I just find it interesting that some people on this site are complaining that our transfers are coming from non power conferences. Last year we had three guys transfer in....

Both Gach from Utah (Pac 12)

Liam Robbins from Drake (Missouri Valley)

Brandon Johnson from Western Michigan (MAC)

Arguably, Johnson and Robbins were two of our best three players from last year, even though they transferred in from small conferences. The biggest losses most people feel we have had are the two guys who transferred in from smaller, non P5 conferences. Kind of ironic, isn't it? Gach, who came from the Pac 12, many people on here at least, wouldn't seem to care if he left or not. Personally, I think Gach is going to have a pretty good year next year.

The point is I don't really see this huge drop off from last years team. Everyone we lost is more than replaceable....including Marcus Carr. Was I hoping we would get the two guys from Texas A&M...yeah definitely. But I'm still excited for the additions we've made and looking forward to the roster being filled out this spring and summer. I think we will be better than most people on this board believe we will be.

Based on what we know now—what would you predict the conference record to be? Let’s assume all 20 games are played.
 

2 out of the 3 transfers were from mid-major. One of those (Robbins) was one of the highest rated transfers available. Not even close to going into a season where potentially 10 spots on the roster are filled by mid-major transfers. For every Robbins/Johnson there is a Demir/Stull. We will be fortunate if 50% of our transfers have production that is equal to what Robbins/Johnson gave last season.

There is going to be a huge drop in talent. That said, maybe some of the gap will be made up with remaining signings this spring. Perhaps some of it will be taken care of it by better depth. But if we are to win even 6 or more Big Ten games it will mean that Johnson has coached the team to better teamwork and defense.

I'm waiting until the roster is complete. We need a Center, I don't see small ball working well in the B1G

I am wishing for a rerun of the ARob, Lawson, Coleman, Hagen, Grier season. That was a team that I thought before the season couldn't win 10 games. But they had a catalyst in juco transfer Grier and a bunch of guys who worked together to get more out of the team than the individual talent would ever have made one forecast.

Can we wait to see who is on our team next year? I think 6-8 is reasonable....without knowing our B1G schedule.

Stull was surprisingly terrible possibly because in part because he appeared out-of-shape. Demir wasn't terrible but he was marginal. Still, he was a better option as a starting forward in the 2020 team than Michael Hurt or Omersa would have been in his absence and he only took up a scholarship for one year. The comparison shouldn't be between those transfers and superior or even average Big Ten players; the comparison should be between those transfers and who would have played in their place on this team.

Other than the four mentioned previously (Johnson, Robbins, Demir, and Stull), here are (from memory) Pitino's other mid-major (or lower) transfers during his tenure here in chronological order:

Joey King: miscast as a power forward but a fine shooter and a serviceable player

Malik Smith: streaky player but definitely helped Pitino's first team

DeAndre Mathieu, juco: big impact

Carlos Morris, juco: not a great player but not so bad in his first season; kicked off the team in his second season

Zach Lofton: kicked off the team preseason but had a really good college career elsewhere

Reggie Lynch: high impact player

Akeem Springs: good player who made a definite impact in his one year

On the whole, those mid-major transfers did fair to very well and better than a multiple players we could mention who were recruited from the high school/prep ranks.

Pitino's P6 transfers were: Fitzgerald, Stockman, Carr, and Gach. Fitzgerald was a sort of a bust presumably in part because of health issues and a long period of inactivity. Carr was a major impact player. Stockman was just fine as a backup center. I still have faith in Gach to have a decent season next year.

I think thats pretty fair. There are some bad big ten teams and the Gophers seem to find ways to beat a couple good ones even in really bad seasons. I guess thats the challenge of the B1G

Also, still confused as to how you can say you don’t see a huge drop off from last years team but then when asked for a prediction you want to wait to see who is on the team 🤷🏼‍♂️

between Carr, Robbins, Gabe, and Johnson we lost our top 4 players. We have added zero guys as good as the top 2 of those 4.

that roster got 13th


I do predict we will do no worse than 14th though.


so huge drop off in talent. Probably pretty similar result. I think it might be an uglier 6-14.
 

I could be wrong - but I am hoping that the Gophers wind up with a team that probably does not have as much star power as last year, but also does not have such a huge drop-off from the starters to the bench.

I could see a team where nobody scores a ton of points, but everybody scores a few points.

and I would take that over last year's unbalanced roster where Carr might put up 30, but only 1 or 2 other guys were in double figures.

again, it all depends on how they fill out the roster - but - I could see a situation where the top 3 or 4 players are not as good as the top 3 or 4 from last year, but players 6-7-8-9 are better than their counterparts from last season. more production from the back end of the roster will at least partially offset any loss in production from the front end.

Carr was gone after last year no matter what....and if was nearly as good as some people think he was they wouldn't have finished 13th in the B1G. He didn't do anything to make anyone else on the team better and he was an average defensive player at best. You will probably have to search to ever see him play basketball again, because he won't be playing in the NBA.

The gophers finished 13th last year because nobody on the team could shoot, our coach did a terrible job of developing players on offense and defense, no offensive or defensive identity, and because 2 of our starters got hurt and missed half the Big Ten season. It wasn't because Marcus Carr was bad.

I never said Marcus Carr was bad, he's a very good offensive player....I said he was an average defensive player at best and he didn't do anything to make anyone on the team better. They were an awful team to watch last year.

Totally agree...dumpster fire last year. However, Some Guy said it. We have gotten 0 transfers who are at Marcus Carr or Liam Robbin's level. So to be as good as we were last year could be tough. That puts as back at dumpster fire levels again as far as talent goes. Now, we have different coaching so maybe we get more production due to building identity and development.
 

I would temper any record predictions with the point that almost all players on this roster will be new to each other. It takes time for players to be able to play well together and play as a team, as well as players even figuring out what their role is going to be. Add in BJ being new to running the show, and it could be slow going this year. Coach K and Coach Cal load up on basically a new roster each year, but they have 5* talent, as well as run a well-oiled machine that you can plug-and-play players into.

Still don't know how anyone can definitely say right now that we are going to see a huge drop off in talent next year. The guys coming in were all top players on their old teams, and the bar for being better than last season is pretty low.

The 20-21 team had some decent pieces but they played terrible as a team. On a purely individual basis we might not have anyone as good as Carr but if we have a team that can function together we could still see better results even without the star power.

It really didn't become a dumpster fire until Robbins and Gabe got injured. At the point where we were 4-4 in the Big Ten and in the top 25 it was a pretty well respected squad with a bunch of wins against ranked teams (5 I think).

True, but based on how the tournament played out I think some of those ranked teams were not quite as good as people thought they were at the time. Still, the team was looking pretty good early before the wheels just totally fell off....

So easy to forget those things when the team goes winless in February
