Am I the only who thinks PJ should stay away from a QB in the transfer portal and go with what he has on the roster. I know the current current QB roster is inexperienced but there seems to be some potential in Drake Lindsey and this Jackson Kollock kid they just signed.

Probably

Good players aren’t scared of competition, unless they’re entitled/spoiled in my experience; rather they relish the opportunity to compete/win

I think it'd be suicidal to just give the job to Lindsey. Feel like an experienced portal QB is a must

Are you willing to tolerate a losing season to find out?

Yes Kollock is a hs kid and Lindsey has not taken snaps. There should always be competition at QB. Some guys crumble under pressure

Potential doesn't always translate to wins. Kaliakmanis had loads of potential, let a competition decide.

100% you bring in a QB. In this era of guarantees and such, hard to say who is willing to do that though for any transfer looking at our roster coupled with that we were ranked 31st in terms of pass/run split will likely be enticing for some qbs. You don't turn down a proven commodity if you can get one for potential of Lindsay (who has looked good). For all intents and purposes Lindsay must be good with competing if PJ said he's bringing someone in and if Lindsay loses a competition and chooses to transfer, PJ made the right call because in the portal era, every year is a win now year when you're in a P4 conference.

It more would be "who" you're bringing in. if its some journeyman who has never played and is now a senior, then that's dumb. but if it's someone who's shown they can do it, even if they're a senior, yes you absolutely bring them in

I think almost every year you should at least take a look. On the off chance there's another Brosmer out there, you make an offer. No reason to just gift wrap Lindsey the job.
I never said gift wrap Lindsey the job. What's the point of recruiting any QB if your not going to develop one as a starter. If you don't have the confidence in those recruits why offer them a scholarship. Reality is if you don't play these guys they'll will hit the portal as well.

I Never said to give anyone the job. If your not going to develop a starting QB you recruit then why even bother recruiting one in the first place. Anyone who thinks these kids are going to sit year after year are delusional.

If Lindsey doesn’t want to compete for the job he can leave, but he’s going to have to compete anywhere he goes, so I’m not sure what the point of that would be.

Just so I understand, you’d rather play Lindsey over a better option out of fear that Lindsey will leave?

I don't understand your point. You say don't gift wrap the job for Lindsey, but if you don't bring in an experienced QB, aren't you just doing that? You're contradicting yourself.

What I'm saying is if your not going to develop a player you recruit why recruit him in the first place?

No I'm not contradicting myself. My point is if you recruit the kid but aren't willing to develop him into a starter why recruit him in the first place. Plus who knows maybe this kid from California is a star in the making.

I would say we are developing our recruits, the question is will our recruits be happy developing when they aren't playing. If you're not ready, you're not ready. If you are, you are. We don't have the luxury of playing a QB that still needs major development. So if Lindsey still needs a lot of development, he probably won't win the job and will have to develop in practice or transfer. His choice. If he doesn't need much development and can win the starting gig against stiff competition, good for him.

Well the only way he's going to develop is if he plays.
I really don't get the point you're trying to make. He'll play when he's ready, here or somewhere else. It sounds like you're suggesting that redshirt freshmen QBs across the country need to be starting because they'll never get better if they don't.

So, in reality, you don't want anybody else's opinion as you asked in start of thread. A dozen people have told you why you bring in another QB, but your staying with your initial thought, which is fine. Why ask then?
I would add one thing. Nobody is saying you aren't or won't develop Lindsey. It's just that Fleck's job is to win as many games as possible and if Dan Marino wants to come here, you take him.

I don't really know how to explain it any clearer than the way I have. You get better at playing the game by actually playing the game, it's a pretty simple concept. There's always going to be growing pains with young players especially at the QB position. Teams no longer have the option to bring a player along slowly. The days of guys playing 2nd and 3rd string for 3-4 years are gone with the transfer portal.
There's no pressure for the Gophers to compete for a Big 10 title let alone a spot in the CFB playoffs so why not develop a QB that might possibly do that.

I thought Drake would be more comparable to Phillip Rivers due to size but Dan Marino will do. Honestly the qb is not the problem right now it's the receivers losing Jackson and Spencer. Unless Taylor and Geers can carry the load at the skill position it doesn't matter who lines up at center unless you find someone in the portal.

Got it. Bench all of our seniors, start all of our freshmen so they can develop. Then the year after, bench all of the freshmen that played the year before for new freshmen coming in. Sounds like a recipe for success.

Develop for what? A 7-5 finish in 2027?

I ask because i understand how a conversation works. It's alright to disagree, If you don't like a different opinion then don't respond.
