Trevor issue, dealt with internally

A DUI is a troubling thing. Scher made a good point about how most "normal" college kids good go and engage in some illegal but mostly harmless activity without anyone noticing, whereas a basketball star cannot. But I wouldn't put a DUI into the same category of "boys being boys". A little recreational marijuana, and the player and the team get some egg on their face and it ends there. With mixing alcohol and driving, we are lucky when the embarassment is the worst of it. Mbakwe could have killed or seriously injured an innocent person. He really needs to grow up.

Regarding the Miami case, he was found guilty in February of this year. The U didn't seem to bat an eye over it, so you'd think they won't care much about a DUI. In addition to other punishments (including some not being directly handed down by the FL courts - such as not being able to vote in MN as a "convicted felon" per the state statutes), there was a probation period that goes into spring of 2013. The result is that Mbakwe must answer to the probation violation and they'll probably set a date for a probation violation hearing for later this fall/winter on Wednesday of this coming week. He could face further punishment related to him being found guilty of the Florida assault. From a legal standpoint, this is what I'd be most concerned about ...

I recall a full season during which Trevor sat on the bench in street clothes, suspended. Or am I remembering a different Miami case?

Agreed. By all accounts Trevor Mbakwe is a very smart, kind, polite, fun individual and I do not doubt that one word of that is untrue. That said, he makes some dumb decions and puts himself in some terrible situations and he needs to realize that as a basketball player and potential NBA draft pick, the results of those choices are more severe. Completely agree on your thoughts about how serious a DUI is too, it is too bad that many college kids do actually do this with no punishment or serious results, and I think it is more common than many would like to admit, but the risk is so high regardless of who you are that it is stupid to do and as a public figure you need to understand and know that very well.

Heck, Kobe Bryant is a 34 year old man and found himself all over TMZ, the news, everywhere for having a photo leak of him sitting on a bench next to two fully clothed females with his shirt off. A normal person may only get in trouble from their wife for that, but an NBA player is plastered all over the news. Trevor needs to understand, accept, and handle that if this is the profession he wishes to pursue.

You're remembering their initial stance. They later let him play while the case was unresolved and, what I had said in this thread, is that they didn't bat an eye over him being found guilty of the offense in February of this year.

Nadine-

Trevor on his #DUI: it's something that happened earlier this summer, it's been addressed internally by the team. #gophers

@GophersNow

Mbakwe: "It's something that happened earlier in summer time. Coach has been well aware of it and it's something we're handling internally."

I give GW credit. If he knew about this in july. He gave Tubby 5 months to come clean and he never did. DUI is a pretty serious transgression. We saw this summer with Coach Bigler the devastation it can cause.

We can say all we want what a great guy someone is but in the end, it's about actions and not words. Friendly tweets and shoutouts mean nothing. Walk the walk.

Not a smart move by Trevor, obviously, but I have little doubt GW got some twisted personal glee posting this information, at this specific & calculated time.

I'm sure George Dohrmann would be proud of GW's timing on this one. As they say...Hell hath no fury etc.

I don't think he really has to "come clean." He found out about the incident and he dealt with it. I don't think it's his responsibility to go to the media and say, "Hey, one of my players screwed up and I want you to make sure everyone knows."

I don't believe one word of this.

I agree that the timing of the post is suspect, but Mbakwe is lucky that he didn't get booted off of the team. When you are on probabation, I would assume that you should try to be more Catholic than the pope. The stalking thing is a bit disconcerting, I have to say.

Regardless of when information was reported or whatever, trouble seems to follow Trevor Mbakwe around. It's not a coincidence. I have a hard time rooting for guys who can't follow some of society's simpler rules.

+1
Mbakwe is an idiot, and I would no issue if he has played his last game as a Gopher, but the timing of this is also ridiculous. What makes him try and "break" the news tonight? Absolute a-hole and no friend to this basketball team.

I think you guys are entirely too hard on GW. He reports facts with about a 2% accuracy, which is pretty good in this day and age of the internet.

Dr. Don, you make your posts with 2% sobriety, so what is the issue?

Did a simple Mbakwe twitter search and GW is insisting everyone tell his side of the story, he must be pulling the little hair he has left out as everyone ignores him on twitter;

Tweets to FSN, Strib, PIP, ESPN trying them to blow this out of proportion for his twisted agenda.

@adammiller67 @ameliarayno Adam - what specifically are you referring to? I talked to the Miami office of the state attorney today.

@FSNtylermason One thing you're missing - has court in Miami on Weds for probation violation (was found guilty of felony assault in Feb)

More incorrect info on FL. Due in court Weds. RT @ESPNAndyKatz: Medcalf-- Source: Smith reprimanded Mbakwe 'internally' http://espn.go.com/mens-college-bas...y-smith-internally-offseason-according-source

@OtisRedding101 @DarrenWolfson We shall see. I'm not convinced Minnesota understands the status of the Florida felony case.

Based on comments coming from Tubby, not sure he realizes #Gophers Mbakwe is on probation in FL & due in Miami court this Weds. #NotGood

Strib & PP early articles miss the biggest issue - #Gophers Mbakwe is also on probation for felony assault in FL. Due in Miami court on Weds

***Can you say crazy? Give it up GW, let it play out! You are the only person pushing this.

Wow...this is obsessive.

I also would have no problem with Mbakwe being done at the U, he has had enough chances. However, this obsession with him is a bit sickening. This is one of the most bizarre episodes on Gopherhole.

GW certainly has some annoying tendencies on here, but he provides better analysis, statistics, facts, and inside info than most people on here (and our media). I would miss all of that more than I'd enjoy not having some of the more irritating posts.

It's nothing short of embarrassing that he's allowed to post (let alone "contribute") on this site. I don't know what kind of dirt he has on the owner(s) of the site, but they don't seem to care that he's about as welcome here as anal cancer.

Regarding the Miami case, he was found guilty in February of this year.

Man, GopherHole better be careful using GW for information -- his statement isn't accurate at all.

Look at the Miami Dade criminal filings website. It shows that an adjudication of guilt has been withheld pending probation with special conditions. He was NOT found guilty of a felony. That is wholly untrue.

Why is this clown still on the team? If this was an IA or WI player, Holers would be up in arms the kid was still on their squad.

Really? During this time of the year, the football side is much busier than this BBall side, yet a thread about "Micah Hyde, a senior cornerback for the Iowa Hawkeyes, was arrested Saturday morning for public intoxication and interference with official acts." (Link started 10-7-2012) and the story also involved "Sophomore tight end Ray Hamilton was ticketed Saturday morning for being underaged and in a bar after 10 p.m., and junior offensive lineman Drew Clark was arrested Friday for public intoxication." None of those players are losing any practice time or playing time, and that thread garnered a total of 9 comments.

Incomplete data. Need more information on their track records leading up to the arrests.

You can't have adjudication withheld unless you are found guilty. He was found guilty but not convicted.

GW simply doesn't understand the significance of the withheld adjudication relating to the Miami matter. In fairness to him, i doubt many non lawyers would.

Trevor is not a felon. The withholding of adjudication prevented that. MN statutes only prevented convicted felons from voting, which Trevor is not.

Search back through the other 300 page thread on this issue. Lots of information there.

He was "found guilty" based on a plea. The withholding of adjudication keeps him from being a felon.

'guilty' + 'felony assault' are G-dubs go to buzz words. Surprized he is hiding from Tubtastic.

I can appreciate that you find the timing of this news odd, but I assure you I didn't plan this out at all. That would be sickening if I had, but in all honesty I didn't.

Right. It happened 3 months ago. Was settled a month ago. And you just happened to 'stumble upon' this 3 hours before Gopher media day so the local press had just enough time to verify and work into a froth. Oh and the same thing just happened to happen last year. Wow.

If anyone believes this, please PM me about a great real estate opportunity I have. Seriously.
