Trent Lockett granted release to be "closer to home" UPDATED (4/10): Marq Leading

What would be closer to "home" than the U of MN? This could be a huge transfer if he chose the Gophers.

However, I want to note that while I'd be excited if he came here, it's definitely under horrific circumstances (sounds like his mom's cancer has gotten much worse recently).

Trent Lockett Transfering..

Trent Locket is transfering via Jeff Goodman of CBSSports due to his mom being sick, obviously very said news for him and his family first of all but.. Where do you guys think he heads? Iowa? Minnesota?

That's unfortunate for him. If he chose to transfer to the Gophers, i'm sure he can get a waiver so he doesn't have to sit out a year.

I was excited until I read the last part. Hate hearing news like that. Seriously hope she gets better. Would love to have him as a Gopher obviously, but wish it was due to different circumstances.

If he does decide to come to the Gophers, I'd obviously welcome him with open arms. Perhaps a year off from the grind wouldn't be the worst thing for him though, considering the circumstances.

Thoughts and prayers out to his mother and family, hope that she can manage the cancer as best she can, or of course hopefully get completely better.

He has not redshirted to my knowledge so even if he didn't get a waiver he could, worst case scenario, sit a year and play. Although I'm sure he could give another shot in the arm to this Gopher team.

Edit:

Did a little more digging and apparently he is on track to graduate in 3 years. Now this is where I should have the NCAA compliance office on speed dial but I'll settle for any gurus we have on GH. If he does graduate in 3 years, since he has not yet spent a RS or 4th year, could he hypothetically enroll in a 2 year graduate program and play both years? Again this is all assuming he transfers to the U.

This is certainly horrible news for Trent and his family, but it could end up being a great get for the Gophers if they can pick him up.

I read an article that said he is graduating after 3 years at ASU which would allow him to play immediately even if they don't give him a waiver (although this seems similar to the Paul Carter situation and he will probably get a waiver.)

Was he in the same class at Hopkins as Royce White? I wonder what the odds are that he heads down to Ames, IA and becomes one of a very long line of solid transfers to play for Hoiberg there.

Definitely best wishes to the Lockett family.

Does Minnesota have a scholarship available for next season? If Trevor is not back and there are no unexpected departures, wouldn't adding Ellenson and Buggs take the scholarship total to 13? My apologies, as I don't recall the numbers very well. I know UW liked Lockett a lot out of HS and offered him, and the Badgers do have an opening for next season.

You would be correct about the scholarship situation here. We have 0 open scholarships as of right now.

My guess, 100% guess, is Tubby has possibly known about this (maybe via his family reaching out?) and this could explain why Chip is not seeing minutes as he could be "encouraged" to transfer to make room for Lockett.

My theory is no one really expects Trev back, were that to happen, though, I could see Ingram as an unfortunate casualty as they'd both be seniors and with all due respect to Ingram, Trevor is better.

Right now we have zero. Next year we will have 13. Will be interesting who Tubby chooses to sign with them.

Scholarships are only guaranteed for one year, not four.

Not correct.

Not correct.
Right now we have 12 scholarship players, losing 2 and bring 2 in. Yes I know that they are only guaranteed for one year, but if we were to keep all players on the team then we could not take another player. I definitely understand the situation, I've been talking about who would lose their scholarship if Trevor were to come back for awhile.

Mav & Chip most likley to go

I could see Ingram as an unfortunate casualty as they'd both be seniors and with all due respect to Ingram, Trevor is better.

Even if Trevor gets a sixth year we don't know if he will be 100% or ready to go when the season starts, could be a month or two into the season before he is ready. Marcus said he has been coming on in practice and this game finally showed his value and a preview of what he could bring in his senior season.

Prayers go out to the Lockett family. Would be huge if he transferred in, Trevor and Trent are game changers.

Hope his mom ends up alright.

Have to imagine Mav and Chip would be the ones gone if we got Lockett and Trevor returned. How sick would this roster look?

PG: Andre Hollins, Julian Welch
SG: Trent Lockett, Joe Coleman, Wally Ellenson
SF: Austin Hollins, Oto Osenieks, Charles Buggs
PF: Rodney Williams, Mo Walker, Andre Ingram
C: Trevor Mbakwe, Elliot Eliason

Sure we don't have a 3rd scholarship PG, but I'd still roll with that team all day long.

For those unfamiliar with Lockett, he played at Hopkins (I assume he has some connection to Joe then as well) and was a pretty highly regarded recruit as a rivals 4 star.

Not sure how "close to home" is necessary, but he would have been a teammate of Royce's in high school making ISU a possible destination. IMO, Gophers make the most sense and I hope he chooses to play here and be as close as possible to his mother and also to really help our team.

No matter how it ends though, I wish the best for Trent and his entire family and hoping for the best first and foremost with his mothers health and his success. This can't be an easy time for anyone.

Tweet from Marcus:

"Don't think Lockett ends up here. Wouldn't be good fit. Too many players at his position. Closer to home, doesn't mean home."

Go Gophers!!

Agreed 110%. That is an incredible line up. 3 seniors, a junior, and a sophomore starting to create an experienced team and four 4-star recruits and a 3-star?!?! Yes please!!!

I disagree, but we will see what happens. I think, depending on what Tubby promised him, Ellenson could red shirt for Lockett to gain minutes, Chip would have to transfer, and then Joe and Welch back up the 3-guard line up. Makes sense to me anyways.

Madtown's roster could be a top 5 in the B1G. Lockett has to be coming here because Iowa St is unreasonably far from Mpls. Unless he is going to Mankato or St. Cloud lol

However, closeER to home could be anywhere closer than ASU. Who knows.

At first I didn't see how he would fit as a Gopher but with a three guard lineup he could play sf with the Hollins's at the other guard position. The fact that he only has one year of eligibility makes it tougher though.
