Top 5 most overrated bands/artists

Just completed a road trip and heard a lot of music. Thought about this and came up with a list of artists I feel are overrated. I only picked "legend" status artists. I actually like some of the five but still think don't deserve the amount of praise heaped upon them.

In no order:
Elton John = strong start to his career but nothing good since the 70's imo. Plus, one of the worst songs ever in Candle/Wind.

Pear Jam = I know some here are going to disagree big time, but I associate them with helping bands like Creed exist. Yuck.

Coldplay = One really good album, a couple decent one's and several bad one's. Mega arena band that does little for me.

Kiss = Really fun gimmick but still a gimmick band that has no business still plodding along.

The Eurythmics = Great voice with annoying songs imo. No idea how they are a HOF band.

Fire away...
 

Grateful Dead-just awful music on every level.
Red Hot Chili Peppers- some good songs, but they are difficult to watch perform.
Dave Matthews Band
Imagine Dragons
Ted Nugent- When I was young I liked Ted, but his songs do not stand the test of time.
 

Nickelback - that rockstar garbage they sang, and every other song.

No Doubt - Gwen has always been overrated to me.

Motley Crue - Form over substance. What have they sang that’s good and not just sounds like something rock N roll ish.

Coldplay - In homage to Tikied. yup, they’ll work.

The Kings of Leon - The first song I heard annoyed me and I’ve childishly never gave them another shot.

It's hard for me to come up with much to back up my list, other than I just don't like these artists so I just stay away and or change the channel/radio station whenever I hear them.

I see this thread and some posters' lists and I said to myself (and I knew it was me because I recognized the voice), there is a pretty large, vast distinction between the MUSIC and seeing the actual Performer.

For example, Rush. I was never a big Rush fan, not really at all, but I had heard they were fantastic in concert and I finally checked it out; they were. Bands/artists in the above lists like KISS, Motley Crue, even Nugent, like their music or not, they put on one helluva show for the most part.

My list? I'd have to think about that one. I never "got" Nirvana, but I guess I get that they at least helped launch a new genre of (albeit shitty for the most part) music. I'd have to put some thought into it to come up with a few more.

Somebody mentioned the Dead. Hey, if that's not your thing, fine. I freakin' love the Dead - but you really need to have seen them live or listen to live concerts to "get" the experience.

in my case, there is relatively little music made in the last 30 years that I really like. I am not a hip-hop guy at all - so Kanye, Dre, Snoop, etc - not my thing.

Aerosmith doesn't do a lot for me -but I never saw them live. Bon Jovi - outside of a couple of big radio hits, I'm pretty blah about.

also not much of a heavy metal guy - so Metallica isn't really my thing.

But, if you like those groups - hey, good for you.

However, I think we can all agree on one thing - if you lived through it, Disco Sucks!

Tesla, 3 doors down, Motley Crue, were shows that were much better than I expected.

I was given some tickets one time to Hinder, Staind and 3 Doors Down. Surprisingly, Hinder was the best of the bunch for me but Staind? Holy shit, those bastards literally just stood there, motionless, playing and singing, then mumbled 'Thank you' at the end of each song. The most lame-ass boring rock band I have ever seen in my life, not that I was a fan of Staind anyway. Ugghhhh

Shoot! I was gonna see if you wanted to go to one of the shows this summer. Last tour ya know! I'm hitting three cities. Best times I've ever had going to a show. Gonna be groovy.
 

I will never forget the 1986 concert at the MetroDome in Mpls - Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead. Being that it was in the MetroDome, they were doing the "no smoking in the MetroDome" announcements. and the Dead Heads were going "hey, man what did that dude say?" - and then lighting up another joint. they overwhelmed the air-handling capacity and by the end of the night, the air in there had a distinct bluish tint.

despite a fairly crappy sound system, it was still a fun show.

I later caught the Dead at the old St. Paul Civic Center with much better sound. that was a really fun show. Captain Trips rules!

That was my first Dead show. A lot of firsts that night. 😎
 


No particular order

Nirvana - like bands from that genre and era but don’t get the love for these guys

Coldplay - they think they’re U2 - they are not

Kiss - once listen to their first 3 albums cover to cover and back to back - majority of it was awful

Dave Matthews Band - yuck

Aerosmith - saw them live and Lenny Kravitz opened up for them. Kravitz blew them off the stage.
 

Aerosmith, Nirvana, and The Rolling Stones are at the top of my list.

This is it. Does the song tickle your brain synapses and give you that “high”? Artistry is a distant second but important for influence lists. Highly individual. Top 5 overrated for me:

1. Velvet Underground
2. Velvet Underground
3. Velvet Underground
4. Velvet Underground
5. Velvet Underground

Honorable mention Beyoncé, Eminem. Not my thing, don’t get it.

We can recognize originality, or derivative music, and appreciate both. TVU does nothing for me. A complete, utter waste of my time when I could be listening to something else. Virtually every group listed on this thread has some brain cocaine music to their credit. Even Eminem.

For me, the answer to this question has to piss off some people. No one thinks Nickelback is amazing.

2. DMB
3. U2
4. The Grateful Dead
5. Beyonce - I realize this answer might seem at odds with my original point but in many circles she is considered a legend. For me, even in that genre of music, I just don't get it.

not a Lou Reed fan, I take it.

I was just listening to the VU's greatest hits. admittedly, they can be an acquired taste - but if I'm driving at night, the VU can hit the right ambiance for me. "Waiting for my man" and of course "Heroin" are great tracks in my book. makes me imagine hanging out with Andy Warhol in the NYC underground scene in the 70's.

I’ll never fault anyone for their musical tastes. We’re all a little wierd. Speaking of atmospherics another band some might consider overrated -and I recall actively wanting to dislike by virtue of being a critics darling- I actually ended up listening to on a loop. Radiohead. Probably not for everyone but takes me back the 90s and 00s era and new adventures, new cities at that time. Music does that.

I put Styx on the list just as an initial gut reaction. In hindsight, I am not sure they are that highly rated. Based on that I am replacing them with a glaring omission...Phish.

Just don't get it.
