tOSU 4th String QB, Ewers, Siged $1.4M NIL Deal!

No chance this is for real.

The contract he signed is with a company that would apparently them sell his autographs...and / or other NIL stuff and dude maybe got a couple bucks up front...and may see 0 after that.

These are just speculative numbers to grab headlines.

All the stories like this seem to play this game where they speculate a big number that nobody will ever pay out ...and they don't ever say if / how much anyone has been paid.

These are deals and contracts where way less...or no money will ever change hands...

Sorry my friendā€¦these NIL deals are real for the Alabama and tOSU 5-star recruits! As much as we think these deals are nutsā€¦itā€™s happening!

Hope to see one of our Gophers will someday get some 7-figure NIL deals šŸ™

This kid skipped his senior year in HS to enroll early at tOSU and never played a snap in college football just signed a $1.4M NIL deal! šŸ˜± Crazy!

How long will it be before there are lawsuits on reneging on the NIL deals?

The 4th string QB bit is a bit misleading. Don't think there are many that don't expect Ewers to be the OSU starter and probably sooner rather than later. Kid was as highly rated as they come out of high school.

Still though, if true that is a lot of money to toss at a guy who hasn't even taken a college snap yet. Probably a fairly safe bet that he pans out but you never truly know what a player is going to do until they step on the field and prove it.

A lot of 5 stars have bombed. Ewers probably won't but sure could. Flip back through the QB classes of 2016, 2017, 2018...guys there's enough time to know where their college careers have landed. Huge washout rate of 4 and 5 stars who never even started, and many others who transferred around or just had okay careers. The 5 star to NFL rate is only about 25%, and 5 star to Rd 1 is about 10%.

Even if a guy isn't that great is it worth signing up the OSU QB in your marketing stable? Guess we'll find out the value of say, an Adrian Martinez who's more famous than good.

Correct. Perfect 5*. https://247sports.com/player/quinn-ewers-45572600/

Quinn Ewers is rated as 1.0000 on 247. There have been 6 players who have been rated that highly and none of them have bombed. Clowney, Nkemdiche, Rashan Gary, Vince Young and Ernie Sims. The lowest drafted of the group is Nkemdiche at 29. Two players have been rated .9999, that being Trevor Lawrence and Ronald Powell -- who is the only player on this list who injuries ravaged.

Fair points, but I think the QB washout rate is higher because there's just fewer spots at both the college and pro level. Even among that high drafted group of perfectos, only 2 have made a Pro Bowl, and VY washed out soon after while Clowney is being passed around the league like a doobie during his prime years.

But if a hotshot rookie can get a shoe deal much larger than this before playing a NBA game, then maybe it's worth the gamble to build the relationship early and deal with a certain failure rate.

There has to be a mullet visor, tshirt, mug tie-in worth more a couple mill. Cā€™mon man.

This will not cause any dissension or jealousy in the OSU QB room, right?
It will be interesting to see what kind of impact stuff like this does have on locker rooms. I could certainly see it driving a wedge between guys when one is making out big time while another isn't.

I think the NIL stuff sucks. The top teams will get more of the top players which hurts competition. Competition is what makes college football great. OSU will continue to separate from the rest of the big10. OSUā€™s primary market is Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland which is huge in total.

OSU has been killing the rest of the conference in recruiting for years now. Not sure this is going to have any real impact on their ability to attract top end talent.

The NiIL stuff will keep OSU on top. Thatā€™s the problem. I can hear the pitch now. Hey kid, bring your 5 star talents to OSU and get a 1million$ NIL deal or go to Iowa City and be the spokesman for Teddyā€™s Big Burgers for 10k/yr.

So this is a change from the days when OSU was landing top recruits without NIL?

Quinn Ewers is one of the most hyped prospects in the history of college football. Living in Texas, I really believe that Tom Herman's last straw at UT was not landing Ewers. He has a massive following and when you include his social media footprint, this $ amount is not surprising. He skipped his senior year of HS because he knew that the money was there.

He is not your typical 4th stringer, the headline was intended to get this reaction.

A more accurate headline would have been "Highest Rated Recruit in History sign 1.4m NIL deal".

Big Time money at 18, more than a few of them will go completely off the rails.

Situation Iā€™m curious about is if one QB is killing it with NIL money (based on supposed future brand potential) while the more senior QB ahead of him on the depth chart, and playing, is getting little NIL love. More drama for the coaches to handle. Distribution of of NIL money by third parties in a manner counter to contribution to team success, and dedication to team over self, might actually make coaching at the top helmet schools more complicated than it already is.

I don't know if it will.

Quinn Ewers had a massive following prior to Ohio State. Lets say Stroud is really good (likely), there might even be more incentive ($) for Ewers to transfer out.

Quinn Ewers is landing these kinds of deals because of his social media presence which will only grow if he is playing. It's not because he is at Ohio State. Some of the first people to cash in on NIL deal were women's basketball players at Fresno State - - that money wasn't coming from the booming industries of Fresno throwing money at Bulldog women's basketball.

Any more often then we see in baseball?
Manziel, I guess, is a personality issue not just a money issue. But I think college football, because of its popularity and high stakes, has a lot more potential Manziel types than HS and college baseball. Moreover, baseball bonus payments to youngsters are typically outside of the college setting, and the players usually have professional agents who, among their positive traits, supply the financial and tax literacy and behavioral ā€œbrakesā€ that their young charges often need. Maybe that is where college football will go for the chosen few. Head coaches having to deal with agents for their top players? Or for half the team, if you are Ohio State?

The college athletes have agents now. The biggest difference is what you pointed out (IMO), the college athletes also have the spotlight more than some kid playing single A ball in Springfield, Missouri.

I think navigating NIL will be a difficult thing for college football coaches, no doubt. It'll be another layer to the onion that is recruiting and college sports. Obviously, I have no idea how this will all play out but my initial thought is that it will help a school like Minnesota. We play in the Big 10, if we're good, our games will be everywhere

The stars at Ohio State, Alabama, Oklahoma, etc. will make way more at those schools - no doubt. We were never getting those players regardless. Quinn Ewers was going to a blue blood. In fact, NIL probably puts MORE pressure on Ohio State. What do they do if Stroud is good? There is a really good chance they lose Ewers. There was probably less of a chance if Ewers didn't reclassify.

But what about the backup WRs? What about a rotational DT that could start at MN? The blue blood programs are landing 2/3 deep recruits every year better than our best (higher rated). I think with the help of an agent, a kid might examine those depth charts a bit and try to find a spot where there might be more immediate spotlight (more $). But I don't know.

I still think it is bad for college football. Minnesota will be disadvantaged unless some row boat company ponies up some money. 5 Buckeyes have an NIL car deal including Stroud

Well said, I agree this could help schools like ours land guys who might want to be more of a big fish in a smaller pond.

But how is that a change? We have never competed with OSU for recruits - what's different now in that regard?
