Transfer portal

Portal just officially opened today. Not going to see guys from the playoff teams leaving and a lot of others will wait until after their teams bowl game. I am sure it will be the same level of crazy or more, especially with the 105 roster limit.
I don’t think guys care that much if they are in the playoffs if they aren’t playing much.

Because of the NIL money Drake is getting, I doubt the portal QB will be here for anything but as an injury backup. He'll be nowhere near the caliber of a Brosmer. I do believe it's Drake's job to lose.
Does anyone really have any idea how much NIL Drake is getting or how much is available?

There’s a reason why quarterbacks in the NFL make $30- 50 million and running backs and cornerbacks, et al make a fraction of that. The position is different than any other and I do think it takes potentially more kid gloves and nuance than managing the other positions. If they want to bring in some squid to be a back up and he’s clearly at a back up level I think that’s fine otherwise I’d rather recruit and develop kids within the program to play the position; with the portal there in case of emergencies like last year. I’ll bet that this is what PJ is doing this year not looking for somebody to promise the starting job too like he did with Brosmer— and good that he did Max was a lot of fun and a big need.
But the NFL doesn't give $30-$50 to 5th round draft picks who haven't played a snap of professional football. With the record of recruiting and developing QBs here, I'd much rather roll with a guy that's shown he can actually play college football. It's not like KOC is our coach.

There’s no point in purposely bringing in a backup level qb unless we get desperate. It shouldn’t be that difficult to land someone that can at least push Lindsey for the starting role.

Do we know how much he's getting though?

Saw on ESPN that Coach Dillingham, aka Dilly, said that players can go into the portal and still play in the bowl game, as long as they stay committed to to he program through the bowl game.

Yes, there was a team a couple of years ago (Florida I think) that had a number of players playing in the game who were also in the portal. The announcers mentioned it a number of times in the game.

Let's get him

Have not paid much attention to Pavia's suit but that feels like a really flimsy reason for requesting another year of eligibility. But why not I guess, he doesn't really have NFL prospects so may as well try and cash in now.
Looks like at least temporarily Pavia has won and will get another year of eligibility. Essentially if this stands anyone that played junior college football can make a case for deserving additional eligibility.

The next big one to fall is going to be in season transfers.....someone is going to sue in order to do it and based on the way the NCAA is getting crushed in the courts they will probably win.

Would be any sport. Go to JC and it may not count against your 4 years.

I think this ruling if it stands will have a major effect on the college game. This could be construed as the court saying that any eligibility limits impinge upon the right of a player to earn money.

They could, but still wouldn't be eligible to play in the middle of a semester. No way a player could win that case. If they did, then shut it down completely - any semblance of being a "college" football program would be gone.

At this point it seems like anytime a player challenges an existing rule they win. Someone is going to try and find a way to transfer in season with immediate eligibility it is only a matter of time.

This is all speedrunning to the place I've thought it would end up for a couple years. "College" football ending eligibility limits and ending up an existential threat to the NFL.

I get what you're saying but I can't see any scenario where the NFL is in danger. They've had so many decades to establish a legitimate, quality product with consistent rules and guidelines. From the ownership down, everyone plays by the rules and gets a really nice chunk of the pie. Cfb is too big with too many moving parts and people whose self interests/desire to get rich quick (whether it's at the admin level or the player level) are number one. It'll grow too fast and eat itself because it'll go almost entirely unregulated as we see it developing right now.

I agree that college football is unlikely to ever be a true threat to the NFL. The current models in college football are unsustainable and without some regulation/sanity it will be far more likely to just implode then to become a true competitor with the NFL because most schools can't afford to pay the kind of money that is being thrown around in college football.

More likely we see the top end schools break free of the NCAA and form their own league of some kind. Essentially become semi-pro football or something like that. Whole thing is a massive clusterf*&k right now.

I never thought of that angle, but--and I am totally spitballing here--the NIL could become a quasi-Green Bay Packer model of franchise ownership at the college level that could allow the big hitters to exit the NCAA and start their own gig. Although there's currenty a saturation of football on television, I guess there is always room for more (and this bunch wouldn't have any problem getting a rich payday from ESPN and the networks). I don't know if that's pro football per se, but it gets mightly close.

Spot on, in my book.

I'm not so sure some of the top schools can remain the "top" anymore under the current crazy model. For example, I've heard rumblings that Alabama doesn't have the funding potential as some other SEC schools. The dynamics could change. You might see schools like SMU with rich boosters in a huge rich metro area spring up.

At this point anything is possible. All we know for sure if that this current insanity is not sustainable long term. Hopefully the revenue sharing that goes into place will help, but the whole thing is a mess.

This could be Minnesotas best chance at a Natty along with many other schools. Might not happen this year, but a decade from now if we get that one big booster it can change everything. NIL now can make that happen along with transfer portal.
