us that we fired Tubby after the best season at Minnesota in over 20 years, so I am assuming that is not the part he is disputing.

Ah, I forgot about that.

Relax RT, that was not a shot at Tubby. I put the Westbrook reference in there because those Wisconsin games are the ones he's most remembered for, especially the one in Madtown.

Hello, Nebraska?????? Should they have won that game?

Should Indiana have beaten them in Lincoln last night? Should Ohio State have beaten them in Lincoln 10 days earlier? Should Miami Fla. have beaten them in Lincoln in December? Should #10 Michigan be grateful for a one point win in Lincoln?

Tubby had a couple years where he won three big ten road games and technically last year wasn't his best year in conference, he had a couple 9-9 teams, although I'd say last year was the most disappointing IMO

We were grateful enough to pay him millions of dollars for his efforts. I believe that's how the relationship works. Sorry, but he didn't earn a statue.

I think we would have gotten more effort out of Wooden the last couple of years even though no longer of this world

I gotta agree, '09 was the best I've felt as a Gopher fan about a season in recent memory (the '05 Monson squad was pretty nice as well). Everything just looked like it was taking shape. That preseason media day in the '09-'10 season was the high point of the Tubby era.

Sid would have ended up calling him "a stiff".

Is this an Onion article or for real? I'd love to dig this article out in a few years.

I've seen a few comments like this out of Dallas before, though. I seriously don't think they pay much attention to basketball there, and the Tubby "name brand" built in his early years at Kentucky is all they pay attention to. 99% of focus in TX is on football.

This is very true. Tubby is also double dipping in pay the next few years, so no one should feel too sorry for him. He gets to enjoy his money in one of the remotest cities in the continental USA. He also gets to keep Saul employed a few more years, so Mrs. Smith is probably happy too. TT doesn't care one bit about basketball, the only reason people buy tickets is so they get points towards better football parking spaces. He may just win 20 games there and I'd be happy for him, the Big XII is less deep since Missouri and Texas A&M left and they got West Virginia & TCU in their place.

You are saying that Uk that is not in a good financial situation now is stupid to pay Calimari $5 million per season when he didn't even make NCAA last year. You all need to stop this as a tool for your arguments. All of the coaches are overpaid.
